Lawn Mower for Small Garden / Nature Strip

Hello,

I am looking to buy a lawn mower. I have a corner property home in Melbourne and I want it mainly for the nature strips on front and side. And the area is from small to medium. My only requirement is the battery operated one.

Which one do you think will be a good one to do the job? I want a budget one and don’t want to spend too much.

Thank you.

    • Push mower is very hard work. I changed to Aldi ones that with 2 battery and a charger to be less than $200. However charger seem an issue. First time I bought was just DOA. Then the new one is now dead after only 5-6 times used for the last 2 yrs?

Push mower is just some mild exercise and would be perfect just to do a nature strip. I did a 250sqm lawn for years with a push mower. I've just gotten lazy as I've gotten older.

      • depends on grass type, kikuyu can get tough but finer leaf a breeze

An 18V ozito like this one.

You had some people here fooled…

    battery operated does not last.
Get electrical one from Bunnings Ozito 1200W or 1500W. Under $ 170.

    • Corded mowers are a nightmare unless you've just got large open lawn areas and convenient outlets. If you need to go around bushes and trees they're a real pain. Dad had one when I had to do the lawn and I hated the thing. Constantly have to back track and reposition the cord etc and that's if you don't accidentally run it over.

    • I had a 1500W one of these, and was quite happy with it. Managing the cord when mowing only required the ability to think ahead and mow in a pattern that didn't mean you were crossing over the cord or wrapping it around bushes and trees. Had it long enough to wear it out. Would have been happy to replace it with same, but they were out of stock. Ended up with a 1200W one, which was little more than a toy that isn't worth even its lower price.

  • Make a clover lawn

  • I have a Ryobi One+ 18V lawn mower with a 4Ah battery from Bunnings ($329 now). Only for mowing the nature strip. It is adequate; just good enough to do the job. Battery lasts long enough to do my nature strip and my neighbour’s (both small to medium). It also has enough charge to do some edging before I have to recharge (I have an edger too).

It has 5 depth levels. I can comfortably cut grass at level 3/5, but it tends to stall at level 2/5 (lower cut). If I had known this, I would have gone for the 36V version ($499 now, presuming it is more powerful), even with the price difference. But I still don’t regret buying this and for your situation it could be adequate as well if you’re unable to go for the 36V version.

Happy to answer any questions if you have any.

    • How big is the nature strip. Seems like it really lacks capacity. If it just can do 2 strips on rather short grass. And just a medium cut.

Probably about 8 x 2 m, neighbour’s similar. I’m able to go over each one a couple of times on setting 3/5. On a good day I can do mine on 2/5 but not all the time due to stalling. Therefore, capacity is quite good, but power is average.

Assuming you don’t have any battery tools? If you do, buy a mower that uses those batteries.

See if you can find a Ryobi or ozito 18v second hand. I see them for sale frequently. There’s not a lot to go wrong and you’ll save $.

  • What sort of lawn is it?
The Ozito cylinder is very good for what it is, ideally needs more weight but it'll cut better than any battery rotary at this price. Just be careful if you regularly get sticks/rocks on the grass as it won't like them much at all. If you're not in the eco system, get the 2 x 4ah battery pack and charger for $100. Enough juice to mow probably 400sqm in my experience.

  • Have you considered a goat?

    • OP would have to apply for a permit to own a goat and must have signatures from all of their neighbours saying they are happy for OP to own a goat.

OP is not Sam I Am.
