Authenticity issue with Beats by Dr Dre headphone deal

Noticed a deal from last night, "Beats by Dr Dre Studio Headphones at Kogan, $239 + $19 Shipping" has been unpublished due to an "authenticity issue". If I recall correctly, there were a couple of comments linking to this page:

http://www.monstercable.com/counterfeit/dealers_blk.asp

Not sure whether that was the sole basis for deletion, but I'm curious what people think of that page in general.

If these headphones are as popular as they seem and carry a large premium for the brand name, that no doubt makes them attractive for counterfeiters. But that page seems FUDishly deceptive in the way it takes "unauthorised" and implies "counterfeit", giving the less careful reader the impression this is some sort of confirmed list of dodgy suppliers. Monster Cable itself isn't the most credible business around, with a reputation for overstating things - could this be another example?

  • That page is definitely misleading. I have no doubt that it was designed to make people think everyone else is selling counterfeit headphones.

To protect their asses, the first line says "…MAY result in you receiving counterfeit or fake products".

Just like buying memory cards online, buyer beware. You may or may not be receiving the genuine article. You'll just have to go on the seller's reputation via comments from other people.

  • they specifically list kogan as an unauthorised seller, but i'm sure kogan would make sure they are genuine stock before selling

I read the thread yesterday and lot of comments were uninformed. People were implying that because it is unauthorised it is fake. Kogan is not an authorised reseller of Samsung, HTC, LG, etc or any brand for that matter - and that is the reason you do not get manufacturer's warranty. There are thousands of sellers online who are not "authorised resellers" of branded products but that doesn't mean they sell counterfeit stuff. Usually these unauthorized resellers are cheaper as they do not go through conventional distribution chains and therefore save on overheads. Having said that, you always got to be careful where you buy your branded stuff from.

I didn't realise that Monster was the brand behind the Beats headphones but now it makes a lot of sense. They are the masters of selling vastly overpriced junk. Look no further than their $500 powerboards and $200 HDMI cables.

Don't waste your money on these garbage headphones. Invest in some decent Beyers, AT's, AKG's if you have money to burn on expensive headphones.

I posted that deal last night, contacted Kogan in the morning. A rep replied that Kogan sold only genuine products and that there is no chance of receiving a fake. Also a quick google search shows no record of fakes being received from Kogan. I just wanted to share a great deal with the community, since Kogan is one of the more trusted online vendors. I think Mods should reconsider the deletion of the deal since it is unlikely that they are counterfeit.

  • I unpublished the deal last night due to two reasons:

    1) kogan.com.au was specifically listed in the unauthorized seller's list. Although I doubt the headphones are counterfeit, it is a precaution to prevent further exposure of the deal to our members especially after the fiasco here.
    2) By the way the comments and votes are going, I suspect the deal will be hugely unpopular.

supernewb101, appreciate the effort of contacting the merchant regarding this issue. I've re-published the deal, but not without a disclaimer at the top to warn members.
