This might sound like a stupid question, but what practical benefit do people get from these things if they live in metro areas, e.g. metro Sydney?

Some might say it’s good for allergies, but is there any benefit from having purified air inside when you get normal air when you step outside/open your window?

    Serious replies only, please.

my nose used to get blocked int he middle of the night if i dont turn it on

      • +1

Ditto. My hayfever doesn't flare up when I turn it on (usually it happens when I flick sheets whilst making the bed).

You can check this map to see the current pollution levels around Australia. Sydney at the moment is showing 32, where I live is 1 and Springwood in Queensland is a whopping 92. Come bushfire season soon you'll see the levels jump up all over the country from all the smoke.

So for a lot of people it can be due to allergies/pets or smoke. A few years ago when the sky was orange and I could see flames in the distance my Xiaomi air purifier was a massive help inside.

So we have two at home, primarily to run when we have people round at the house to minimise potential transmission of airborne illnesses. We have them at work for the same reason. I know a bunch of people who've found them helpful for managing allergies, in a way that just opening windows isn't.

I'll also be happy to have them next time bushfire smoke is blanketing the city, though really hoping that isn't for some time.

well the "benefit" would come down to each person's health condition. And if you live by a main road or train/tram station the "normal air" isn't exactly normal.
Our family live pretty close to the 2019/2020 Green Wattle Creek bushfire. On pretty sever mornings, the readings on our purfier was 450µg/m3 or more. Generally readings over 300µg/m3 is considered hazadous

      • Good point, but most metro trains are electric. Unlikely to be too much airborne pollution caused by trains

        • I guess it depends where you are. We have diesel trains here in greater sydney area

It's called mitigation. Not everything needs to be 100% effective to be worthwhile, few things are.

      Thanks all!

I hadn’t appreciated that even first-world countries can regularly have poor/sub-optimal air quality.

I also have allergies, so may need to think about getting one of these.

      Cheers

Pollen, cooking smoke, neighbours burning shit including foods, diesel engines (major source of pm2.5), hazard reduction burns, visiting relos who send their children to daycare. There is no safe level of pm2.5 ingestion - once particulates get in, they can enter your bloodstream and other organs and your body will not be able to get rid of them because of their size. More and more research points to pm2.5 to be a source of cardiovascular and other chronic disease such as development of asthma (but not a trigger for asthmatic episodes).

This or the Renpho AP-088 for a small study? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725646

    • +1

I have the Renpho and have just ordered this. Not overly impressed with the Renpho, but they're just small issues. The Xiaomi having app control is a solid addition.

      • Has a very audible high pitched "ring" sound when running on low/medium settings. My ears are in fact assholes and accentuate any sounds like this, unsure if they're all like this or just mine, but as soon as I hear it, it's hard to unhear, especially of a night time.

      • LED's are far too bright and I haven't figured out a way to dim them while running on low/medium/high. There is a sleep mode which has the machine operating at an even lower rate and dims the LED's so might be suitable for some, but I'd prefer being able to dim the LED's at whatever speed I desire.

  • A fan with a filter righto..

  • code doesn't work no more

    • Still working here. What does it say for you?

      • This code can't be applied to some of your items.

        • It's not already applied? Mine applied automatically.

          • @Clear: I think something weird happened when I logged into my account and tried to check out and it didn't work, opened incognito and it worked

    • code is automatically applied when I went to checkout.
I got an additional $5 discount because i have ebayplus and it's my first purchase of the month.

I have dust mite allergy and the air purifier has helped heaps when I sleep at night.
Before this when I used to wake up from bed in the morning, I will start sneezing, followed by cold and itchy eyes. This mainly happens when it's a cloudy or rainy day.

Now I wake up fresh most of the days and although there is the occasional 1 or 2 sneezes, I dont have cold and itchy eyes anymore.

  • Thanks Clear, purchased for the first-time experience utilizing an air purifier.

  • Offer ended damn

  • Man Air Purifiers have really gone up in price, my 2H was a little cheaper than this (from 1-2 years ago).

I would recommend this if the size works for you, the filters should be available for a long time. It definitely could be cheaper though.

        • -2

          Republic of China.

          • @Clear: Republic of china because taiwan claims whole mainland china

        • +1

Come on! Can someone please just declare Taiwan independent already to start/end this guy's hallucination. Sleepy Joe? English CAI? Are you listening? Err, I mean watching?

  • Is it ended ? As for the first 30 units. the code doesn’t work.

  • I can't see if this comes with a HEPA filter. I'm assuming if it doesn't then Xiaomi are already making them for this model?

  • @Clear I assume this unit is WiFi enabled, and can therefore be controlled using the Mi Home app similar to the 3H and above?

    • +2

      Yep
