Kogan Portable UV Sanitiser Robot and Power Bank $9.99 + Delivery (Free with Kogan First) @ Kogan

60

With a supposed RRP of $199.99 (however looking around, most are being sold for $80-100), definitely an interesting looking device to say the least. Has in-built power bank with 4800mAh capacity.

Looks to be a clone of this.

Also available through Dick Smith.

Likely excess stock from peak Covid times as most information regarding this sort of device is around 2 years old, however I still think it may be a good buy at 10 bucks to have sanitise a hotel bed or something.

How is this a thing, the science just doesnt add up.

    • I am unsure in what sense you mean the science doesn't add up. Certain types of UV light are effective against germs/bacteria, but I do agree that the output of this device is unknown and may just be a gimmick. At 10 dollars, I'm happy to gamble and see what it does.

At the very least, it would make an awesome cat toy!

        • Exactly what I was thinking in one of my other comments below, take out the lights and boom, keep the cat occupied for hours!

@zmigo: LOL! I saw your reply about 20 milliseconds after I hit POST COMMENT 🤣

Open the curtains…buy an actual Powerbank.

    • Fair enough. I guess in my example use case if I were to check into a hotel perhaps at a time the sun isn't out, this could be a useful tool to sanitise the bed/sofa or whatever (provided that this device actually does output a meaningful amount UV light), the power bank component is just an added bonus.

  • Interesting … Did you buy one OP?

I have purchased one, took a punt at 10 bucks (had free shipping with kogan first).

sorry but you just wasting $10
        and postie time…

Thank you for your apology, but I won't be sad over 10 dollars. Worst case scenario can take it apart and play around with it.

Pretty sure this is just a gimmick. My Robot vac has a built in UV light for "sanitisation", Not sure if it does anything tangible.

Understood, can take out the lights and turn it into a toy that the cat can follow around XD

I tested the UVC light - it's not UVC
When I questioned Kogan for their testing specs they just refunded.

    • Thanks for that. I will most likely do the same if that's the case. Did you test using a dosimeter card?

      • +2

No - a UVC specific light meter. It picked quite a few other UVC devices.

        • Nice, nifty piece of gear!

If this thing was real (UVC/Ozone Producing) you wouldn't really want to be in the same room as it let alone attaching it to your hand.

Reminds me of this BigClive Video and the associated news story.

The thing about UV sterilisation of bacteria and viruses is that even if you have the right type of UV delivered at an appropriate strength, it still only works if the organisms are exposed to it directly. Therefore, for example, if there was a small crease in a sheet on a bed that was being exposed to UV 'sterlisation' from above, any bacteria/viruses within the fold of that crease will remain 100% viable/unaffected. You can imagine similar scenarios re clothes, carpets, even keyboards and mobile phones. Many people have a false perception of UV sterilisation being something akin to sterilisation via radiation (i.e. no actual 'line of sight' required). That is definitely not a correct perception. UV light needs to actually hit something directly, and for a sufficient amount of time, to kill it.

In my humble opinion this device may ultimately only function to give people a false sense of security. If you buy it, do so based on the assumption that it is just an 'interesting little toy' that comes with a built-in powerbank.

  • can this be a toy to child? can this move on the carpet?
