Somewhat Midrange Work PC Build Suggestion - Budget $1000

Hello OB fam,

Building a little WFH PC for my partner who does a bit of Photoshop, Illustrator.

I just want to know if it's worth going with Ryzen 5000 series CPU or find a cheaper 3600?

Also need suggestions on which GPU would be decent? Ideally budget at $1000 and would like a mATX small cutesy build.

Thanks in advance!

    "small cutesy build."

    Would you consider mini ITX?

EDIT - do you also need monitor KB mouse and OS in your budget?

  • "does a bit of Photoshop, Illustrator." could mean that you need 32 or 64GB of RAM depending on how big the "bit" is and how complex the "bit"'s are. Multi layer files need more RAM and more grunt.

I would get a normal size motherboard and case as there are more options and it's cheaper to upgrade later.

As for CPU and GPU, check out what she is using now and see how much the CPu and GPU are being used and then you can see if you can get away with the cheaper 3600.

Make sure you get a fast SSD for the OS and a HDD for the graphics data storage so as to minimize the cost. Check out the storage requirements for the graphcis as it can be HUGE (a few GB).

As for DRAM check the motherboard to see what speed DDR4 is can handle and get the fastest speed before the price doubles for the same amount. DDR 3200 or DDR 3600 are probably the sweet spot for DDR4 at the moment.

    • Perfect Andy, thank you so much. Currently using a 2016 imac 27 inch so anything will be an upgrade really but it's a matter of future proofing. Also considered a m1 Mac mini but they come with very little storage and RAM. Cost to upgrade is bonkers.

      • I have a 5700G as I needed the 8/16 core for multi thread building code. The CPU/GPU sweet spot would probably be the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G as you do not need a separate GPU with it and as such you can save's a bunch of money.

  • The new Ryzen chips have APUs built in so need for a dedicated GPU. Worth considering if your partner doesn't game. Or go with intel's lineup.

Watch it as the 7000 series from my quick reading is not very powerful compared to the 5600G or 5700G for the iGPU. The 7000 series also require DDR5, which is not cheap.

IMHO better to go with 3600 & GPU or 5600G than one of the 7000 series.

  • 5600 and 3600 doesn't seem to be costing too differently if buying new.

Considering the main workload seems to be Photoshop and illustrator and aiming for a low cost/mainstream build, I'd actually recommend the Intel 12th gen.

    An 12th gen i5 + B660 board + DDR4 ram, provided this won't become a gaming build. Alternatively, 12th gen i3 + B660 + DDR5 if want to become a gaming build in the future.
