Uluru Accomondation, Tour, Car Rental Prices

I am going to flying to Uluru (Ayers Rock Airport) single in February 2023 initially planned for 3 days 2 nights trip courtesy of their $36 return promotion, but Jetstar has now modify their schedule [involuntary schedule change] so it gives me flexibility to change the flights.

The accomondation situation in Uluru/Yulara is a monopoly by Ayers Rock Resort with prices going at $300/night on average for a budget quality.

The tours simply do not operate in the afternoon until sunset or before sunrise with companies charging $90 return for a 30 minute bus ride to Kata Tujia.

Just wondering what is the average car rental price in Uluru? $50-100/day for a Corolla/small or cheapest car?

Should I minise the damage and only do 2 days 1 night and rent a car to do Uluru base walk the afternoon/sunset of day 1 and then Valley of the Winds sunrise of day 2?

  • It was more competitive pre-COVID, and just as COVID started would have been the best time to go as things started opening up (they still had rentals, but lost all international tourism) - but right now, it's the absolute pits.

I'd wait two or three years, it's all still going to be there but at least there will be backpackers and travelers to work the seasonal jobs there.

Right now you're paying for FIFO workers to accommodate you (minus the guides and some of the hotel staff who've lived there their whole lives).

  • +1

If it's just you, maybe check out local tours. I did one few years back. I think it's called adventure tours. Slept in a canvas tent with a simple bed and a fan if you are okay with it. All food and transport included.

    • Nope! Sleeping with a fan in the red centre in the middle of February at 40C is NOT a holiday option.

      • Just don't go then. You'll be surprised to find out you'll need a doona the moment the sun goes down.

      • It's not 40° when you sleep.

    • Yes I'd do this. I went with Wayoutback, but the big tour bus tours look OK as well. You get transport, park fees, food, accommodation all included and they do the major attractions like Kings Canyon. All levels from backpacker to reasonably comfortable.

Had a quick look at the website for Hertz Uluru Airport and they're quoting $500-$600 for single day hire of a Corolla or similar, north of $900 if you want a second day.

Unfortunately it is what it is out there - you're in the middle of nowhere so most of these places rely on diesel generators to provide power and other services - similar story with Kings Canyon. The accommodation at Curtin Springs is a bit cheaper but it's also 100km away - you can get a decent cabin for the night there for around $200 but those 2 are really your only options.

  • we went three days last month (for camels and segway - they pickup). And the hop on hop off bus for an independent visit to the rock. Kings Canyon was too far for a daytrip (4am start). Consider deferring trip to avoid heat & flies. We were impressed with resort management and staff.
