What Are The Best Computer Stores for Shopping Locally in Brisbane?

Will be travelling to Brisbane next week with my 10 year old son and for his birthday I was planning on taking him to a computer store, as he is really keen on tech. So I was hoping to head to one or two stores but just not too sure what the in-store experience is like at some of the online stores (e.g. Computer Alliance, Gamedude, JW, Mwave, Scorptec). Do any have really large, on display products, like keyboards etc to try different switches or are they mostly just boxed items behind glass? Any suggestions for alternative stores would be great. He enjoys walking around JB Hi-Fi, so just after something bigger and better.
Appreciate any thoughts.

Computer alliance would be your best bet imo

I’m personally not really a fan of them anymore but if that’s what you’re after they have the best ‘retail’ setup imo.

The new umart in Mansfield also pretty nice but not as much on display.

These two places are within a 5 min drive if each other so maybe just visit both haha

    • Agree with this Computer Alliance is quite large with a fair bit on display including monitors, full systems done up etc.

Umart has a few things on display at Milton but its pretty warehousey and more of a get in get out type thing with people waiting around for their orders.

      • Computer Alliance is quite large

Pre-covid they had a racing seat rig to demo too :(

  • I think MSY will give the best experience.

    • Msy is pretty much dead, they closed so many stores, they used to have the best prices and the worst support. They still have the worst support but their prices arent that good now either.

      • I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did. I went once more than 12 years ago to pick up a set of logitech speakers - I could only compare the experience to lining up to buy soup at the soup nazi kitchen from Seinfeld.

Line up single file, know exactly what you want and have your order summarised succinctly - no chit chat, pay cash , get goods and get out.

I remember when Gamedude was just a roller door with a desk behind it. Back then they were the cheapest in Qld if not Oz I think.

Even after they upgraded to a bigger shop there was really nothing to see except a few boxes in glass cabinets and cheap novelty items in sale bins.

Post covid I doubt many shops have keyboards and mice out for testing however Harvey Norman did have a couple on their big brand display systems a few weeks back in a store I was wandering through. Probably better than nothing.

Gamedude are jerks. I used to go to them when they were a tiny store in a shopping centre as well and they were cool then. Since moving to large presmises at Springwood they have turned into total jerks.

    The Disc Shop

  • Thanks heaps for the info and suggestions, sounds like Computer Alliance might be the best bet. Cheers all.
