  • Does it come with FULL toners ?

    • Approximate Starter Page Yield: 500 Pages

Hmmmm… looks like it will cost almost $400 to replace the toners at OW after the first 500 pages…

      • and remember - with averaging 1200 or so pages per lot of toner, you have to remember you're replacing FOUR toners after every 1200 pages, so even if you're getting compatible toners for $50 each, that means it's costing you 4 x $50 = $200 per 1200 pages = 16.666 c per page - and that's for COMPATIBLE laser toners

        /end maths lesson

PS - my HP laserjet colour laser 1600 is currently sitting at $1.29 on ebay as we speak (for real) !!

nvm, beat by jv for his own QA

  • 16mb memory is a deliberate limitation. 16mb is usually a limit for b/w printers, i don't know how it would work for 600dpi colour images?

    • Not sure if I'm doing this right but it should be enough JUST

      A4 = 11.7 x 8.3 inches
      11.7 x 600 = 7,020 pixels
      8.3 x 600 = 4,980 pixels
      Total = 34,959,600 pixels
      1 bit per pixel = 4.16MB
      4.16MB x 4 colours = 16.64MB
      minus non printable areas
      plus a bit of overhead
      minus a bit of compression = ~16MB

      • The printer doesn't have to store the whole image in its own memory at once; the PC can store the image and just feed the printer strips of image to be printed & discarded one after another.

Printer RAM's more for when you're feeding the printer a whole PostScript/PDF file, and expecting the printer to turn it into a bitmap itself.

        • Laser printers need to store the whole page because they print so fast

        • Can I suggest you Google "Host based printer" or "GDI printer", for examples of printers (including laser printers) that don't need to store the whole page before they start printing?

  • Good for 500 pages, then chuck it out and buy another one or be up for $400 worth of toner

Would the "colours" realistically run out after 500 pages or just the black?

  • +1

I would get this if it had Wifi.

I don't expect printers to come with full toners, since this is a razor vs razorblades industry, but what percentage of a full toner is included in the starter toners?

    • I don't expect printers to come with full toners

my HP colour laser did… (LaserJet 2600n)

      • That's going back a while.

        • yeah… i should have stocked up on them… got it for about $200 with 4 full cartridges…

        • Me too. Built like a tank and sounded like one when it was printing. Still one of my favourites.

      • How much did the printer cost at the time, and how long ago was it?

My first laser cost $4000. My second cost about $600-700. They both came with full toners.

Now they are sub $100. When toners still sell for over $100, you really can't expect a full toner with a printer for under $100. No one would buy toners. They'll just get another printer for less than the price of a toner.

    Can we assume it's mono?

      Hi everyone,

Here’s a colour laser printer you might be interested in

      Colour/Black & White

      • I was going to say the same, but assumed that geewhiz couldn't have been so stupid as to miss 2 references to this printer being colour and therefore "Mono" must mean something else.

        • +3

Yes you only get ONE printer

        • +5

stereo printers are not very common…

        • +3

Or the even rarer 5.1 surround printer…

        • +3

We have one of those at work but the sub blew, now it sucks and only prints 5.0

  • Is this a good price for a colour laser printer? Looking to get what in August.
