Got Charged $1244.48+ Instead of $306.92 after Booking with Qantas Pay + with Points

I made an overseas flight booking to Indonesia with points + pay on 29 April 2022 and in the checkout page that I have screenshotted, I got charged $306.92 + 154000 Qantas points.

I saw a pending charge on my credit card for $306.92

On 22 July 2x $622.24 aka total $1244.48, and yes, my points were still deducted by 154000. The pending charge of $306.92 from 29 April were gone.

I did not consent to be charged $1244.48.

I have contacted my credit card provider and I told them I will ask Qantas to solve this issue first before filing chargeback.

I contacted customer service with all the screenshot I have, and they replied with:

We have had a look at booking reference number xxxxx, and checked with the relevant department. Upon investigation we found that there was no additional charges taken.

The screenshot that you have sent also shows that the transaction is pending, which means the money is still with your bank in the reserved funds. This pending transaction should have been dropped back into your account by now.

If you have further comments relating to your file, you can always call 13 13 13. Thank you for choosing Qantas.

That is very frustrating.

I would like to chargeback to my credit card provider, but I'm afraid Qantas will ban me flying with them.

Any suggestion? Anyone has the same experience?

  • In the statement/transaction history, are there the extra charges made out to/by Qantas?

    • no, the $306.92 pending charge was gone and it wasnt in my statement. I did have the screenshot however when the pending charge happened

Have you confirmed with your bank that your card was charged or the charges are still pending as per Qantas?

Were you actually charged the $306.92 from April? If not, you may want to confirm your flights… I'm going through this hassle now - Qantas failed to take payment in April and offered me a choice of paying almost double or cancel my flights >: (

    • The charge of $306.92 was a pending charge in my CC, that I expected to go through - as per usual flight booking. This thing. only happened to me once.

Your case is interesting, how did Qantas failed to take payment? might be similar to my case, except they did not offer me, just instead charged me 4x the price.

      • After a few more back and forths with Qantas and my bank, it was indeed as @uncompressed mentioned. At time of booking, Qantas makes a pre-authorisation request for the ticket amount. At time of ticketing, instead of taking funds from the pre-authorised amount, they make a completely separate attempt to take funds which many banks would flag as a duplicate and decline.

The above may explain the duplicate - if Qantas failed to take payment the first time for the $622, their system just tries again. If you enquired with your bank, it wouldn't surprise me if Qantas attempted to take $622 more times and was blocked from doing so lol

If you have a copy of the original email with invoice showing $306 + points, that should be enough to get your refund, it'll just take a while for Qantas to sort their shit out. However, if the $1244 is still pending, you may be able to ask the bank to decline payment?

if you charge back, your flights booked will be cancelled for sure.

Any suggestion? Anyone has the same experience?

There seems to be a awful long time between these charges, are you sure you didn't book any other qantas flights and forgot about them?

      1. The flight has happened.
      2. No, I did not book any other Qantas flight. In fact, I called my cc provider straight away to block my card as I was wondering who the heck is using my cc for qantas booking. I have the only flight booking that I made on 29 April, which I redownloaded the invoice, it is said ticket issue date : 22 july 2022 (rather than 29 april) and charge amount is $1244.48 + 150k points
      • Hmm, my original booking was on April 27… I wonder if their payment system was having an issue around that time?

I'm not surprised. Their system is so screwed.

I booked a flight and was charged both the full amount of the flight and also an additional "pre-authorization" hold on the same value for flight booking. While the additional charges are indeed pending only, it did lower my credit limit on the card for a good amount of time before it dropped off. Very annoying.

Huh, I think this might be the problem I'm having with my flight booking issues now.

A Qantas agent was able to sort my flights out and sent it to ticketing where it was rejected because the payment was declined. I immediately checked with my bank and they said that Qantas took pre-auth for the full amount and then made 4 more attempts to charge the card the full amount again! I didn't have available credit for double the cost of the flights so naturally my bank declined the subsequent attempts.

      • Yep. They make it out as not big of a deal since it's a pre-authorization, but that means a chunk of credit can't be used on your card anymore. Very annoying.

        • I raised the issue of pending vs. actual charge and the agent I was speaking to went through a rather archaic process of removing the pre-auth, involving filling out forms and faxing(?!) it off to the bank. I'm not confident the pre-auth would be removed any earlier…

    Life ban in 3…2…1…

  • contact the bank with reference to Qantas' email? if no luck get the bank to write an email and than take a copy of your statement and the email back to qantas

  • What charge does the 29 April 2022 e-mail receipt say?

    • None. When I book on 29 April 2022, I didnt receive any email from Qantas.

    You gotta ring them.

I'm also not surprised by this.

Before you ring them work out what you want. I reckon you should be able to get a total refund of points and payments out of them without any cancellation charges. But getting them to honour the flight at the reduced price seems trickier.

How much are similar flights now? Or have you already taken the flight? Consider other carriers too.

    • I have taken the flight

      • If you have already completed the journey, request a charge back with your card provider. Qantas would then have to substantiate the legitimacy of the transaction to the card provider or you get your money back !!
