www.amazon.com.au/AMD-Ryzen-7-5800X/dp/B0815XFSGK - Ryzen 5800X @ $380.32
www.amazon.com.au/promotion/psp/A4R68XV5FMLHQ - other eligible items @ 6% off

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X is an AM4 socket 8 core/16 thread CPU which runs at 3.8Ghz with 4.7GHz boost, 36MB cache and 105w draw. To some extent, it's reputation as a high performance thermal oven sees many preferring the 5700X (which runs marginally slower but much cooler), the 58003DX (worse mutli-thread performance but great for gamers or other single-threaders due to huge cache) and the 5900x or 5950x (superior multi-thread performance but expensive), but it occupies a healthy place in the Enthusiast-class middle ground and is a great value for money drop-in upgrade for many existing Zen, Zen+ or Zen2 owners or those looking for bang for buck Zen3 systems whilst early adopter pricing abates on the new AM5 platform.

Amazon US are currently running a "Buy 2, get 6% off" promo at www.amazon.com.au/promotion/psp/A2GQU4VR43P0HM, featuring a wide range of items, amongst them - the Ryzen 7 5800X - with a delivered price for a single unit of $380.32 after discount. To participate, you need to add one of the other eligible items, but even so, it's possible to land the 5800X plus one other trinket from $386.32 delivered in total. Whilst you can't sort the above list by price, you can you the filter at the bottom left of the page to only list items below $10, $20 or any other amount. The 5800X is also listed as eligible for the current AMD "Free Uncharted game promo" as shown as www.amd.com/en/gaming/ryzen-uncharted-bundle, but I can't personally verify so don't brand me with a flaming CPU if I'm wrong…

Cheapest eligible items (prices shown before 6% discount) I could find which didn't attract additional shipping charges currently include;
Paint defect remover for $6.37 - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00F7OR9QC.
French phrases for kids book $7.94 - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/0486803619
Botanical Affirmations Colouring Book $8.19 - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B089TRW7BZ
Pete the Cat book - $8.84 - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/0062675214
Command Universal Picture Hanger - $13.85 https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00404YRY2
Pentel EnerGel Alloy RT Gel Pen - $14.49 https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0026ZPWZA

There's hundreds of other items to choose from if you want something genuinely useful, rather than just something that will see you spend less overall after the 6% discount. The items listed above didn't attract any shipping fee for me, but beware that some other items not listed, do. Delivery for me to Sydney was shown as November 1.

As always with Amazon, it could be available for a long time or a little, and you may have to tweak the "Sold by" filter if doesn't default to "Sold By Amazon US" for you. Personally, I'm waiting for a deal on the slightly lesser 5700X, but I believe this is the first time the faster 5800X has ever been listed under $400, so hopefully it suits someone's needs. Just beware, you will need to purchase or repurpose your own CPU cooler. And for the RGB'ers amongst you - it's available in any colour you like, so long as it's ceramic grey…

  • Currently have a 3600, good upgrade?

    • If you play games at 1080p at very high framerates and desperately want a tiny bit more FPS, like 10%, this might manage that.

      But otherwise, generally, no.

      3600 is still solid.

Too soon for a really meaningful upgrade.

      • Yep I play at 1080p 144hz monitors

      • I researched many reviews and benchmarks, esp the difference between 3500 -> 5700x (since it was my intended upgrade path) and the FPS uptick on a well matched GPU averaged between 20-30% at 1080p-1440p. I would expect very similar upticks between a 3600 and 5800x, and plenty of upside in terms of resource loading, multi-tasking capacity and other improvements due to architecture enhancements such as increased cache and PCIE4.

But for me, the biggest compelling reason for upgrade, is the knowledge that future games and applications will invariably benefit from and make better usage of increased cores and Zen3 upgrades. As the last AM4 upgrade I’ll make, I want to ensure I’ll have a usable PC for many years to come.

Thank you sir, very informative response. I have a 6700 XT, would that classify as a well matched GPU?

          • @triggerr: Indeed it would.

As Stevelo says, a 5800X3D may be a better, albeit more expensive upgrade for you if gaming is your main pc usage. Like all other CPUs - including this one - it will of course drop in price with age and more advanced alternatives, but only you can say when the price/performance ratio is right for you. That said, I always find it curious when people say that they’ll wait for x amount of time or until a product drops by x amount of dollars. If you’re looking for an upgrade and it ticks your boxes, life is too short…

          Ah yes, future proofing.

Personally I don't recommend it. Over the decades I've paid attention to how rarely future proofing works out better than waiting until the upgrade actually makes a difference. By which time it's hundreds cheaper and/or twice the improvement.

          • @GandalfTheCheap: No future proofing - as I think I made clear in my subsequent comment above. Just trying to maximise the usable lifespan of components by purchasing at the right time and price in their lifecycle, and acknowledging that different people will have different needs.

It's certainly horses for courses. But as someone who isn't an avid FPS'er, the 8 years I got out of my i5-4670k using the same logic was money well spent in my use case.

I will wait for 5800x3d special, at least it is the best cpu for your m/b. Intel 13th gen 13600 is so strong in mid range cpu, I will expect same for 13400 when it launched, 5800x3d will have to drop price to stay competitive.

      • Great cpu for single-threaded gaming. But not everyone has the same use case.

        • +1

He mentioned fps 1080p 144hz, 5800x3d much better for gaming. He can skip amd 7000 series with 5800x3d

          • @stevelo: And if he only games at high resolutions and doesn’t browse at the same time, multitask or use his pc for productivity, I’d agree with you - if he can justify the 50% price increase.

But if he’s a content creator or does any encoding or anything that taxes multiple cores, he’d be spending more money for a worse outcome in many situations.

            • @UncleRico: I think it is a gaming pc as I read, if this is productivity + gaming pc, go straight to 13600k or 13600f or even higher. https://chipguider.com/?p=intel-core-i5-13600k-vs-amd-ryzen-…

              • @stevelo: He might struggle to drop one of them into his existing motherboard.

You've made it very clear that you're a fan of the 13600 - and I don't hink anyone is arguing that this latest generation intel processor is indeed a great performer. But it's not an upgrade option - it's a replacement for his existing platform and would come at considerably greater expense in terms of both the CPU and the new motherboard he'd need to purchase to operate it. Great for anyone looking for a brand new system, but not for an AM4 upgrade.

  • @UncleRico u said ur waiting for a sale on the 5700x right? Is this not on sale or am i mistaken?

    • Thanks for posting, but the 5700x has regularly been available at $369 and even $359 recently.

      • It got to $362 right now, just posted the deal. Go get it :)

  • Thanks just bought. What's a good value for money motherboard nowadays?

The price is even lower now @368.95
