  • Is this a good upgrade from your normal run of the mill nespresso with pod option?

It's like upgrading from a Daewoo to a Lexus.

Highly recommended. I bought it last week from the good guys (price matched powerland).
Excellent machine. I sold my Breville to buy it. Worth it

    • Which Breville?

Great price, chepast I have seen before was $999 from Myer

  • With the price close to $1000, will a manual coffee machine better? I am still using Nespresso Creatista. Thanks

Most domestic machines are either semi automatic or automatic even if they have a removable grouphead (although they'll be in a 'manual' section at department stores). These Delonghis are super automatic.
I was a barista for 7 years. I've got a lovely old Gaggia Factory manual machine. But I have a Delonghi (without the milk function) on my kitchen counter and I use it every day. I'm happy with how I have it set up and I don't have to make room for a grinder and a knock box as well as the machine. It's easy to use, clean, and it hasn't missed a beat in 5 years.
If you want to learn the process of dosing, grinding, and tamping, then get an automatic machine. If you'd like the experience of adjusting the length of the pour, get a semi automatic. If you want to spend a lot of time perfecting an even pour, and monitoring pressure gauges, then get a manual. If you want something that is very close to the pod experience but cheaper and less wasteful in the long run, get a super automatic.

      • Do you recommend this or the Delonghi Dinimica. Dolce Gusto pod machine broke so looking to upgrade. Wife wants another pod machine but I'm hoping to convince her to upgrade

It looks like the Diminica has fewer 'recipes' but is (subjectively) better looking. It's not that different in size, but the max cup clearance is a little lower. They have the same size water tank but the Diminica has a slightly larger bean reservoir.
They probably have pretty similar internals. If I had the extra $$ I'd get the Diminica, to be honest just because it's miles better looking! It might be an easier sell because of that (will Brad Pitt on the advertising materials make a difference?! 😄).
If maths will help with your wife, I've spent $900 less on beans than I would have on pods over 5 years. So this Magnifica could pay for itself in savings over 5 years, where the Diminica will have to last an extra year. My Magnifica is a refurb unit and is 5 years old.
Unfortunately the warranty on new machines is only 2 years so you could end up significantly worse off if you get a unit that only lasts a few years.
The reason that I switched from pod to bean-to-cup is because I hated buying the pods SO MUCH and I always found the coffee thin and weak no matter what I bought. I tried refillable pods to cut the cost and waste but they defeated the purpose, which was to make decent coffee with minimal fuss. Based on my experience I would 100% buy a super automatic again but I'd never buy another pod machine.
          EDIT: https://www.kitchenware.com.au/delonghi-dinamica-ecam-automa… - refurb Dinimica
