Are Cheap Washing Machines Worth It?

I have been looking for a new washing machine as my one is leaking and have broken plastic parts.

My question is:

Are cheap washing machines worth it?
Like Aldi, Kogan or The good guys / Bing lee home brands?

I have looked at other more expensive brands and they ALL have 1 star reviews as well as 5 star.
No matter if it is a good brand or a cheap brand.

I have owned an Aldi washing machine years ago and it seems pretty good but I no longer have it sadly.. I think someone mentioned its hard to get aldi washing machine parts or to get them fixed.

Any advice would be welcome :)

I reckon doing your best to secure a decent brand on sale/dicscounted/factory seconds is the way to go.

I got an LG toploader 7 years ago for around $400 and it has been rock solid. When it eventually dies, defs be going back to LG.

Side note, fisher and paykel WMs are absolute junk in my experience.

fisher and paykel WMs are absolute junk in my experience

Yet I have one that's about 30 years old and still runs just fine.

      • They were well made back then.

      • I don't doubt they used to be good, but that's no longer the case. I have 3 bad experiences in my immediate family. I bought a mid-range one in ~2008 that died within 3 years. My dad bought a top of the line one in ~2012, died a week outside of warranty, bought another top of the range one, died 6 months outside of warranty. F em.

why not see whats broken and youtube it to see if you can fix it
dryer broke, stopped spinning, $30 parts and 1 hour fixed.

    • I have the drum pump underneath is broken.
That hose no longer has anything to attach it self too.
I think a new hose and part is close to $100.
I have already bought a new hose previously.
Plus its a 2nd hand machine over 10 years old so probably not worth keep trying to fix it.

Washing Machines are usually last for 10+ years. Hence get a decent one.
Nothing wrong with Aldi, Kogan but pain to get it service if something goes wrong.
Don't relied on review websites, people only put reviews if things go wrong. Most well known brands are good.

    • i think aldis and kogan do not have any service available, they are just 'box movers'

i do have an issue with that kind of mentality…ie, if unit fails in warranty you just get a refund

i get that it may suit some people as you have effectively had 'free use' of that item for that period

but most people just want that item to work within warranty and beyond

A large family owned whitegoods chain in the USA has this list of service calls to sales ratio for washing machines they sold.

Otherwise I think you are going to get a lot of spotty anecdotal evidence for these sorts of machines that are only replaced every 10-15 years.

My personal life story - Miele (Made in Germany model) bought in 2008, still working as new right now.

  • Some arguments can be made about smaller, less expensive items, but when it comes to whitegoods, buy reputable brands IMO because:

    • You'll likely be happier with the user experience
    • It should last longer vs. the cheap ones, which then means
      a) You won't have to deal with replacement/disposal as often, and therefore
      b) As a result, reduce your contribution to e-waste/landfill

Go cheap but with good warranty

After having our $1300 Bosch washing machine die 2 weeks outside of warranty we decided to get a cheap one ( a haier 8kg front loader $399) still going despite using it daily 9 years later in a family of 6

    • Looks like bosch have a 2 year warranty, what part died on the 2 year old $1300 bosch that made it not worth repairing?

I also would have thought you could easily push for ACL protection on a 2 year old $1300 machine to get it fixed for free.

      • It was an electronic board that died, was told it was going to take an unknown amount of time to fix as the part was out of stock. We finally got a refund after about 1 year. Took many discussions involving various government departments and the supplier

My current kogan outlasted my Miele and is still going.I bought the Kogan for less than the service price of the Miele. It isn't worth servicing products in Australia because our wages are too high.
