  You can, it just that they will start rotting & decomposing after a while

  They definitely will last longer in the fridge but they're not some miracle food. Use them in a few weeks tops or freeze them (they'll stay good for a couple months).
  
  Problem is you mightn't have long left if these have been sitting at room temp for a while already.
