Ultra Wide 34" Monitors

Hi all.

In search of a new monitor.

34inch UW.

Pc specs
3080
5900x

AW3423DW
AW3423DWF (just released)
SAMSUNG G8

from what I can gather. All run same panel.
Dwf has no g-sync and runs at 165hz I stead of 175hz.

My games usually play at under the 165/175hz. So from my understanding is g-sync is a prrffered option?

Whats everyone's thoughts?

Maybe something else?

Unlimited budget? Probably the AW3423DW - stick with g-sync if using nvidia. Worth noting the video ports and if it works for you.

The AW3423DWF has one HDMI 2.0 port and two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, whereas the AW3423DW has two HDMI 2.0 ports and only one DisplayPort video input

    • Yeah budget wont be an issue. And i just run 2 monitors. Main with the best connectivity and secondary with whatever is left over. So either dp1.4 or hdmi 2.0

I see the samsung runs the hdmi 2.1.

If they were all the same price. Youd still go the dw over the g8 and dwf?

Firstly, I'm far from an expert.

The HDMI 2.1 is useful spec as it allows enough bandwidth for 4k 120hz gaming. The G8 is 4k so needs the hdmi2.1. The alienware are both 3440x1440 so hdmi 2.0 are sufficient for 100hz refresh rates.

The 3080 might not do the super high refresh rates at 4K on the g8 which claims to go up to 240hz. So I'd say alienware.

Depends what games you play too. I prefer the 34 ultrawide format for productivity.

  • 34? why not 55…. coming to AU in weeks.
Samsung Electronics Australia has today announced that the Odyssey Ark – the world’s first 55-inch 1000R curved gaming screen – will be available for purchase in Australia from 24 October 2022

love to see what size desk you'd want… if you ran 2 side by side LOL

    • No chance anything bigger than 34.

  • If you manage to get a AW3423DW issue free then it's a fantastic monitor.
I'm on my third which seems to be a good one months of crap dealing with there support and returning monitors.

    • Mind sharing what was the reason for changing it 3 times so far?

First monitor had a fan issue where it would make a loud grinding kinda noise, every half an hour or so, Support claimed it to be normal and would only accept return/refund
Second monitor i had to wait spend $200 extra cause first deal wasn't available anymore and still haven't been beat to this day. This monitor had a mark on the screen that was quite visible, luckily they accepted a replacement.

And my current is that replacement which ive had no problems with it.

Original monitor i received March 31st
I didn't get my third fully working issue free monitor till July 7th

    • Oh dang. I think ive read somewhere, not sure where that they are looking in packing QC to prevent this. But yeah not sure how true or how soon this would happen.

My 32" g7 samsung has been flawless.

Maybe ill wait and see what the samsung tests like from hardware unboxed.

  • I've got the G7 and it's been hell. It seems previlent amongst a lot of these high end monitors so I think you might just need to be ready for any problems no matter the solution. When any of them work, they are all awesome solutions, I'd probably go the AW3423DW if you can get the stock

    Hey mate,

The Alienware AW3423DW is currently 20% off from the Dell store on ebay - bringing it down to $1724.25

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325102083261
    USE CODE: DEL20L

    Not sure when this expires

    • Thanks for that.

I think its been lower. I might hang to find more details about the samsung.

And then black friday is in nov.

You looked intot he g8 at all over the AW?

  • +1

Yeah I'm not sure when the G8 will release though and how much it will be?! And it's the same panel but without gsync from what I can gather, which I'm definitely keen to have - I've got a 3080 so I'd rather have solid VRR as most games won't be hitting 175 consistently unless you tank the quality.

I'm torn whether to jump on this deal or wait for black friday (it has been lower but nothing below $1500), or potentially even for the AW3423DWF model to release in oz and see what that price point is.

It's also VERY early to be jumping onto OLED monitor bandwagon so I don't know whether I should just wait a year or two… I'm usually impatient with this stuff though so I might end up getting the AW for now which will keep me happy until OLED monitors become more of a common thing

    • Bro, im the same.

I want it now but also dont want average.

      I uave the 240hz g7 32" currently.

      Run a 3080 with 5900x.

Already only run warzone at around 120-130fps with nvidia filters.

I think ill atleast wait for black friday. And pull the trigger then.

Unless samsung releas more deets and say its got gysnc and at say 2200-2400rrp

      • Yeah fair enough. I pulled the trigger (didn’t take long haha). Delivery expected Nov. 7th tho. Figured it’s not a model they’re retiring and it’s prob the one I’d go for over the Samsung or the AW-F variant anyway. I’ve got a 27” 144hz IPS at the moment so keen for an upgrade.

Yeah I run an i5-12600K with a 3080 but happy to take a hit on texture quality and lower settings for frame rate so I’ll see how this thing goes at 175 and find my happy medium with gsync.

From what I’ve read Dell customer support is ace too, providing a replacement before picking up the faulty one so that’s good to have.

Oh, and this dell eBay sale ends today (hence why I ordered it now hah!)

        • Nice bro!

May i ask what frames you run?

I run lretty much everything at high. No dlss or raytracing

          • @Agechamp: Destiny is my main jam and unlocked that hits over 200, goes down to 150-160 in the newer areas, and when things get really busy probably down to 130 maybe. That’s with medium settings (some high) and it still looks pretty af. I cap my frame rate at 144 tho so it’s solid.

Cyberpunk at medium to low with RT off I’m getting above 110 which makes it smooth enough for me. That’s with DLSS running the show. I could probably crank some settings up and push DLSS harder to get the same rate but I’m more tempted to drop things down further and get those frames up. My care factor isn’t high enough with that game tho.

But yeah my preference is to have it running at native resolution and as many frames as I can. I grew up with Quake and voodoo cards so I’m fine with blurry textures haha. DLSS is nice for frame rate but makes the resolution look crap so that’s a tricky one…

Looking forward to MW2 and seeing what that can do. I only got back into PC gaming a few months ago so still experimenting.

  • Anyone think that the nee AW model that drops gsync and 10hz is just as good as the previous 23dw?
