PSA: Samsung Mobile Batteries Bulging

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfM0GqsIB6c

Systemic battery bulging across multiple generations and models of Samsung phones

Batteries are not self-igniting like the Note 7 so for the moment, the issue appears to be a slow motion car crash rather than an immediate global recall event

Does not mention whether it is battery quality, fast charging or something else as the root cause

  • Jerryrigeverything mentioned in the above video it’s likely bad battery quality (bad quality control).

Hmmm, maybe @tallguyinoz 's post is related to this issue and it isn't the cable: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/726746

I worked in telco when the Samsung a50 came out, and good god I saw so many swollen batteries in that phone

Weird, I know of maybe 10-20 old Samsung phones in use within my extended family/friends and none of them have this.

Including phones that have been stored / charged up later for use as backups.

    • I have a Note3 that I occasionally get out and flash random roms for fun and only recently the battery started to bulge. Not bad for a 9 year old phone.

    • I think the video says battery bulging issue started to occur in phones after infamous Note 7. The older ones may be differently built.

        Sample set:

        S21 Ultra used frequently
        S21 used frequently
        S20 used frequently
        S10 used frequently
S10 stored for 2 years and then used frequently
        S7E used frequently
A20 stored for 3 years unused
        S8, S9, S20, S21 stored for 3-4 years unused

plus a bunch older than that (S3/S4 etc)

I had that happen to an old iphone 3gs. I think cos it was left in a drawer and it gets pretty hot during summer in my room.

  • exynos or snapdragon ?

    Very interesting.

Ive had the s6 edge plus, and so many others. I've used and kept them as back up phones (ie, unused in drawer) and Ive never had the swollen battery issue.

Still have my og fold, s10+ and that's fine too.

    spicy pillows

  • Have two old Note 8s, both looks ok for now. Hopefully this is isolated in just certain manufacturing regions.
