To do - nature strip and backyard (300 sqm).

Prefer to do once a month rather than do every week !

Am Melbourne based, the site advertises free shipping for now.

Have you considered a battery mower?
I use the Ryobi 36v Mower, it's glorious, quiet, covers a reasonable size lawn and best of all - no petrol to worry about.

    • I have a18V Ryobi one - https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/18v-one-33cm-lawn-…

Just that I see my neighbours finish off their lawns in 20 mins while I take 1 hr and this one struggles when grass gets dense.
SO I have to mow everyweek !

I will check out what you suggested. Thanks.

      • 300 sqm is quite a small area, you could get away with the 18v 40cm model. Your 33cm mower is too small.

If you go the 36v you will have plenty of power, but the price is higher. The minimum size for the 36v mowers is 46cm cutting width = quick and easy to mow 300 sqm.

300sq m of lawn is actually pretty big these days Our 800sqm block has 300m2 of grass. It takes a full 5ah 36v battery most of the time and often requires a little of the whipper snippet battery too.

          • @Euphemistic: Yeh I wasn't talking about how many batteries (I would guess 2 x 4ah batteries would cover that area), but the time it takes because of cutting width and power of mower to chew through the grass. I've not actually used an 18v Ryobi, mine is 36v older model. But you'd expect the very latest 18v to be capable and improved over earlier models? Or maybe that's being too optimistic and they should just pay more for the 36v.

  • Ohhh yeah, the 18volt ones are a bit weak. I found the 36v one is almost as good as a cheap petrol one in terms of power, but it's a bit of a struggle if the grass is wet or I leave it way too long and it gets upto like 15+cm tall.

    • I struggle if the grass gets thick , weeds establish and definitely when ground is wet

It only works in winter when I mow weekly

Leaning toward petrol as I see all my neighbours mow theirs within 15 minutes using their petrol

My neighbour lends me his Masport president 3000 and that’s when I realised how much better mowing experience can be !!!

As a new migrant I thought $300 was lots for a mower , now I see it’s really not

  • If you are only planning on monthly mowing you are going to have a hard time over summer. Fortnightly is bad enough. This summer is going to be wet again, so I suspect it’ll need to be done weekly to keep it neat. Letting it get too long is not good for keeeping a lawn in good condition. Monthly over winter can be OK, but will let weeds take over.

  • Petrol all the way.

    Bunnings.

    Victa.

    • Can you pls recommend one

      • There was a Victa Classic Cut 18" Mulch or Catch Lawn Mower for around $400 but it’s discontinued now; but I have seen it at some bunnings store still. I use this to mow a relatives lawn every week and it’s great. Easy start; mows well.

  • Once a month - that would be nice. WE can fly a rocket to Mars but can't make a slow growing grass. Or can they? I hate grass.

      Palmetto Buffalo

  • We have a edisons one, the cutting blade needs replacement, they cant help with spares. They suggested buying another. I hate the landfill waste for an otherwise functioning mower.

    Never again.

Can't beat Honda. Go self propelled for that area too. Will make the task a lot easier, especially in growing season. I have the HRN216VKU and would highly recommend.

      Ok

Looks like I can get it at bunnings for 764 with their 10% price beat based on https://www.morleymowercentre.com.au/product-page/honda-hrn2…

Probably the best residential mower you can buy with your money. It's based off an American design so its awfully good at mulching. It will make mowing once a month a breeze and should last you many years, just keep up with the maintenance.
