A Noob with Car Tech Questions

looking to buy a new car soon and need some advice, been more a tech nerd than a car enthusiasts so things about 0-60 time and horsepower and torque don't really mean much to me. Been looking around the options and the stuff included and it's really quite a lot of stuff to look at in terms of features these days so hoping for some recommendations and maybe some answers to some questions

I'm quite interested with the digital car key technology that's been going about quite a bit, but it seems the adoption in Australia is nowhere near as much as I thought. An article I read was listing quite a lot of manufacturers in US making this standard from 2020 models onwards but the reality in Australia, I think I've only seen in BMW and Tesla. Anyone know any other ones that offer this, and whether it is across all the cars or only specific models.

Also noticed that often with these manufacturers, you can do wireless apple carplay or android auto at their base model, but once you upgrade to like the GT model or smth you suddenly get a downgrade to only the wired version. The salesman told me this had to do with the sat nav package inclusion, somehow that interferes with the wireless technology? Was wondering if anyone tried to hook up one of those third party devices that makes your wired carplay/auto into wireless as a means to overcome this and whether this was a good solution

Above 2 were the main things my tech nerd side was curious about. If there are any notable tech stuff anyone wanted to make me aware of to help in my search would be helpful. Salesman told me park assist is actually not as good a feature as it's made out to be. I don't consider myself that bad at parking but I always felt that was a good feature to get still .

In terms of petrol vs diesel vs hybrid vs plug in hybrid vs full electric, I tot I was certain about going full electric when I started this , but now I'm sorta whatever on that subject. Living in SA Adelaide area and I don't know if the electrical options are quite set up for SA yet. But then petrol prices also not looking good these days I guess

As mentioned before the actual car stuff I don't know too much about but if there's something you feel I really should not sacrifice, I'm happy to take that advice as well as I don't know much about what actually is practical and what's actually more tailored for Jeremy Clarkson.

Thanks for any advice. Dunno if my question should really be more in the tech/electronic sections given the questions but since I do need general automotive advice too I figured I'll ask here

EDIT: seems I've added too much text so let's try a tldr
- Looking for tech heavy car
- prefers to have digital key technology
- would like wireless android auto/apple carplay
- need advice if you're a car guy about anything important on the car spec to not sacrifice

Budget maybe say, about 100k for now and see what we get, prefer sedan or SUV, not hatchback

Christ, that’s a wall of text… TL;DR by any chance?

What digital key technology are you talking about?

And why would they make all their models wireless ACP/AA but make their highest level option wired? I think you got something arse about there…

Bloody hell, I just went back and read all that and all I can think to tell you OP is: Just buy a Tesla… It’s what most clueless people who want lots of tech and that whole Apple-esque ecosystem feel from their car.

Yeah, I couldn't be bothered reading a novel ATM.

You want tech in a car I don't think you'll beat a Tesla for that. Be prepared to spend $$$$$$ for that tech.

I honestly rather save 50k+ and just buy a reliable car to get from a 2 b.

Everyone has different needs I guess. Just can't justify getting raped for it

      • Yea the obvious answers would be a Tesla but that's mainly why I was asking to see if anything else worth considering. From what I understand with Tesla is that if you should ever find that there was something wrong, even if it may be under warranty, it'll take forever to get it fixed because the parts are so limited. Granted I know there's a supply issue at present but it's more the fact that the car hasn't been around much and most parts are used for building new cars.

Other issue I have is that everything in Tesla is on the touchscreen more than any other vehicle, and it can be harder to adjust certain settings on the fly compared to your traditional button and switch format.

Wants tech, but doesn’t want tech. That’s a conundrum.

The top line models only having wired CP/AA is absolutely a thing, I've been told it's related to licensing the sat nav companies enforce. No idea if that's actually the reason but I know for a few manufactures it holds true that the models with sat nav (only the high end) only support wired CP/AA.

    Tell us….

    Your budget
What sort of car do you like
What you will be doing with the car

    • -2

What you will be doing with the car

      They’ll probably be driving…

      • Ok thanks. You know what I'm asking….

      • Well if it's electric there is no exhaust pipe. So there is that also I guess.

    • That's really where he should of started from.

No point suggesting a car, ends up being 130k then says. I don't have that kind of money 🤣🤣

      • Sorry, ended up with the wall of text and still not really getting the message through. Goes to show how noob I am with this…..

    • Say a rought max of 100k maybe?
      Like sedan>SUV>hatchback
Mainly city driving I think likely short distances in most occassions

    TLDR, get a Camry

    • -1

      Or a Corolla

  • +2

So this why cars are now giant boring screens

  • Car tech? You are looking for a TESLA

  • +1

Get a Peugeot - it's french for tech. Well it's either that or sh^tbox, my French isn't great.

    • +3

It's a sh^tbox along with All the other french cars 🤣

  • Best to test drive Tesla Model 3 or Y. Nothing like it and it constantly improves through over the air updates.

  • the bmw smart key sucks, i know i had one

    • Sucks how? Also, smart key =/= digital key

  • +4

    so things about 0-60 time

Stop watching US car reviews. 0-100 time is where it's at in Australia.

    • -1

Not as many Australian car reviews tho

      • There are heaps

  • You can buy wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay adapters that convert wired into wireless. They're about $100 and work just as good as OEM wireless systems.

    • What brand do you use and you got all the features of wired version?

Yes, it behaves exactly as with a wired connection. Connects straight away whenever I jump in the car. So much better than wired.

        • Thanks, that at least solves the android auto/apple carplay thing

  • If you went the fancy tech, you’re going to need to get the top spec model of whatever you choose. It’s all the gimmicky tech add ons that they omit from all the base models. All the good stuff is across the range because it’s good.

The gimmicky tech stuff is also the stuff most likely to fail in a car, and the most likely to cost more to repair.

Unfortunately modern cars are powerful, quiet, Comfortable and efficient enough that it comes down to design and tech as to which you think is best.

If you want to buy a car with tech, get a Tesla. If you want to buy a decent car that’ll work well for a long time, get a Toyota.

Maybe just go buy a BYD and save petrol and $ over a Tesla.

    • I always figured the moving parts were more likely fail lol , but yea my main concern with the tech is if the operating system sucks, and then manufacturer not bothering to fix

  • Go drive a Tesla 3 and Y then post back

  • Budget maybe say, about 100k for now and see what we get, prefer sedan or SUV, not hatchback

What you’re asking is too broad a question to get any decent answers. Then, you’re budget will get you just about anything you want. Come back when you’ve narrowed it down to 2 or three if you want any decent opinion.

Then, don’t forget that most of the posters here look at cars valued half your budget and think $100k on a depreciating object is just chucking money away. It’s a diminishing return once you get over about $50k. That is, a $100k car isn’t twice as good as a $50k car, you are generally paying a lot for a badge.
