Callaway XR Speed Driver $219 in-Store (RRP $349) after $100 Guaranteed Minimum Eligible Trade-in @ Golf World

190

A rare golf deal. This one is probably more for the weekend hacker or beginner. The XR Speed driver was released in 2018, so it isn't going to replace your Rogue or Stealth. This is a good price for someone wanting to replace a 10 year old driver or looking for their first "real" driver. It does have a carbon head, so it's fairly current tech. I'd suggest it'd be a decent option for any mid-high handicapper.

In order to get this deal you need to trade in your old driver that qualifies for the $100 guaranteed minimum trade in. If you don't have one, maybe check out your local dump recycling shop, thrift shop, garage sales, or your grandads garage.

Golf World tells me the trade in club must meet the following:

  • No Junior Clubs, no counterfeits and must be metal.
  • Clubs with the following defects or deficiencies do not meet our minimum criteria and will not be accepted for the $100 minimum trade.
    • Metal Woods with marks, dents, significant scratches, sky &/or pop marks on the crown &/or clubs that rattle.
    • Any club with a shaft that is cracked, bent, paint scratches or is showing excessive bag wear.
  • This promotion does apply to sale items

You need to go in store to organise the trade in. The club is available in two configurations:
[Hand: Mens Right] [Loft: 9 Degrees] [Flex: Stiff]
[Hand: Mens Right] [Loft:10.5 Degrees] [Flex: Regular]

Both models come with a nice HZRDUS Project X shaft.

I'm planning to go in later in the week and pick up the stiff option to replace my old R7 Quad. But if anyone gets on this, let me know how the trade in goes and how picky they are about the condition of the trade in club.

Stores in QLD, NSW, VIC & SA.

Surely as this is a sale item this would not apply then?

      read it again

      • Ah good point

I have this driver, and would not recommend it. My buddies call me 'Colorbond' thanks to the horrible tinny sound it makes at impact.

    • +3

I don't see why the sound is important? Lots of drivers have strange sounds these days. Plus, if I worried about what my buddies were going to pay me out about, I'd never leave the house.

      • +2

Just comes down to personal preference. The unpleasant sound affects how much I like hitting my driver. I have less confidence hitting clubs that I don't like. More confidence hitting shots = better golf. Just my opinion!

Sound aside, I think there are better drivers out there (albeit not at this price point). I bought mine for $280 about 2 years ago because it was cheap, and now regret it. Moral of the story, don't buy things because they're cheap. Buy ones you like (as cheap as possible)!

p.s. I play off a 15 handicap, so take this with a grain of salt :)

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm off 15 too. What don't you like about it (apart from the sound)? If you had your time again, what would you have bought?

I think there are better drivers out there (albeit not at this price point).

There most definitely are, but for someone who plays once a fortnight or so, it's hard to justify spending more. I'd ideally like a TM M1 or M2 driver, but getting even a well used one for this kind of money is almost impossible.

From what I've read, the XR Speed seems to be a fairly solid choice if you don't have a superfast swing. Fairly forgiving, fairly long etc.

@wombat81: I'm being too negative. For $219 you won't be able to find a brand new driver anywhere near as good as this one. Will be a massive improvement on your current R7 Quad!

The only thing I can really fault the head for is the sound, and it really isn't even all that bad. I've got a bigger gripe with the shaft really. I've got the same 9* model with the stiff shaft that you are looking at. The shaft wasn't stiff enough for my swing, so my driving accuracy wasn't that great.

I ended up recently buying a heavier, stiffer shaft that's more appropriate for my swing so I'm more accurate off the tee and have more confidence in my driver. Turns out that there aren't any industry standards when it comes to shaft stiffness. When looking at how stiff a shaft is, you can almost disregard the regular/stiff/xstiff designation as this is mostly marketing. Flex, torque and weight specs will give you a much better idea of how "stiff" one shaft is in comparison to another.

If I could go back I would spend a bit more on an M3/M4 with some more shaft options that would suit my swing better.

            • +1

@eyezakk: Thanks for that. Yeah, getting the shaft right is a thing. That's kind of why I'd like to stick with taylormade as I'd hope their shaft ratings are somewhat consistent.

But anyway, I figure I can't go too wrong at this price, and if I hate it I should be able to resell fairly easily.

LOL.. I get called Mr Callaway because I got the Costco Edge set. They sound about as cheap.

      • +8

I get called 'knob-stick' by my mates, because I play golf …

      • Captain Kirkland reporting in.

Seriously though… How does this driver compare against the 1W in Costco edge set?

    • +2

Probably not as bad as my Nike square driver. The looks I get hitting that thing on the driving range lol but Idgaf.

  • Come on now you're not going to find a driver/fairway metal at the dump that a) they'll value at $100 trade or b) doesn't have one or more of the listed defects

    • Perhaps not, but you might get lucky.

      • +1

Worth the effort? Probably not, but upvote for rare golf deal.

        • +3

Just to be clear, they don't need to value your trade in club at $100, $100 is the guaranteed minimum trade in value for any club that meets their criteria. I'm planning to use a Powerbilt driver from the mid 2000s that's been sitting in my garage forever and only actually used a handful of times, so it's in pretty good condition.

          • @wombat81: Oh right, I misread that then. It's certainly more achievable.

Came across this video which compares this driver to the Taylormade M4 which would be the club that many people might be inclined to go for instead. But you'd be looking at around double the price for a new M4 at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZioSzbKdZHA

And this guy is a 7 handicapper (I think) and gives his opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAsfqWcpOOI

  • where did you find the the trade in club information? there is no mention in the store or on the website.

  • thanks mate

went to VIC store today with a nearly new Dunlop lady driver. (only swing less than 10 times)
the store refuse to trade in as $100. (told me they can only resell it as $50). never deal with golf world anymore.

    • Wow that's rough. Why offer something if you aren't going to honour it? They're saying that their own criteria aren't valid. Makes no sense. I'd contact them via facebook and let them know about your poor experience. Not to try and get a better outcome, but just for the feedback. That's terrible business.

  • thanks mate. i have been shopping with golfbox golfclearance house of golf, sydney golf, this golf world is the worst.
