IT'S BACK ON! Progear Hybrid Bicycle- $249 (RRP $800) Free Shipping (18.5" & 15" Frames)

570

Hi Folks,

I bought one of these ~18mths ago (15" frame) for my wife and paid $650 for it from the Bike Barn in Parramatta. At the time I did a lot of research and found that this bike, despite not having a big name brand had very good quality components throughout it. And it still sells at that store for $500 (on special).
http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/bicycles/progear/hybrid/cx-40…

So when I looked for a bike for myself I was amazed to find that the importer of these is clearing out 18.5" & 15" versions for $249 (with the option to make an offer so maybe even less). PLUS they've included nationwide free express post delivery!

Hybrids have fallen a tad out of focus over the past few years BUT for the social/weekend/commuter rider these are many classes above a fixie or a mountain bike made road friendly.

The main link is to the 18.5" version (which I bought (I'm 5'11) and it arrived in 3 days) - but they also have a 15" version —-*** EXACTLY SAME PRICE $249 ***—- (which is the one my wife got as she liked the black colouring, she's quite petite (5'3) so could be used by ladies easily).

As stated we've had my wife's one for 18mths+ now and it's been faultless - the components on it are easily comparable to $500-$800 range. e.g the tyres on them (Kenda Eurotrek) sell for up to $60 each!

A lot of the cheaper bikes will have a brand name rear derailleur but then yucky parts in other areas novice buyers won't notice but these have very decent parts all the way through and the build quality is also very good for the price-range.

So if you're looking for a bike or open to upgrading from a clunker you'll really struggle to do better than these for anything less than double their price! As stated paid $650 and I felt it was a good buy back then!!!! So $249 delivered is sensational IMHO.

PS. They come '99% assembled' and average user can easily put together but some times you might need a shop to tune the gears etc - but great tutorials available for this online.

Good luck.

PPS. Deal back on….YAY! Buy fast before they remove it again! I'd BIN at $249 rather than making an offer, it could take too long and you risk it over saving a few dollars!

  • Allied express sure aint what it sounds. My bike went from melbourne to brisbane to sydney and is still there… Canberra aint that bad

    • hahha yeah i know. aus post would be faster, i usually get things on the monday or tuesday if its been sent out thursday or friday from interstate. "express"….the only fast thing was them sending an email. wait i haven't even been contacted by allied express !!!!!

      • I never received a phone call before mine was delivered. Don't expect a call.

        • got an sms saying it will be delivered tomorrow; nobody's gonna be home so i used their option of "have allied express deliver without getting a signature" - and only after i clicked submit did i realise that they CHARGE YOU 10$ EXTRA TO DO THAT. it's so freaking ridiculous.

  • Ditto, I received no phone call either. I'm detecting a pattern! :-)

  • Nikko, great stuff with the post and the knowledge and updates.

Do you know if the frame can take disc brakes. Was initially looking for a hybrid with disc brakes, but this was too good to pass up.

    • Thanks Tonetoro, appreciate the kind words.

I've no idea if the frame can take disc brakes, IIRC most frames can so best to consult the disc kit on to it's requirements.

THAT SAID from what I've read linear brakes are considered superior to disc brakes for the vast majority of bikes under $1000.

You'll find a lot of cheap disc brake systems and for the weight they add and their lowish quality I'd repeatedly heard traditional braking systems offered as superior options.

I'd DYOR on it but perhaps if you're wanting superior braking look first at upgrading the standard brake pads - as this will be super simple and very cost effective. Adding disc brakes will be pricey, require significant work and also add quite a bit of weight.

There is a reason why you rarely see disc brakes on hybrid/commuter bikes…but as I said please DYOR. Best of luck. Cheers, Nick :-)

PS. IMHO disc braking systems are a little like dual suspension systems on lower end MTB's. They're there not because they IMPROVE the bike but rather because average consumer PERCEIVE them as something they should/need to have - and so whilst superior options would be available cheaper these sell well as folks feel they just have to have a dual suspension, disc braked bike to ride up to the shops and back.

At a certain price point and with specific needs disc brakes definitely have their place but on this bike and what it's likely to be used for I'd be very surprised if the current system didn't vastly out perform entry level add on disc braking systems. :-)

Yeah, Nikko, kudos. Being a serious procrastinator I missed out on the 18.5' unit. Read your advice and ordered 2, what an awesome deal. Thanks 4 sharing.

    • Hope you bought a $5 bike lift to store it!

    • Thanks for the kind words, glad to hear it worked out well for you. Cheers, Nick :-)

Took your advice nikko and got myself a 21" road bike (being 182 cm, couldn't get the 15" hybrid) which is yet to be assembled. They didn't want to waive the shipping cost on it at all. So I offered them $220. They counter offered $239 which I declined and they accepted my original offer.
Thanks Nikko, you are a champion.

    • Happy to have helped - glad to hear you stuck to your guns and got a good deal on it. Thumbs up to you.

      Cheers, Nick

  • Has anyone bought this bike? Any thoughts on product/delivery? eBay says 47 have been sold… someone post an update please! Thanks…

    • Many bought it since this post - check the sale dates. Only the 15" frame left.
Delivery was slow to Regional NSW, about a week.

      • Thanks for the update, just placed the order… Am a bit unclear about this - what does the 15" frame refer to? (all sniggering aside)

  • Nikko, since you sound like you know quite a bit about bikes. Just wondering if you could give some advice.

I'm looking for a bike for riding on concrete cycleways and roads for a bit of exercise. I'm 180cm. Noting that the CX-400 18.5" is sold out and guessing 15" is probably too small for me, I see there is a Progear Flat Bar 19" and 21", and also a CX-300 21" for $199 + $20 delivery. Which of the 3 is best value do you think? Thanks!

    • Replied to your msg. FWIW for others I said to go the nice looking grey flat bar at $199 + del. Will ride better on hard surfaces than the Cx-300 (which I'm not a huge fan of, BIG drop down in specs from the 400!).

Gawd I've gotten soooooo many msgs asking for advice. Sorry to the sender but I got the oddest one today asking me to take a photo of me riding the bike, with the thought process being that would show how someone my height was suitable for it. :-/

Not really very logical for a bunch of reasons and hey I'll reply to msgs but taking photos and posting them up is a bridge too far. :-P

If anyone ever has doubts on frame size for them get to a bricks and mortar retailer. You might even end up buying from them. :-)

  • I had a missed called from them last week, called up by 1pm today, bike was delivered by 4 today.. so no complaints.. now just gotta put the thing together.. two left feet, two left hands! ;-)

    • haha maybe with all the bikes sold we should have a "An assemble TA bike day?" at some park.. byo beverage & Tools! :D (Yes I am looking forward in tuning the gears, and truing the wheels!)

  • Would anyone recommend this bike (See link below) for me ? I'm 173cm tall and would prefer to stay withing the $200-300 range.

  • Thanks Nikko. I bought the 15" one for $230.

    ***************** WARNING *******************

If you or someone you know has bought one of these Progear bikes PLEASE make sure you read this thread:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78142#comment-999490

The makers of the bike have incorrectly fitted the WRONG (and NOT the promised item) front derailleur and as such your are almost certain to experience problems with your gears & this could even lead to premature failure of the bike or even an accident!

The vendor has admitted fault but HAS REFUSED to tell people about this - hence I'm trying to let as many people know as possible.

I have two of these bikes and BOTH have this problem - it affects ATLEAST CX-400 models but maybe others from Progear's range going back several years.

SO PLEASE, read the above thread, check your bike and act accordingly……..please spread the word and place pressure on the vendor to do the right thing and not cover up this breach of their legal obligations!

    Thank you,

    Nikko :-)

Perhaps put a brief warning, with a ref to your forum post, within the deal statement if you can…easy to miss this comment for the uninitiated.

      • These were my thoughts too when I asked for this to be unlocked but this part of the post is locked. :-/
