It’s okay, you don’t have to apologise. :)

    • +37

I also apologise on any Harvey Norman deal i post

      • +2

I think this should become standard Ozbargain etiquette

      • Why? I dont get why everyone hates HN so much. There just a company making profit. I mean u guys no the shady stuff apple does. Or the tax avoidance google does. Hn are not saints but neither is everyone else.
A deal is a deal regardless of who

        • +6

I agree, hence the upvote. But Gerry is our own, locally-bred shady b*st**d.

        • +32

Gerry Harvey runs the business in a very shady manner…
Harvey Norman killed off the local whitegoods manufacturing industry by parallel importing whitegoods, everybody else followed… decades later he screams about how australians aren't buying from his stores, and should be taxed to hell fopr buying over the internet
When customers were being rejected by Interest Free cards because of bad credit he allowed people to apply for Flexirent, posing as businesses
He often spent big on advertising super-deals but had extraordinarily low stocks. It was a bait n switch mechanism to get people into stores
Of the billions in assets he owns. has 800m in the bank in cash, though won't donate to charity and lives frugally.
Loves talking to poor people and tours poor neighborhoods like the Pope He still thinks he is a battler.
Told us that 3D TV is the best thing ever

          • +2

@Heaps for Cheaps: Yes Sir. Got me on that Flexirent when I was 19 purchasing my first laptop.

          • +4

@Heaps for Cheaps: Let's not forget he was forced to pay back some of the jobkeeper. Still haven't paid back the full amount despite being profitable

          • +4

@Heaps for Cheaps: Having worked for a furniture manufacturer HN would require you to "rent " floor space AND provide a monthly "kickback" for the privilege to sell with them. You would also have to make your product exclusive.

They dont care about Aussie manafacturers in the slightest.

          • +2

@Heaps for Cheaps: He used to have a very dedicated local franchisee. I was actually sort of instrumental in getting them started in computers one can just pay and take away. Gerry would not stop at that. This very dedicated man got literally worked into the grave. Same with all my sweat and tears, NO loyalty!
Gerry would hire and fire up to 50 franchisee's a week just to bolster his lavish life.
Nowadays If I buy something there I usually find it is of substandard quality. Getting my warranty? Well franchisee's are told to use every trick in the book to avoid any warranty if they get away with it. Sorry Gerry you have lost me, and I hope the majority of local customers do the same.

        • +3

It's not a deal when HN created less deals overall as a result of his selfish ways
Also not a deal when he ripped off tax payers like us for not paying back the full jobkeeper.

        • +3

Here's another reason why we boycott HN. Recent interview:

“If you want to get something done, the best system is the Chinese one,” he told news.com.au.

“You just do it. You’ve got a government that’s in total control and they don’t give a f**k what the people say.”

        • +2

So I have never liked HN simply cause of the way they conduct business in their stores - like imagine going in and buying a 3k tv and then at the register they try to upsell you a mobile phone contract. Thats some adware level schamozzle right there.

Straw that broke the camels back was the way he handled the job keeper thing, he did what every other company did but when the light was on him he basically stuck the finger up and told us to (profanity) off.. This is the the same tax payers that have been supporting the growth of his business from day dot. Alternatively if he apologised and returned the money we may be looking at gerry like we look at dick smith, but he decided to double down on being a (profanity) so here we are.

I am with you though, a bargain is a bargain no matter what, I just wont ever go in store again.

        • they tricked my dad when i was getting my first laptop a few yrs ago, he ended up buying like 150$ of 200$ (3yrs worth) of their stupid product care n replacement n then when the shitty hp laptop that i got ended up being TN touchscreen ffs (not clear tn or ips on website, inperson i couldn't tell) when the glass broke on it they made us wait for the one yr manufacturer warranty to run out we cone back n they said the product care & "REPLACEMENT" doesn't cover jack then they sent pics of dmg to hp to be quoted 550$ for just a repair from cracked screen on 898$ laptop (profanity) em. Ended up buying a 1080p touchscreen of ebay for like 110$ and fixed it up plus it's 1080p over 768p n it's ips aswell very clean. That (profanity) money should've gone to that in the first place, the product care n replacement did (profanity) jack all (reading the manual it only ever covered, software n like one usb port? ) bbsss

          • @AndrewMTG: i would buy from HN though they seem to have bargains for Acer nitros w rtx 3060 here n there. Would buy em if i wasn't looking for a lightweight laptop for uni. Definitely never gonna deal w them unless the deal is supergood n i would never fall for their scummy and deceptive practices to upsell cheap cover that doesn't cover aod at all

      • hahaha this is it.

    • +1

      He must be Canadian.

    • yeah but its hard to not when posting HN deals.

  • +1

    Ok, I will forgive you

    • thanks

  • It looks good except 8GB and ACER - sorry! Had so many bad experiences in the past with this brand.

    • +1

Eh, harsh. Acer is a budget brand, you get what you pay for, a gaming laptop for $800 is still pretty decent and you can get 16gb kits of ram for cheap enough. Although I would think 16gb upgrade is overkill on an 11300H and 1650, its hardly going to be a multitasking powerhouse so that 8gb should be enough for whatever single task you are doing.

      • What's a good brand?

        • Acer, best value on this laptop ;)

        • +1

My go to for laptops is Asus, but realistically it depends on your budget. if you want a gaming laptop for under $1000 then Acer is a great option.

      • Mate, you can't get away with 8GB on a gaming machine anymore.

If you need to upgrade it, then the value proposition is blown out of the water instantly.

        • I upgraded my 3060 version with a $40 8gb Crucial ram stick (deal posted here somewhere). I wouldn't exactly say an extra $40 blows the value proposition out of the window. It is an added cost but not by much.

          Edit: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/715867

          • -3

@JLCC: Problem is that 1) a lot of people aren't comfortable doing that kind of upgrade themselves. That doesn't include me at all, but it's worth baring in mind. 2) it's a bit risky buying a second random ram stick. You hear all the time about people who try that and end up with incompatible sticks, or more likely they revert back to base timings, which represents a significant speed downgrade. So chances are you're better off with a 16gb kit, and that's when the value starts being a bit sketchy.

            • -1

@Grazz989: If you get the right spec ram it will work fine. Ram upgrades aren't all hat touchy tbqh

        • You absolutely can when its an 11th gen i5 and a 1650 lmfao. 16gb kits can be had for $50, how is $850 for a gaming computer blown out of the water? Nothing you are saying makes sense lol.

Acer uses Micron/Cruical sticks, the most widely used and compatible ram on the consumer market, it takes literally 2 minutes of googling to find a guide on how to swap them out and what memory is compatible.

If others don't want to do this that is totally fine, however this is still a bargain even with the upgrade that is entirely unnecessary anyway because the rest of the hardware doesn't need more than 8gb, like I said, its not for multitasking.

          • -1

@doobey1231: "You absolutely can when its an 11th gen i5 and a 1650 lmfao."

            Pardon? Absolutely can … what?

"Acer uses Micron/Cruical sticks, the most widely used and compatible ram on the consumer market, it takes literally 2 minutes of googling to find a guide on how to swap them out and what memory is compatible."

? You think that just that broad basis of 'Acer uses Micron or Crucial sticks' is somehow going to be any guarantee that you can find out what memory will not just be compatible in the sense that it works, but in the sense that it doesn't drop to a slower profile if you mix DIMMs? Come on, man. Obviously it's piss easy to just throw in whatever 16GB kit, but that's a bit more expensive which was my whole point.

8GB is insufficient for modern gaming.

            • -1

@Grazz989: You said can't get away with 8gb, you can, 8gb is plenty for a 1650 and i5.

You are arguing stupid shit that is helping no one, the basis of your argument is that an unnecessary ram upgrade is too difficult or too expensive and ruins the bargain. Your points have been refuted, $50 extra still makes this a bargain.

Again literally 2 minutes on google gives you every single bit of information you need to undergo the task..

Im not wasting any more time arguing with you about what you believe is enough ram, but you are wrong and theres plenty of documentation to prove that.

        • Interesting comment.

So name a current laptop with the same specs and 16gb that's a better "value proposition".

    • +2

These laptops are pretty robust. Have the 3060 version with the weaker CPU and it had worked flawlessly for the past year. You aren't going to find anything like these specs for 800.

    • I got this laptop last Christmas in the bing lee deal and it hasn't missed a beat. Min 8gb extra ram is a must if you plan on doing anything while having 5 tabs open, thats regardless of what laptop it is.
It will also run the new cod game you get via redemption @1080p low settings surprisingly well.

      • I have a 10 year old i7 and have like 40 tabs open in chrome with no issue and only has 8gb ram :/ I also run heaps of other stuff.

    • I think it can be upgraded and upgrading the storage is super easy. I have the 10th Gen i5 with 16gb RAM and 1650ti and it’s a pretty good machine.

  • Get ready for people to say it's not a good deal because it doesn't come with an RTX3060

    • yeah the amount of times i edited the deal before posting was insane. but no 3060 under 1k.

    • +2

Not a good Deal. It needs a rtx 3060.

Gerry Harvey has been providing kids and students with the best value computers for three decades. Many of my friends owe a debt of gratitude for their affordable education.

    • +2

      own debt?

im ok with HN existing and from time to time there are good deals but in the last decade amazon has been providing the best tech deals which only makes jerry sour.

    • +4

Is this meant to be a sarcasm?

    • Hahaha

  • +1

How well will rpcs3 or yuzu run on this laptop?

    1080p @ 60fps

    • For RPCS3 (which is heavily CPU bound), you're gonna have a bad time. While you might find the odd game that runs perfectly fine, don't count on it.

The i5-11300H is a year and a half old at this point, is only 4-core, and is a laptop CPU (which imposes a performance penalty over a desktop CPU). According to RPCS3's Quickstart Guide, 4-core is the bare minimum "For being able to run any games at all, no performance or stability guarantees".

As for Yuzu, I'm not sure. Someone else can probably chime in here.

  • +4

Sweet, been looking for a cheap gaming laptop to replace my slowly dying 10 year old MacBook pro. Age of empires here we come

  • +5

Cheaper than a PS5 and this can do spreadsheets.

    • Lol

  • MW2 (2022) is on Steam this year, but the code will be for Battle.net

    • Yeah I dare say so, big push for battlenet. I'd say that's a good $70 there for the game.

  • +1

Anyone using this for games emulation? interested to see if it can run Teknoparrot/Cemu/Dolphin well. Assuming it can't handle PS3 or above. Have little interest in modern games beyond a bit of games streaming.

  • +1

Seller aside, got the last one at Harvey Norman Malaga (WA) and will be upgrading RAM to 16GB with an additional stick of Crucial 3200Mhz DDR4 SO-DIMM RAM.

Perfect machine for the sibling that plays low-graphic intensive games.

  • How many nits?

    • Lots of reviews but hardly any tests like these.

3 reviews I glossed over but nits vary from 230 up to 413.

I was going to crack a nit joke but yeah.

  • hi, yeah how many nits please and most importantly, will the bio s
or asus software let you boost the ram speed or is it stuck on say the usual 2400??

    • That's technical question maybe asked in a dedicated forum other than Oz B, but then again there has been a high influx in ask Oz B community.

On the same topic, can you please draw this request in MS Paint as I'm not sure how ones goes through clocking ram.

    • The Intel processor natively support DDR4 3200Mhz, however the BIOS might cap it at 2400Mhz if it doesn't allow you to enable XMP.

  • i mean acer software

  • +2

    This deal is good value

  • Pardon my ignorance, but it seems this laptop will more than meet the requirements to play Hearts of Iron IV?

    https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Hearts_of_Iron_IV

Pretty sure it does (by a fair margin) but happy for someone to talk me out of it.

    Thanks in advance :)
