IT'S BACK ON! Progear Hybrid Bicycle- $249 (RRP $800) Free Shipping (18.5" & 15" Frames)

570

Hi Folks,

I bought one of these ~18mths ago (15" frame) for my wife and paid $650 for it from the Bike Barn in Parramatta. At the time I did a lot of research and found that this bike, despite not having a big name brand had very good quality components throughout it. And it still sells at that store for $500 (on special).
http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/bicycles/progear/hybrid/cx-40…

So when I looked for a bike for myself I was amazed to find that the importer of these is clearing out 18.5" & 15" versions for $249 (with the option to make an offer so maybe even less). PLUS they've included nationwide free express post delivery!

Hybrids have fallen a tad out of focus over the past few years BUT for the social/weekend/commuter rider these are many classes above a fixie or a mountain bike made road friendly.

The main link is to the 18.5" version (which I bought (I'm 5'11) and it arrived in 3 days) - but they also have a 15" version —-*** EXACTLY SAME PRICE $249 ***—- (which is the one my wife got as she liked the black colouring, she's quite petite (5'3) so could be used by ladies easily).
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SHIMANO-24-SPEED-PROGEAR-HYBRID-B…

As stated we've had my wife's one for 18mths+ now and it's been faultless - the components on it are easily comparable to $500-$800 range. e.g the tyres on them (Kenda Eurotrek) sell for up to $60 each!
http://www.bikes.com.au/p/1217944/kenda-eurotrek-tyre-700c.h…

A lot of the cheaper bikes will have a brand name rear derailleur but then yucky parts in other areas novice buyers won't notice but these have very decent parts all the way through and the build quality is also very good for the price-range.

So if you're looking for a bike or open to upgrading from a clunker you'll really struggle to do better than these for anything less than double their price! As stated paid $650 and I felt it was a good buy back then!!!! So $249 delivered is sensational IMHO.

PS. They come '99% assembled' and average user can easily put together but some times you might need a shop to tune the gears etc - but great tutorials available for this online.

Good luck.

PS. ABN: 96 137 370 953, Lifespan Fitness is a division of Global Fitness & Leisure Pty Ltd

PPS. Deal back on….YAY! Buy fast before they remove it again! I'd BIN at $249 rather than making an offer, it could take too long and you risk it over saving a few dollars!

  • I first see this item with receipt this morning of my OzBargain daily newsletter, and like what is the case over and over again, the offer is already "expired"! This is a frustrating aspect of OzBargain newsletters.

    • +1

Just check the website directly and you won't miss out.

    • +1

The only true way to "win" on Ozbargain is to check it continuously throughout the day. That means leaving a tab on the browser open. Heck, I'f im on the toilet I will even go on my smart phone to keep afloat with the latest deals. The second part is to make a quick decision and buy with conviction ; indecisiveness and stalling is one sure way to miss out on good deals(like how I did with this bike deal, for example).

  • +1

update, just offered again of 250 and 251 , both automatically rejected so i think the seller has set a minimum price now…and since that's 3 offers made, i cannot offer again for 30days HAHA or i can only "buy it now".

    sad.

  • I had a Norco Kokanee with similar drivechain to this and loved it. Then some prick flogged it and I was left without a set of wheels. Glad I managed to grab one of these.

Should note that the tyres are Innova 700Cx35C, not Kendas as stated by the OP.

    • Sorry mate but you're wrong …..and so is the listing. Remember I just bought one of these - they are LISTED as Innova's but I can assure you they're Kenda Eurotrek's actually on the bike. :-)

      • Ah, cool. I did also check another bike website which said they were Innovas, I just assumed you'd gotten the Kendas because you'd bought your bike elsewhere.

  • Is this still a good deal at $369?

Also, I see you have to assemble it yourself. For someone like me with two left hands, is that difficult?
    Thanks for the advice everyone…

    • +3

As stated after quite a bit of looking around 18mths ago I felt that at $650 it was very good value and bought one for my wife (who oddly prefered the male version to the pastel coloured ladies ones).

So I'd have to say I do think it's very good value at $369 - but I'd have an issue on principle paying this and would want to speak to the seller and get their justification on why you cannot buy at the same price they've been ELATED to make any sales at ($249) since 17MAR12?

If you prefer to avoid the grief, make an offer above $249 but below $369 and take it from there.

I just checked Cell bikes and can't find anything thats close on value so it's still a good buy.

Putting it together is very easy but WORST case allow $50 or so of budget for a 'tune up/service' by a bike shop to get the front/rear derailleurs and brakes perfect - everything else is very simple.

      Cheers, Nick

PS. Man do all posters on OzB put in like this? ;-)

    • +5

Dude, don't buy it at this price as Nikko said. You don't want to encourage this unethical behavior by sellers. Your best bet is to hold off a week or two and the seller should revert the price back down to $249 after a dramatic spike in sales.

      • +1

Precisely. Supply & demand…cut off the demand & the supply price will drop again, it's simple Reaganomics! ;)

  • +3

DO NOT buy it at the current price. Seller is just being cheeky, do not justify it or encourage him to be so. I sent him an eBay message saying what he's done is unethical and I want the same $239 price. Do that and let his mailbox get full with same kind of messages instead of item sold e-mails :) He shall give up soon.

  • +1

I`m waiting too for the price to come back down and have sent a message too stating this :)

    .

  • I sent then a link to this page. See if they come and comment.

    • They already know about it. If you had read through the comments you would know this yourself…

      • Sorry, Alzheimers.

They replied, claiming pricing error (since 23-Feb-12)

        • +1

Pricing error, yet they accepted when people offered $239?

Just too bad I missed out too. Should've bought it when I had the chance. Good deal. Been looking to get a bike. If they dropped it to 249 again I'll definitely grab one!

        • +1

          Agree 100%.

I think someone up high in the organisation or their retailers (still stuck with stock and trying to sell them for between $400 and $800!!!) caused a stink.

So not a 'pricing error' as we would term it but more a policy change.

  • Thanks Nikko, since you know your stuff, any idea on the Reid Cycles? See reidcycles dot com dot au

Read some good stuff in some of the cycling forums about them…anyone have any experience?

Thanks - I will not buy then until the price drops to the original or I might just buy from Reid Cycles.

    • +1

No worries Scarface, ah not heard of them quick look over the site and they look ok for the money. I'd tend to trust what they say in the good cycling forums. That said if you've a good bricks and mortar vendor near you sometimes if you haggle hard you can get pretty close to the online prices plus they'll toss in things like a years unlimited services on your bike.

This is very valuable as if you pay for it separately they'll charge you a load for it and it's very important to setup and maintain the bike well or else it'll run badly and it's not the bikes fault…haha it's yours!

See how you go anyway - lots of bikes vendors have big sales on at present so deals to be had. Good luck.

  • +3

Damn them! I was about to pull the trigger the other day and by the time I got home to actually do it he decided to add $120 to the price, I'll go elsewhere now just out of principal even if I pay more for an equivalent bike and I will never shop there and my friends wont either, I'll make sure of it. Facebook has a big impact.

  • +5

Bloody hell - just had a HUGE post accidently deleted! Bloody data plan!! :-(

Ok I spent a few hours yesterday tuning up my and my wife's CX-400's. Apart from the obviously assembling of the bik (which is simple) almost all of them will require considerable tuning of the front/rear derailleurs, front/rear brakes and also adjusting to your height etc (seat height/position & headset angle) - if you're not mechanically minded or good with frustration it might be best to go to your local bike store for these - will cost maybe $50 or less. Haggle as it's not a full service, but don't tell them its on a new bike you bought online or they may well get the shytes and try and make you pay full bikkie.

It's very simple work for them and will take under 10mins for a junior staff member to do.

Alternatively and as new bikes need re-adjustment a month or so after their first setup, there are some excellent tuts on Youtube.

    I highly recommend these:
REAR derailleur (IMPOT: do this before the front derailleur!) - all this uploaders videos are excellent!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkzvfCaIbyQ

    FRONT derailleur
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngm6dr-1na0

Get some quality chain lube (don't use oil or WD40!) and buy a QUALITY bicycle lock - HONESTLY nothing less than $40! You will be sorry if you skimp on these! Kryptonite & Abus branded U-Lock's are excellent (yes they're expensive BUT yuo just saved heaps on your bike and they're WAAAAAAAY cheaper than a new bike!)

    Good luck folks. :-)

    • all well and good………for those of us who got the bike !!! still crying (and was crying over the w-end) about the dodgy move the seller's pulled.

  • Received mine at 2pm today.. just finished tweaking it, brakes needed adjustment. I'm quite impressed with the build quality. I might ride it to work tomorrow, weather permitting.

  • +2

Guys it is back at $249!!!!

forget it they added $30 for shipping now.

  • where can i get a decent helmet?

    • Define decent? All helmets sold in Australia should meet Australian standards.

When I bought my helmet I went for something that looks alright, fits my head comfortably and was MANUFACTURED in Australia. The cheapest places are department stores.

I'd be interested to hear Nikko response, if he's around.

      • i splurged out on a Giro Reverb from Amazon

      • Yes, my understanding is every bicycle helmet sold in Australia has to meet the Australian standards. So it's really down to comfort and aesthetics as to which one you choose.

I got a really good deal on a very swish lookingh 'Etto' branded one on Ebay a few yrs back - doubt they're still available as it was a clearout sale.

For most users the Kmart/BigW ones will be fine - they even have some nice looking ones now that won't embarrass the wearers….haha unlike the 'Rosebank stack hats' which came out when I was a kid! Ugh!!!!!

Haha I repeatedly risked massive cerebral trauma rather than the mocking of my peers! ;-)

    Hey guys,

There has been a mix-up with the pricing of the PROGEAR SHIMANO 24 SPEED HYBRID due to minor miscommunication between our eBay divisions.

Due to popular demand, the listing has returned to $249 + FREE DELIVERY NATIONWIDE .

We appreciate your interest in our products.

I have just sent you a final offer of $239, based on that's what you have been accepting only 2 days ago. I would like the same price to be honoured to me and all other Ozbargainers. It's a big community here and you could only benefit from keeping us happy :-) Thanks!

  • Re: lifespanaustralia
Just as I have sent you the reply above, you have declined my offer. This is not fair as you have been accepting the offers from $239 just 2 days ago as I said above. I will not buy it if I won't get the same price…. Thanks.

    • They have every right to reject offers or even let them time out.

I paid the full $249. By your logic I should apply for a $10 refund.

    • Back to $369 again?

    • Just be grateful the seller came back to earth, maybe you should to. $10 is a small sum to haggle over.

  • And I have every right to ask for the same deal that's given to others aye? Just because you skipped this doesn't mean I can't ask for the same price. By OB'ers logic I should ask for them to be fair to everyone.

    • Waaaa I want what he has waaaa. Don't get it, I am sure there are heaps of better bikes for $10 less out there.

      • Talk is cheap.

Feel free to back up the claim by posting up just one of these HEAPS of better bikes that are cheaper. We all look forward to your post. :-)

        • Lol that's my point.

        • +2

Sorry, didn't see you were being sarcastic. Haha help a brother out and toss a ;-) or :-P in. :-)

  • Gotta learn more about the OB spirit. Sigh.

  • +2

Guys, I HIGHLY recommend people who want these bikes use the BUY IT NOW option at $249 - its an amazing steal at this price and you're being very foolish (IMHO) to risk not getting it at all by making an offer to save maybe $10 (under 5%) if you're LUCKY!

Remember this deal was yanked with no notice or warning once and it could very easily happen again - hence I'd fight that urge to save a few bucks (literally!) and jump on this sensational deal while you can!

    You have been warned.

Ebay offers can take up to 48hrs to get a response - and you will be risking these selling out or the deal lapsing.

FWIW went for my first ride on my new bike yesterday - sensational! Looking forward to a serious jaunt this weekend.

You will not get a better buy than this on a bike - I'll bet my reputation (whats left of it) on that. :-)

    • My biggest question, what is the seat like? When I go to the gym my a$$ hurts so bad after 20 mins on any of the bikes there, real turn off for me.

      • +1

Look the seat is not bad - it has a suspension stem (so a 'shock absorber' in it) but you'll still feel like you've 'spent a night with Bubba' after the first few rides. ;-)

You're prolly best getting a decent pair of cycling shorts with the padded inserts - as you can spend BIG money on saddles and the improvements over this one (from a comfort perspective) are marginal. It's pretty good overall.

Haha seriously, who's buying a seat over the saddle on it? Thats like buying a car based upon the seats in it. ;-)

    • After offering $239 twice and getting declined, gave it a go the third time and received $245 counteroffer with a note saying that's the best their manager will approve. Accepted it. That's the OZBARGAIN spirit ;)

      • Ah……you'd be feeling a tad bit queezy if the offer had been yanked so you could save a grand sum of $4. Seriously, ya got to put a value on your time and also balance risk vs reward.

I wouldn't confuse the OzB spirit with reckless risk taking. Enjoy your bike, it's a cracker. :-)

        • Well look the main thing is, they were selling these bikes for $249 with a further $10 discount on an offer, but suddenly they got "clever", which I didn't like and tried to push it back to where it was as much as I can. There was nothing wrong with it, in the end I won (some of it). People go to OW for 5% price beat which is sometimes only $1-2 discount, this is no difference. I don't think they'd run out of bikes that soon anyway and between you and me (lol), I'd still buy it for $249 today even if they declined. But hey, so that everyone knows, their final price is $245 now.

ps. Gonna give you the credit for the post of course, thanks Nikko.

        • I hear you, glad you got them - I only stated the 'risk' side as a LOT of folks were very disappointed when they put offers in and the deal was pulled. Would hate to see this happen to anyone again.

Shame is a lot of those folks will still think this deal is over and not put another offer/buy it now - in again.

Hopefully the seller will send them a new offer - would be very easy almost guaranteed sales for them.

Again congrats with your buys, they're great bikes and thanks for the kind words. :-)

        • Nikko, can you fit a baby seat on these?

Also, I am 1.82m and my wife about the same. I want to buy two of these - go with 18.5" to be safe on both?

          Cheers

        • Let's hope everyone takes advantage of this good deal :)

One question I have is what tools I'd need for the assembly and adjustments you mentioned before. I have one of those 45 in 1 screwdriver sets
          (link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Precision-45-In-1-Electron-Screwdriv… )

I wonder if this would do?

          Thanks for your help.

        • +2

Its states on the box what you need but nah that set ain't going to cut it - haha its an electronics screwdriver set! No 2mm torx head screws on the bike. ;-)

I CBF'd itemising the tools but suffice to say there's nothing exotic needed.

Invest in a good specialist bicycle multi-tool, they're like a swiss army knife type thing but with all the attachments you could need riding a bike. ALWAYS take it with you when you go for a ride. Weighs little and will save you a LOT of grief.

Am sure they're on ebay in droves but sell for ~$20 in BigW/Kmart. Essential item every bike owner should have.

Oh and FWIW before you rush out riding it DOUBLE check everything (that means ever nut and bolt on it) - plus do all your preventative maintenance!!! e.g rust protection, proper bike lube etc etc.

Far better to do this up front than try and patch up in a few months time.

Oh and as I've said before buy a GOOD bicycle lock (minimum $50!). Most bikes are stolen from where they're stored, so always lock up at home.

          I'm done. ;-)

        • Sorry never saw your post. All adult bikes can have baby seat fitted IIRC.

At that height the 18.5" would be preferable, 15" could work - but the 18.5 is sold out now so maybe look at the flat bar road bike - 21" frame is fine (different style so equiv. to the CX-400 in smaller sizes).

  • Just went to order 2 and Tassie is not on the delivery list….bugger!

    • Bummer…..maybe message the seller as it could be an oversight on their behalf. They used Allied Express to ship it out to me and can't imagine TAS would cost anymore than WA and NT.

Don't ask, don't get. Good luck.

  • Thanks Rep…next time you have a special again, i suspect people will recommend Lifespan

Support OzBargain…it's the right thing to do!

  • 7 left in the 18.5".
More than 3 times as many offers in.
    Think quick!

    • I just don't get why people are SO DUMB as to make an offer so they can maybe save $5 - and now almost certainly a bunch of them will miss out. Thats a real brain fart and wake up call that you're taking the save a dollar mentality a tad far.

Sorry but no sympathy for anyone who falls into this category…..you'd have thought after the first time they'd have wised up, but nah. Charles Darwin is somewhere smiling. ;-)

      • +2

        Agreed.

There should also be an honourable mention category in the Darwin Awards, not only for those who narrowly cheat death; but also for those who narrowly cheat themselves out of a real bargain by being too stingy! ;)

        • It's almost like deep-down, subconsciously…they actually want a reason by the power of capitalism that will force them to miss out on this deal! e.g. spending too much $ online, impulse buy, ozb addiction etc.

    • 4 left, and best offer has been removed.

      • Best offer is still there.

Edit: The seller has ended it early, with 67 sold. There were still 3 bikes available.

        • Ah, OK. Couldn't see best offer on mobile site.

  • Ahhhhh omfg imraging here why why why omg…the 2 days I don't see this and it goes back down in price ! Absolute fail. I really really wanted one. Why did he pull the deal ! Freaking crying here

    • You could try asking if you can have one of the 3 left.

      • Yep messages the seller, I almost sounded like I was grovelling for a bike…since when does a customer have to grovel to a seller to buy something ?hahahaah

Edit- replied saying they are out of stock…

        • How tall are you?

For as stated I'd used my wife's 15" CX-400 very comfortably for many a ride - having had the two bikes I can assure you the cranks are the identical size and you you'll be fine with it after adjusting the headset & seat height. Very good compromise, pending your height.

Otherwise….why not get the flat bar road bike?
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SHIMANO-21-SPD-PROGEAR-FLAT-BAR-R…

Don't worry about the frame size as much - totally different angles etc means this is approx. the same as the 18.5" hybrid. If you're purely riding on hard surfaces this would actually be on many levels a superior choice, though it has a few cheaper components it's still excellent value and I don't think much better on offer that I'm aware of.

Honestly unless you're 180cm+ I can personally attest that the 15" frame is comfortable and fully capable of being ridden just as well as the 18.5". See how you go, shame to miss out altogether. :-)

        • I'm about 175cm, so I guess either size is good. Now that you mention it, I also wouldht mind a road bike since that's what Id mainly use it for. 250 seems like a good price to start off with for a first road bike, can always upgrade the parts Ey. Thanks a lot for the advice ! I will have a think about the road bike !

Also they said the original item is discontinued so no more deals like this for that bike.

        • Yes, I don't think you can miss either way. The CX-400 is the better bike, you'd definitely be fine on the 15" - it's not ideal size wise but as I've posted earlier for lower end bikes like these sizing isn't as important as more $$$ ones where a lot of components are sized commensurately.

It's just more flexible as the suspension fork, though not high end, is effective and can easily be turned on/off/adjusted whilst you're riding it. Which is handy.

You can also adjust the headset down so that it's effectively a flat bar…which is what I've done to our ones. More aggressive riding position rather than bolt upright.

All this said the blue flat bar will be ~3kg or so lighter and still has ~$500 bike components on it. You'll be happy with either one. :-)

        • I've messaged them and they said they can give me free shipping for the flat bar bike, what's the difference between the 21" and 23"? May look to purchase tonight !
Thanks for all the advice and help so far

        • The difference between the 21" and 23" is 2 inches of frame. ;-)

You'd be a 21", I can tell you this from having measured myself up for one when I was considering it. Should be a good fit for you.

As stated, due to the different style of frame you'd be fine with the 21" in that style or the 15" in the hybrid (which has a slanted frame).

          Happy to help. :-)

      • I'm wondering if they're keeping 3 of them as spares, in case some bikes are damaged or have faults.

  • .

    • 38 of the 15's left.

  • Pluck a duck, 18's sold out.. I assume for a tall guy like me (168 cm lol), that a 15 may be also do yeah?!
    Thanks!

    • Yes, absolutely. See Nikki's post a few above. I'm 5'7 so the 15" would be better for us.

      • As Wolf said, definitely fine for you (168cm). :-)

        • Thanks wolf & nikko, bought the 15".. now who wants a pristine hardly used hasa fixie at a fair price with a cateye speed/cadence sensor?!?
          :D

  • My bike arrived late today, 530pm. It's a very nice looking bike.

I've just put the majority of it together. It's all ready for tightening, air, tuning etc tomorrow.

I had a slight problem with the front wheel. The front wheel has 2 plastic plugs in the hollow axle for transport, and one of them was damaged and snapped off. Pain in the ass trying to get it out. Long story short I had to very carefully drill it out.

Can't wait to ride it tomorrow!

PS. Does anyone know what this is for? http://imgur.com/CTK2y

    • It's for the handle bars!

    • As Scythe said, that goes in the headset, it helps adjust/hold the angle that the handlebars are at. So in the centre of the heatset (part in between the frame and handebars) - on the underside of that you will screw that in the hold there (assuming yours fell out somehow?).

You can see from the angle guide on the side of the headset the angle you've got it set at. I like around 10 degrees. :-)

Be careful not to OVER tighten the headset parts and lube all screws before you put them in lest in a few yrs time when you adjust again they get stuck & break trying to get them out etc. :-)

  • Did any of you guys bother getting insurance with your order? It's an extra $15.

    • I didn't because I paid with PayPal which was enough should something go wrong during delivery.

      • Yup, that's what I figured. Probably just a tactic by the seller to try and scare people to get unnecessary insurance as an up-sale.

  • now that a few of you have gotten the bike, can anyone shed some light on the weight? is it close to 12 kg?

    • I don't have scales, but I reckon it's about 14kg.

      • i just got a fast response from them: it's about 12kg

  • +1

I think i'm going to have to get this serviced professionally.

The front wheel needs truing, and I can't seem to get gears tuned perfectly. Quite frustrating.

    • IMHO the best money you can spend on any bicycle is a professional service at least to kick off, if not regularly! :)

      • I took it to my local, independent, bike shop and they're going to true the front rim and tune the gears for $44. The downside is I have to wait 24 hours and I won't get to use it till the weekend.

For anyone who doesn't know.. "wheel truing" is "straightening" the rim so it doesn't wobble!

        • using the youtube links Nikko provided, I've managed to sort out the back gears but the front is more tricky….

Weird?! the wheel on my bike was dead straight, strange that your's wobbles….i'll have to check and recheck mine again :S

        • I used the links too, but couldn't get it perfect.

My back wheel is fine, was just my front. I didn't notice it till I had it upside down playing with the gears.

        • Seriously the front wheel needed truing?

If that was the case I'd have contacted the seller and requested a partial refund or replacement.

Sometimes folks think they need truing as they're not evenly put in on either side so it looks like it's warped but actually isn't.

Maybe it got whacked in transit, still not your fault, should have chased up seller.

        • Yeah it was pretty bad. A few posts up I mentioned I had some troubles with the front wheel. Fair to say it probably got whacked in transit, or manufactured poorly. I was starting to regret my online purchase of a bike at this point.

  • As you know I accepted their counter-offer for $245 the other day. Then I asked them some questions about delivery. I got their reply yesterday and just as I was going to pay for it they sent me a REQUEST TO CANCEL TRANSACTION from eBay, reason: "I ran out of stock." I declined this request and replied: "we have only talked about delivery options this morning, this is unacceptable. I will pay for the item now and expect you to supply my order. if you need to cancel, go cancel another newer order, not mine." And I paid for it straight away. Next thing I got was the request of contact number for delivery. LOL. Today my bike has been shipped…
I don't know if they wanted to sell it to someone who was going to pay $4 more :) After their attempt of putting the price up on eBay, now they do this. I wonder if anyone else had an attempt of their order being cancelled?
I am sure I will enjoy my nice bike with a great price, but I doubt if I will trade again with these cheeky people…

    • cheeky yes, but they also know when to give in, if you ask them - ie i got free shipping off them for the 21" road bike cos i messaged and said i wanted the previous deal but missed out, and asked for free shipping up front. got it. now hopefully the bike arrives and is able to be put together easily….

      • If we can't sort out the assembly we might as well ask Nikko to do it for us lol.

  • Three 18.5inch bikes are available! Get in quick ;)

  • I'm 188 cm, should i get the 21 or 23" ? cheers

  • Ah epic fail…
I was one of those idiots that made an offer originally on the 18.5", and didn't accept the counter-offer in time before it was retracted and the price put up.

When I saw the price had gone back down I rushed to buy, and only just realised I bought the 15" (which is no good to me…I'm 182cm).

Any thoughts? (/anyone want a brand new 15" bike :p)
