Third Party Remotes for Nvidia Shield/Kodi

Wondering if anyone is using a third party remote with their Shield that they like?

I've been using an Xbox 360 controller and USB wireless adapter to control Kodi on my Shield (2017) but it seems the adapter has kicked the bucket as of last night. Can't bring myself to pay for a third party Xbox controller adaptor for close to the same price as the official adaptor which is permanently OOS.

The Shield remote is nice but I like having the extra controls for Kodi, plus it's so small that it's always finding its way into crevices (couch or bodily). I have the app as well but hate having to unlock phone, open the Shield app, then wait the couple seconds for it to load my device just to pause what I'm watching.

  • Can you connect the controller with bluetooth?

    • 360 controllers aren't Bluetooth unfortunately.

      • XBONE controllers have Bluetooth. Can confirm they work with Shield without dongle.

  • I added a flirc, it has a Nvidia Sheild profile
You can literally make it work with any of your remotes

    • My Shield remote already picks up the remote for my Sony TV but not consistently, not sure how to activate it. If I'm using the FLIRC will I have issues if I'm trying to use the same remote as my TV?

As long as you assign buttons you dont use for the TV

i vaguely recall being able to use my phone as a remote for nvidia shield, haven't used it in a while though.

    • Yeah as mentioned I already have the app it's just a PITA to use. Have to open my phone, load the app, then wait for the app to load my device. Bit annoying when you just want to press pause or adjust the volume.

I use the WeChip G20 Remote Control. It's $24 on Amazon

    • Yeah just seen that, are you using it with Kodi?

Thanks mate, been using it for a week and it's great. Just what I needed.

Got a flirc to use with my Harmony remote (IR only). Took DAYS to get it sorted it out and in the end I ended up using an old FLIRC V1 as the newer FLIRC seem to have some weird issues, at least mine did. Must check for a FW update to see if it's fixed.

    • Yeah think I'm going to go with the WeChip G20 as that's the lowest total cost option and is recommended on the Kodi forums.
