If you can wait a week or two on postage the online stores are oodles cheaper

Yet here are people asking for links, be kind to your fellow humans and they will be kind to you in return.

    • +4

Can you recommend an online store pls? Also can you use private health with the online stores? Thanks.

      • Yeah a store that has good return policy if not right or something similar

        • Got a link?

          • @EchoNoob: Nah, I mean i am on the lookout for the same, fwiw check out specsavers online first and if its a high requirement prescription they will ask you to come in store. then its probably not worth getting it done from an online store elsewhere

          • +1

            @EchoNoob: Eyebuy direct
            Zenni optical

Usually have codes floating around for signing up

@shroomish: Buy from Zenni. Do not buy from EyeBuyDirect. They are part of the EssilorLuxottica Monopoly

The company dominates the global eyewear market as the largest single player in that market.[2][3]

They own the following companies: Clearly (Clearly.ca/Coastal.com), Eyebuydirect, FramesDirect.com, LensCrafters, OPSM, Pearle Vision, Sears Optical, Sunglass Hut, Target Optical, Vision Direct, Vision Source, and more. The company has been accused of being a borderline monopoly by using their market dominance to unfairly increase the cost of their products.

        Eyebuy direct
        Zenni optical
Used both, can return within 14 days
        7 to 14 days delivery
Super cheapies available that dont look naff
        Huge range

      • I don't think you can claim private health insurance as it's overseas. But I used Zenni. Cost me $30 USD for a frame + prescription and $10 USD for shipping. Quality is pretty decent but you might need to get it adjusted once it arrives. Mine was a bit too tight but once it was fixed up, no other issues from there.

    • any good online store you would recommend?

There's also clearly. They accept some private insurance companies.

      • I've used visiondirect before. They offer reasonable prices on designer brands, as well as having some cheaper in house brands. You can get rebates from many Australian health funds though which is great, I paid like $12 out of pocket for a nice pair of rimless Oakley glasses a while back. Look for coupons, you can usually apply something.

can wait a week or two

Specsavers also makes you wait two weeks, even when purchasing in store.

      • +2

At least. I have waited 2-4 weeks. Good customer service though

  • All the late year deals because those on private health have already exhausted their annual spend and it won't refresh till end of year.

Has me thinking whether you're actually better off to get new glasses late year with the deals rather than early/mid year at sticker price on your private health.

    • +9

Thought everyone just rushes to use their limit at the end of the year?! Or is that just me as a chronic procrastinator

    • This free polarised deal comes up throughout the year too (around 2-3 times a year with Specsavers) and sometimes the auto clubs offer this as well randomly during the year.

Great way to use any remaining benefits before the end of the year but also if you have no remaining benefit, don't stress it will come up again in the new year.

    • I'm usually rushing in at the end of the year to use up some benefits before Jan 1

  • The free polarised lens option worked out to be cheaper for me compared to last month's Specsaver's deal (all two pairs at $199).

With this deal I got two pairs from the $249 range with one pair having the polarised lens, with no gap payment (my cover gives $200 per year optical, Medibank customers gets a discount on $249 range, hence no gap).

If I had ordered last month, it would have been $100 gap for the polarised lens option for the same pairs.

  • Wait wasn't this always the case?

Is there a difference between polarised and sunglasses?

    • +3

Polarised only lets in horizontal light, reduces glare

      • Huh, I see, thanks!

    • +5

Normal sunnies alone just reduce the amount of light that you see.

Polarised ones cut out horizontal glare (eg. light reflecting off a wet road or from water). This makes it great if you go fishing as you'll be able to see under the surface of the water.

        Sounds good, thanks mate!!

beware polarised lenses block out certain types of screens like my car head up display and train platform screens

    • +6

They shouldn't block any screen that is oriented correctly.

The train uses sideways monitors for their displays, which is why they're not correctly polarised.

It also blocks a lot of vertical billboard advertisements!

Your car has no excuse, that's a messed up place to get that wrong.

      • +3

So what you're saying is polarisation is just IRL AdBlock?

      • That's good to know. Just googled the issue. Apparently a known problem with lots of cars. Something to do with removing glare and reflection on the windscreen

      • na, its a pretty common problem actually. I have that issue myself where some tasks are difficult and do not show properly on my infotainment screen, though i'm used to it now.

  • Can someone clarified bit confuse so i can get any glasses brand so one precripsion glasses and one free polarised len sunglasses? or they have to be the same glasses style to get this offer?

    • Yes, mixing brands are fine. If in doubt, go to ask in store or call.
