[QLD] OzBargain 16th Birthday - Capacity Reached! - Brisbane Meetup - 12:30 p.m. Saturday, November 12th @ Shabuhouse

Capacity Reached! Thank you all.

Happy Birthday, OzBargain!

Let's have another fun day out, fill our tummies, and play some bargain-centred games.

Event Details

Date: Saturday, November 12th 2022
Time: 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Where: Shabuhouse, 1/70 Mary Street, Brisbane City, QLD 4000
Cost: Lunch and entry are free to OzBargain members (buy your own drinks, alcohol available)
How you can help: We're still looking for sponsorships from vendors who can provide prizes or giveaways for the event. PM me!

How to RSVP

Only about 50% of those who have RSVP'd to events in the past actually show. Many people who aren't members also show up.

To help us plan better and because the venue is capped at around 40 guests, this year, like many of the other birthday events there will be a $5 deposit required to RSVP. The deposit is fully refundable if you let me know you can't make it at least 24 hours before the event.

On the day just let me know your username, and I'll give you $5 cash back at the door. Any money not claimed will be put towards the bill.

Where to send the deposit

Capacity Reached. There may still be space available at the Big Roddy's meetup.

Let's make this birthday the best one yet!

(A big thank you to The Wololo Wombat, knobbs, and chrisie for helping me organise this great day!

FAQ

Can I bring my kid?
If they are an OzBargain member, yes. Keep in mind this is a meetup that will be filled with loud, bargain-hunting, intoxicated adults. The food is a bonus, but many will be there for the banter and chats.

Is there a minimum age?
No, but see above.

Will there be vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options?
Yes. Please inform me at the door; we can eat the weird options together.

Why is there a deposit? Who is holding onto the money? What happens if I can't come? How will my deposit be returned?
Please see the RSVP'ing section above.

I can't use Beem
Please try to so I can keep everything in one place. If you really can't use it, PM me and I'll provide alternative payment options. Seriously please try to use Beem, though!

Can I trust you?
I ran the Perth 2019 meetup, Brisbane 2021 meetup, went to the 2018 Brisbane meetup, and have been registered on here over 11 years. Also, it's five bucks.

Will there be t-shirts?
I'm in talks with scotty to hopefully get some sent down. They will be used as prizes for various games/activities as we likely won't have enough for everybody.

How long do I have to be a member for?
There is no minimum amount of time you must have been a member. Please keep in mind that OzBargain are donating $35 for each person attending so it's always nice to try and contribute back by being an active user!

  • Great Thank You - Count me in :))

  • +1

    Would be keen as well.

  • Thanks for hosting again!

    Can't believe it's been a year already! :O

    I am keen too!

    • Hope you can make it!

  • Oh man, as a toowoomba local this might be my closest one.

    • +1

Shoulda hosted one during the flower festival that seemed to flood my IG feed nonstop. Surely many ozbargainers woulda been in town.

      • That could be the go for next year. Plenty of great places near flower filled parks too.

    • +6

I'm living near Towoomba atm - perhaps we could do a second one if there's enough support!

      • Toowoomba would be great.

  • yes!!! can't wait!

  • +5

Would love to join. What about 1-Up Arcade? @scotty It's only $495 for two hours full venue hire including unlimited play for everyone. Is that within the budget?

    • Any of 18, 19 or 20th suits me if it is during the day. I would need to leave by 1pm.

    • +1

Should be within budget for 14+ people. ~$35pp

    • Timing restriction probably rules this option out:

Full venue hire must be outside of regular trading hours (Wed-Sun, 12-8pm).

      • 10am-12pm on a weekend?

    • +1

It looks like an awesome option. We've aimed for something where we can chat a bit more this year but it's a sweet idea.

Hopefully, you can make the event! Would be good to see you again.

  • Surely this is a night time event

    • Friday night would be ideal for me but whatever time it happens I hope everyone that can go enjoys it!

    • +1

Usually it is a weekend lunch, generally easier to book in a large crowd.

  • +3

    Can I come anonymously?

  • thanks for organising, i am available on those dates

  • where was it held previous years?

    • +3

Rib place in the valley last year. Food was awesome

      • Ribs and rumps that's closed down now?

        • +2

          No Big Roddy's

          • +1

@quop: Big Roddy's is so good - fairly good value too.

            • @zaphy: they are pretty expensive for burgers and ribs

              • +2

@Poor Ass: Most of their burgers are $14-$15 and the half-rack of pork ribs is $25 (with a free side!). That's pretty decent by 2022 standards. The Valley store has $5 beers too.

                • @zaphy: I bought the Groupon there once and found portions to be so so. Maybe I needed more

  • +3

Mate - I'm in and keen to be involved in organising it! For those that know, I had 'quite the year' on this website!

    • Did you get that mouse outta your house?

      • Haha. Iā€™ve yet to see another. So I believe it was a solo sojournerā€¦ my house is now baited and trapped if he returns!

My posts about the real issue are now deleted though!

        • +1
  • +3

Depending on my schedule, i might be able to sponsor (or at a very cheap cost) provide a photo booth if you guys are interested.

    • If this is still on offer, I'd love to chat more. PM me.

  • +1

    Thanks
Looks a good selection if it's Pizza you want, can I suggest a Chinese or Thia meal - will have a look around.

    • +2

yes, it is a combination of pizza / pasta in those places.

Othwise we can go to :

      https://www.shabuhouse.com.au/our_pricing/ - saturday lunch - adults - 35 dollars
Just in line with budget that scotty gave us. Also based on the calendar date @stickyfingers gave us, we can do shabuhouse on 19 Nov lunch ?

      • +1

        This one looks GOOOOOOOOOOOOD :)

        Gives everyone a choice.

  • +1

        • Well wherever the event is, a booking will be made…

    • No worries! Hopefully you can make the date we've planned :)

  • +1

Woah it's that time of year again? Hopefully I'll make it this time! Missed last year

    • Scary how quickly it goes. See you there!

  • -6

Pomona Distillery QLD, in the Noosa hinterland is a great idea, thanks Dave Blundell.
    https://pomonadistilling.com.au/pages/booking

    • This is a Brisbane meetup? Noosa is 2hrs at least.

      • -3

Noosa is 1hr nth, not 2hrs at least. If you're poor stay there.

        • +1

Can I sleep in your benz?

  • IM in

  • Would love to join but will be working until 3PM on the dates :( if it's on eithet 25, 26 or 27th I can definitely come!

    • We're booked in for the 12th. Hopefully you aren't stuck at work then!

  • +1

Is this one going ahead? Would like to know what dates, 26, 27, 28 I can come :)

    • All booked in, just slightly different dates. Hope to see you there!

  • +2

Hey - I'm not heard from sticky fingers in a few days - but he mentioned I could help organise!

I'm in down on Saturday the 12th of November.

I was thinking of doing Roddy's Ribs in Southbank - like we did a few years back. Ben's with the Karaoke also sounds good (previous suggestion)

    What do people think?

    • I haven't heard from @stickyfingers of late either ?
"Roddy's Ribs in Southbank" - I could see parking being a problem maybe.

      • That will be every place essentially no? What restaurant is going to have 40+ car spaces available ?

        • Last year the Valley one did Ok for free car parks.

      • +1

I could see parking being a problem maybe.

It is a ~500m walk from a train or bus, for those able to utilise those services.

    • Ive been to both Southbank and the valley branches. Compared to the valley one southbank one is much smaller in my opinion

      • +3

We hosted it here last a few years ago and it worked really well… If I get 5 'upvotes' on this comment, I'll make it official and contact RODDY for a booking.

      • +1

+1 the Valley one is twice the size, better vibe there. They also have the $5 beers, the Southbank one doesn't.

  • +2

Sorry, all. I've had a lot going on but am back now. Let's get this party going.

The Wololo Wombat, knobbs, and chrisie are all helping to organise this event. I've organised a group chat so we can all communicate and we're aiming for lunch on Sunday the 13th now. Once we get a venue locked in, we'll get it in the post.

    • Sweet as … will be there with the wife and child, OZB Style šŸ˜Ž

    • I'm happy to help organise as well.

      See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12885019/redir

Otherwise I can possibly split for a different day?

It's possible to use gift cards for after best price negotiation?

  • +1 unless a Gold coast one pops up

    • Do the drive. We'll make it worth it. Or at least the food will.

  • +1

    Possible Venue Ideas:

    I enjoyed food at:

Here's OzBargain Brisbane 16th Birthday Venue on Google Maps where you can edit and add more suggestions. Just ask me to enable editing or adding in more venues.

    • +3

      Thanks brisdaz.

We're just trying to figure out what venue will work best to encourage a social atmosphere rather than having guests split off into their own groups. Hope to have an update soon. Apologies for the delay.

      • +1

Yes for this event we're on the same page. Last event I'm not sure how much mingling there was - some did mingling but others did not. I'm not sure we can get everyone mingling but most is definitely possible.

A restaurant crawl (like a pub crawl) as fun as that maybe I don't think the current organisers want to do.

We don't have time to flesh that idea out in the next few weeks but if anyone else is interested and put a persuasive proposal I'm sure that at least one of the other OzBargain birthday organizers/attendees around Australia may consider it.

        • +1

Cool idea. Maybe you could plan it for next year? I'd love to join in.

    • Did you go any of my recommends lol

  • +1

Last year was great, had great food & still love the black t-shirt won by my son. Count me in plz. Can we look at some Thai Restaurants. Or we can Try Dirty Sultan, The Prince Concert etc. Happy to dig in more names if needed.

    • +1

Did the tee get confiscated? šŸ¤£

  • +2

Sounds greatšŸ‘ I'll be there - again.
    The Infidel

  • +3

It's official! Apologies for the delay and short notice everybody, but we're locked in.

In order to come you must RSVP. I've placed instructions in the post.

Sorry to ask for a deposit; however, this venue has limited spaces, and it'll really help us plan the day better. It's still a free event though! Just a deposit.

    • +3

Yes! I will personally be funding bottles of SakƩ as for prizes to the for the following categories:

      Ultimate Bargain
      Most Delicious Forum Post
      Worst Deal (Deal Gone Wrong)

And maybe one for the 'Almost Illegal' (like, a deal that almost crosses the line from a bargain toā€¦ wellā€¦ more than a bargain…)

Looking forward to hearing your best stories!

    • +1

thanks for organising @stickyfingers , The Wololo Wombat, knobbs, and chrisie !

    • Thanks for organising. I'm in and have just RSVP'd, though Beem tells me this:

Heads up! Your payment won't be instant.

@stickyfingers hasn't set up their account to receive instant payments yet.

The payment will automatically be processed once they do this.

      • Thanks quop. Iā€™ve been in touch with Beem support today regarding this. Supposedly Macquarie Bank debit cards do not support eftpos anymore and so Iā€™ve had to add another card. You shouldnā€™t get that message anymore.

A couple of payments have come through. Iā€™ll make a spreadsheet of those who have RSVPā€™d soon so you can check if Iā€™ve received your deposit.

  • Hey still enough time to RSVP? Old girls bday next weekend so need to double check there's no clash.

    • Yep, you're welcome to RSVP up to the day.

      • old girl having 60th same time so it's a pass for me, will have to see if GC one goes ahead.

  • +1

Just a reminder to get your RSVP's in.

I've added a Google Sheets spreadsheet to the bottom of the post where I'm recording all deposits received. It may take me a few hours to add you in there once you send your deposit.
