Help Me Buy Oculus VR/ Meta Quest 2 for The Cheapest Price

Hey people of ozbargain!

I recently tried the quest 2 at a friend's place and absolutely loved beat saber on it and really want to buy one!

But the recent price increase (which makes it $630) has really made me think again :/ .

I know about getting it direct from meta right now will include free beat saber, but I was wondering if there is a cheaper way to buy it right now? Are there going to be any upcoming deals for it on Amazon or similar? depending on how long that is , I can try waiting..

Would you recommend getting second hand? I don't prefer it but keen on your experience/thoughts

Thanks folks!

depends how much they are going for second hand but probably the prices would be pretty crap - not to mention the whole hygiene thing - I get SWEATY as hell in this thing.

might as well wait for black friday - but the way things are going i dont think there will be anything decent on base model.

    • Hygiene is easy. Just get 3rd party headset.
And swap the face sponge thing. Everything basically replaceable. Almost.

      • thats what i mean - with the amount of stuffing around might as well buy new - i doubt they could find anything deeply discounted to make it worth - not to mention you dont know if the headset has had any sun damage or handsets damaged by bashing into walls/ceiling etc.

      • Sorry what do you mean by a third party headset? Do you mean swap the sponge part that's in contact with your face on the headset?

        • Sorry 3rd party headband or headstrap. The thing around our head.
          And the sponge as well.
If paranoid, buy lens protector (the 2 lens insode). Then wipe everything else with alcohol

    • Occular herpes?

    • Thanks, yeah I agree, it's so hard to resist and wait until black friday! :/ But I know that is the sensible thing to do to save the dollaroos…

The prices on marketplace near my area for good condition ones is $450 - $500. Do you think that's still a good price for second hand and no warranty plus the risks if smaller damage that can go unnoticed when I first see it?

      • I think so. Especially if comes with other accessories.

    128gb is slightly cheaper?

I think that's what OP is already talking about as expensive. 128GB = currently $630. There is no cheaper model now.

  • I wouldn't expect a discount before Black Friday since the price increase was very recent and the USD is getting stronger.

Your best bet is Black Friday. You'll get Beat Saber + $47 store credit if referred via the mobile app.

The AUD is expected to trend downward against the USD for a long time, so the Quest 2 might even go up in price again here, until a potential Quest 3 release next year.

I did notice a $50 Amazon store credit last month, but since you can get $47 meta store referral credit any time, this wasn't worth much.

    • I haven't seen a price reduction since the price bump by meta. Are there high chances of a deal then in your opinion? I know you can't predict, just asking…

  • I think you should just buy it now. We might all be dead soon.

Totally. Whats the point of living without beat saber…. once you play you cant stop…

I think he was more hinting at the virtual girlfriend experience.
Not enough time to get a real girlfriend, so best case scenario is bonding with your virtual girlfriend with noise cancelling headphones on in those final moments while the nukes are dropping around you.

        • Trance moments.. priceless

      • Lol, i sense both sarcasm and truth here :D

  • I asked a similar question before. Best advice seemed to be wait for the new models to release because the price hike was meant to bring the Quest 2 closer to the price of the new model making the new model look like better value.

Meta had a livestream event recently where they announced the Quest Pro for $1500 which seems to be for business types and has a lot of features that are not needed for home VR use. But leaks have said there is a cheaper model coming which borrows parts from both Quest 2 and Quest Pro for an in between VR device.
I don't think they announced it but it might be one of those surprise release deals.

Also one more headset that is already out and more modern than Quest 2 is the Pico 4. But it's only available in SEA countries for now apparently.

Main reason I am going to wait for these newer devices is because they use pancake lens. This means the headset is much slimmer and doesn't stick out so far at the front like previous headsets such as Quest 2.

    • I was waiting for the meta connect too and the new headset that was released is way too expensive for the normal consumer. I don't think I am ever going to spend that much on VR. Which other headset are you talking about and when do you think that's going to arrive? Have you tried the pico 4? Is that any good?

      • I am in the same boat as you, complete newbie to VR. I didn't know the price hike was going to happen so when it did I deeply regretted not jumping on the $429 or $479 Amazon deal which came with a $100 Amazon giftcard.

Meta Connect 2022 already happened and yeah they only announced the Quest Pro which is a commercial use model so not really directed at normal consumers. Features like high quality color pass through to see the room is more for "Meta universe" virtual business meetings etc.

Look up the Meta VR leaks on youtube to learn about the middle Meta model. I can't remember exactly which videos I watched now, but I watched a bunch and there are blueprint type things leaked on the other Meta headset so it seems pretty reliable to me. I also think someone found a prototype of the middle model in a hotel room (I haven't confirmed this though if it was the Quest Pro or the mid model). Estimated price is slightly above the Quest 2 but those VR experts on youtube said it combines parts from both the Quest 2 and Quest Pro for a much more modern VR headset. e.g. pancake lenses have been confirmed in the blueprints on the middle model.

I have not tried the Pico 4 but it also has pancake lenses and looks even slimmer than the leaked mid model Meta headset. The really appealing part about the Pico for me is it supports hand tracking. This means you can interact with VR using just your hands no need to hold controllers which I think will add to the feeling of immersion. It seems like in some ways the Pico 4 might be superior to the mid model Meta but we will never know until the mid model Meta is released.
Also since Pico 4 does not seem to be available in Australia it is kind of out of reach until there are ways to purchase it. But I am guessing if they want to compete or out sell Meta headsets they will be more likely to bring the Pico 4 here than not?

        • Thanks, pico is interesting will have a look. But if it's not coming to Australia soonish, it's probably out for me.

I think I won't be able to wait that long for another device that may come at some point. There are always new devices coming and you could keep waiting haha, my opinion anyway.

          • @polarq: Yeah but the main reason to go with the new version is the Quest 2 is already getting old. I know it's hard to recommend when there is no announcement or timeline.. but the value seems to there in terms of getting the new middle Meta headset because of so many improvements inside. And the price hike just makes that even more so.

It's totally up to you, but since I haven't tried VR at all yet I can wait.

Here are some more deets that I learned. The Quest 2 is very front heavy, so apparently longer periods with the included strap gets uncomfortable and in some cases sliding off your face. So most Quest 2 users recommend getting the additional "advanced strap with battery" which is not only a better strap but balances out the weight at the front. Also the included eye cover also gets uncomfortable quick, so they suggested spending $30 or so on an aftermarket silicone eye cover. These two things at least were mentioned as "must haves" with the Quest 2. Add the cost of these to the Quest 2 and it might be close in price to the new middle model Meta.

            • @harshbdmmaster718: That is probably the problem, I tried it and really enjoyed the experience which is making it a lot harder to resist.

If you really want to wait, dont try it :)

              • @polarq: Yup no worries. Just trying to provide you with the information I have as well in case helps to make your decision.

                • @harshbdmmaster718: definitely appreciated! thanks for that

                  • @polarq: Hey some updates for the "Quest 3" I just read.

To save you from reading the article here is the TLDR:
Zuck says "It's not this year" (release date). Which isn't saying much I guess because we have 2 months left.

Price range will be USD $300, $400 or $500 (AUD $474 ~ $790). Pretty sure the pricing is for the different storage sizes. Article says these AUD prices but I converted it with google and they just typed the direct conversions, so I expect extra 10% tax added which will make it more like AUD $522 ~ $869.

Also Quest Pro price was $1500 USD. So in Australia it's $2500 which just confirms it is meant for businesses not consumers. Nobody is going to spend $2500 just to play some VR at home lol.

Article also mentions the Pico 4. Says it "might" come down to Australia eventually.

  • Another question, if I get a used headset can i still get the referral credit from someone's link?

    • Unlikely because the serial number may have already been used to make a claim.

  • Lol thanks for the post. I’m in the same situation. I want to set up a virtual clinic with Quest 2. Looks like no Black Friday deals today.

I couldn’t help but giggle at everyone enjoying beat saber. There was a German guy who fractured his neck playing this game and went to hospital. A case report was written about this and the only reason why I know it was beat saber is because I asked the author/doctor. VR headsets are a potential health hazard!

You can read about it here:

    • I am mainly looking forward to beat saber after i buy it. :D lol

i think black friday sales have not all kicked in yet, so I am still hopeful and keeping an eye out for a good price. 🤞

    • you posted the same message again… are you a bot?

      • Nah but a bit deleted the original cos of my link was considered against the rules

  • Sometime the 128gb quest 2 sells for 350 on eBay? Did you get it?

    • I ended up getting during black friday sale with the amazon credit which is like money for me considering how much I shop there (spent the credit in 2 days :o)
