      • I use Kodi to stream from Real Debrid. Do you think the Shield would be much better than the Mi Box S?

    • Newer C1’s nerfed DTS pass through.

  • i find my fire stick max's do a very good job… what extra/better would this give? i was like a few people on here, using consoles, but the plex app sucks on xbox (or did) and couldn't handle 4k content at all but the fire stick does very well for such a small and cheap device

  • The best small box streaming device available today - and this is a great price.

I do own this one, the Pro 2019 model, since release date in 2019. Works okay for YouTube , Amazon Prime streaming etc, but i wouldn't probably buy it in 2022 in its current state.
Some updates have messed things up and it comes with ridiculously low amount of built in storage.
Yes, you can add more storage but cmon, 16gb built in storage in 2022 still is piss poor.
Cmon nVidia , release a faster one with atleast 256gb storage and keep up with the times.

    • That would be a silly business decision to add more local storage. It would increase the unit price for a feature that not everyone needs. People can just plug in a drive or stream from a NAS.

      • Not when people are getting error messages of it running out of space, when doing updates.
dont believe me, have a look on nvidia forums/google it ..

Like a lot of people have said, this thing just works. This is what I use it for:

    • PLEX….. play large mvk movie files (40-100gb) from external HD
    • All streaming apps in the one place
    • Kodi….. UFC / Bellator / One Championship / Boxing ;)
    • Upscales all my old martial arts movies to much better quality
    • Kids can turn on remote and shield, TV and AV receiver all start up
    • Does it upscale Kodi/YouTube content?
E.g for nba games which look pretty average

  • I have Apple TV is this better than that?

  • Does this work without internet cxn? I.e only reading from usb drive

  • Advantages over PS5? Presumably playing more varied file formats?

  • +1

I still have the first version. Amazing device

  • Cinema apk not working no mo. Anyone have an alternative?

  • Anybody know whether this device can read a MP4/mkv file from a USB drive to play movies locally, and have it work with .srt format subtitle files?

    • very likely.

    • Easily, just install Kodi on it.

      • Thanks!

  • Nice price. As I’ve mentioned in past deals I wish my experience with the Shield was much more positive (old man yells at cloud vibes!). I've had one for a few years (late 2018 purchase to replace a WDTV).

For the most part its ok, does a lot of wiz-bang things, but it doesn't playback ALL of the media I was able to with the old WDTV. That kind of soured my experience (but hey dvd rips work fine). Multiple people said it was either my tv or the way my files were encoded. But those same files (a lot dating from 2010 - through to today) play flawlessly through the usb of the tv (Samsung) itself, no frame skips or audio glitches.

    Still a bargain price!

    • What format can’t the shield do?

  • +1

Apparently the best two streamers are the Nvidia Shield and the Xbox.

I currently use Plex on an Xbox Series X and really can't fault it. It supports Dolby Atmos and HDR.

Having said that, I also use a Google Chrome for the kids and for their needs, that is great too. I havent tested the Atmos and HDR on the Chorme vs the Xbox but for me the Xbox is great.

I assume the Xbox X has a better processor than the shield? I know the Xbox X is newer than the Shield.

    • Microsoft throttles the performance of third party apps on the Series X/S. My Series X is choppy with 100gb remux’s

      • Are you Plexing stuff on the Series X or directly on the Xbox Series X?

I Plex everything and all mostly fine. The only thing I had problem with is 4k h.264 files. I just assumed it was a bandwidth issue because the same 4k file in h.265 worked fine.

I havent tried it directly on the Xbox X (ie USB stick).

        • Plexing from a Synogy NAS. With some of the larger rips, it just doesn’t appear to be smooth.

    • And the worst by far is the PS5 Plex app.

      WHY IS THIS SO?!?

(coming from a die hard PlayStation fan since PS3 days)

      • I havent had much experience with the PS5 and Plex. Why is this? What doesnt work?

  • I got one of these to use as an emulation box. Got the two controllers with it (also work as a remote). Soulcalibur on a Dreamcast emu is lush. Also run Kodi to a NAS. I like this one. No issues.

    • Can U elaborate on the emulation box thing please?

      • start with Retroarch

  • One of these saved my 65"curved TV from going to the scrap heap!
At last I can see movies in real 4K as well as ability to use most of the newer (since 2013) format!

  • wow these are still going I remember getting one of these imported from the U.S. back in 2015! have they been updated since then or still the same hardware?

    • There was a refresh in 2017 which removed the internal drive and added a bunch of general updates, and then a minor one in 2019 which basically added Dolby Vision/AI Upscaling and I think some audio codec passthrough though I think pretty much the exact same hardware as 2017. It's now missing AV1 (you can brute force up to ~1080p in software decode) and HDR on YouTube (albeit bugger all of those two exist content wise yet, they are reaching tipping point where they should become much more common soon with AV1 hardware encoders hitting mass production and YouTube apparently working on fixing their crappy HDR system so it might be worth creators uploading in HDR soon.

  • What's the OZB go for game controllers for this?

    • Xbox controller?

8bitdo pro 2 is what you're looking for

Cash rewards approved for about $8

  • Well this has been a shit show. LG C1 with a series x and a new Denon receiver, and the shield just won’t play nice. Everything is fighting with eachother over CEC.

    • Shield > Amp > TV?

      Everything has the firmware/software updated?

I've got Shield > Yamaha Receiver > Sony TV and majority of the time it's fine, only has a slight hiccup every now and then

      • Yeah that’s the setup I have. All updated firmware although I just signed up to the Hotfix mentioned above. The Xbox and the shield keep switching inputs by themselves.

  • A question for the experts. I've got Plex Server running very nicely on a Synology NAS and have HD HomeRun tuners which provide FTA streaming on my LAN. But I need a client for my projector and some older smart TVs which are no longer that smart.

I've got a Vodafone TV which has been good but it's running out of apps as new versions often won't run on it. A Shield looks to be the best client but the question is which one?

Why would I need the Pro over the non-Pro tube as a streatming/Plex client? I can't see why I should pay more for the Pro when the non-Pro tube (regularly under $200) seems to do everything I need. Or am I missing something?

    • For the cost, I would pay the extra for more RAM, double the onboard storage, and USB ports for external storage. The main thing for me is the Pro can be downgraded to a previous firmware if there's an issue with a specific setup. I'm fussy about that. And root is available (but not necessarily advisable). But the lack of RAM and USB ports is what would put most people off the tube, many complain it struggles with 4K stuff.

    • If all you want is a streaming box just get a Chromecast with Google TV, either the 4K or 1080p one based on what the tvs are. They're cheap and excellent.

The Shield TV Pro is basically if you want to run emulators or stream games.

Good idea. Just ordered an HD one to test it out on an old dumb TV.

Been waiting for this to come on sale for awhile now. Always said to myself, will buy if its $200 or less (Knowing that this might never happen).

Well thanks to the above mentioned sale and actually using my cc reward points - redeemed $50 amazon e gift card. Total was $199 :D.

Used cash rewards also - so hopefully few more dollars off.

Now to sit out the front and wait for the postie.

The current reigning champ by an order of magnitude.

  • Paid a premium for my first Nvidia Shield Pro, I think $380 or something like that, $250 is a bargain, needed a second one so bought it.

  • I think OOS now :'(
I didn't pull the trigger as I have HTPC and couldn't decide
