These frozen prawns are never nice to eat.

    • +4

      Try thawing them.

What is the point of cooking the prawns before freezing? I only buy raw, fresh or frozen, not sure why.

You normally try sell prawns fresh before selling them cooked.
Cooking then kind of 'resets' their shelf life so if they are raw and expiring the next day then cooking and freezing then means when they defrost they won't expire the next day lol

Prawns are often too far from market to be sold fresh (e.g. a trawler at sea), so must be frozen.
But what is the benefit of cooking before freezing?

Try thawing them in a bath of salty water (add prawns, add water and then a decent amount of salt). They will defrost very quickly and drain the minute they are feeling firm, but defrosted. Salt should help the taste and because they are thawed quickly, you should avoid that watery mush texture (you get this when they thaw slowly in their own watery mes). They will never be as good as fresh, but I found this method is the best (we used it at work when I was younger).

Bought a box the other day, bit of a mixed bag with sizes - Some large-ish, lots around medium size and some pretty small/tiny but for around $10 per kilo its worth it.

They taste fine to me, no issues in terms of quality - about the same as what you would expect to find in a buffet but I'm not a gourmet by any means. Would definitely buy again but freezer is full at the moment haha

I usually let the prawns thaw overnight in the fridge before eating as I find that helps them retain their flavour better. Had previously tried chucking them in cold water or doing a quick 1 minute blanche in hot water to speed up the thawing process but I found they taste washed out and lose their flavour with those methods.

  • Bought some to eat during the Kambosis fight tomorrow. Will reserve my judgement until then

It's sad we live in a country with some of the best seafood quality in the world, yet we still freeze prawns. If they sold these fresh @ $15/kg they would sell out very quickly and still make more money for the fisherpersons

There are some independent seafood stores sell fresh prawns for $39 a kilo. We mostly cannot afford fresh seafood not that we want frozen seafood. There is a documentary on how Australian live lobsters exported to China and immediately cooked and served to their customers in restaurants within the same day. It is all about money.

    Storewide? Do you mean statewide?

  • These are snap frozen onboard the boat. At this price they will be soft & broken of various sizes.

You thaw them in clean ocean water with half a handful of additional salt, or heavily salted fresh water.

Peel (don't forget to clean the poo chute) and chuck on buttered white bread YUM

  • Spudshed really going downhill with quality. Used to go there for ok quality fruits with cheap Prices , but now they are selling very low quality with higher prices , Compared to the fruits in the Waneroo market for examples … never trust / shop In spudshed anymore.
