Been using this for the last year, highly recommend for the price

  • Make sure you also buy the regulator to connect to a gas bottle.

    • I suppose this works with existing gas wall outlet?

Sorry, new home, never tried the bbq gas outlet before…

        No.

If you want to barbecue with mains gas from your outlet, you need to buy a specific mains gas barbecue (or a normal barbecue with a conversion kit).

Bottled gas and mains gas are not the same.

        • thanks!

      • BBQ gas and home gas are different. Different calorific values I think. I've got a gas heater that was running on bottled gas in the showroom and when I bought it the plumber changed the jets to suit home gas.

I had one of these. It lasted around 6 months. It was a pain to clean and didn't get very hot. You couldn't really cook things with the cover open. Couldn't really bake things well with the cover closed, either. A pack of sausages would take forever to cook and use a ton of gas. It is an awkward shape to transport and not very durable.

Eventually I got a like-new Coleman EvenTemp off Marketplace for around $100 and it is better than this in every way, plus can be used as a normal cooktop as well. The large flattop is perfect for sausages/pancakes/whatever. Even things like steak are better on the EvenTemp because within 20 seconds or so it is more than hot enough to sear the steak and cook it to medium rare in a few minutes, whereas you would have to preheat the Voyager for ages, then it might sear on one side, but since you opened it the temperature has dropped and it ends up taking ages to actually cook.

I know some would argue that because they are at different price points this isn't a fair comparison, but I would argue with regular use the EvenTemp and similar grills end up being cheaper to own in the long run. Because things don't take as long to cook, you don't have to preheat, and it isn't as affected by things like wind, the EvenTemp uses far less gas than the Voyager. I've used mine daily for around a year and a half now so I know it's been much better value. To top it all off, clean up takes 5 minutes or less, compared to 10 to 20 minutes to properly clean the voyager.

Just to clarify, I'm traveling around Australia full time so I've seen/tested loads of different portable bbqs, listened to other people's thoughts regarding theirs, and whatnot. When I was living in a house I had a pretty typical large bbq, probably cost around $800, but I used it maybe once a week, if that, and it eventually rusted away after a few years so wasn't really worth the money in my opinion. The voyager is potentially good enough if you want to take it out with you on rare daytrips/weekends away and don't want to spend a lot for that privilege. I can't imagine why anybody would want one for home. Maybe living in a small apartment or you live alone? In my opinion you might as well just cook the food on your normal cook top since you won't be getting better results from this.

      • If you can afford it, just get a weber Q and be done with it. Portable, easy to clean, versatile and they last for ages,

    • Thanks
