    MATE Electric Bike $2999

    Nah mate…

  • What is the rider weight capacity of this bike?

    • For which colour ?

  • +5

I can buy a proper motorbike for that price…

    • New one ?

      • Yeah. Have a look at cfmoto or braaap. Their bikes are very cheap

    • -1

exactly just DIY - im putting one together now. so cheap to make with higher quality parts. Why bother with these rip offs. These are just bicycles damnit

      • +1

Can you elaborate how to do this? Tia

        • +11

Certainly - I have done a lot of research on this. Happy to share

          $270* - 1000W 48v rear hub motor https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/132103030688
          $350* - 48v 13Ah bottle mount battery https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195230883897
$100 - Kmart special solid steel frame bike https://www.kmart.com.au/product/74cm-everest-mountain-bike-…

          Total
$720 for a 1000w rear hub monster that rips most things. Subsitute the bike for something nicer or use the one in your garage - just make sure its a 26"
Also - for $340 more you can upgrade from rear hub to bafang mid drive that will be even more efficient. Mine just arrived!

            @ChatCPT: $5 for 250W compliance stickers too.

            • @timtam-slam: haha - The bafang I got comes with the stickers. Had a good laugh when I heard about this. Even the suppliers onto it

          • @ChatCPT: Thanks for that. It looks abit intimidating putting one together. Is there a place that would help one put this together? Obviously would love to learn to do it with guiding hands.

          • +2

@ChatCPT: $100 kmart bike, lol. This probaby isn't in the 'higher quality parts' category! the bike will ride like a wet noodle (weak front wheel, flexy suspension ) and braking will be interesting, if not straight-up dangerous to say the least!

            • +3

@buckerooni: agree - hence the "Subsitute the bike for something nicer " just added that because the cheap ebikes have kmart quality too

Personally - Im waiting for a deal like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/709649
10sp single gear hydraulic mtb sale for $400 - so add $300 to budget

              Total parts = $1,020

Equal to a $2,000 ebike from the shops for half the price!

I only got into bikes a week ago so happy to be proven otherwise - please show me a $2,000 ebike with better specs!
or the lowest price for a similarly specced ebike

              • @ChatCPT: sounds like a better approach, disc brakes front and rear for sure!

      • Same here. Just put a 500w front hub 700c kit onto my carbon bike. Cruises at 40km/h easily. Top speed without pedalling is around 45km/h. Love it.

        • 500W on carbon forks?!

          • @bargaino: Not many people know this or have but carbon forks and frames are much stronger than aluminium.

            • @SeanConnery: Aluminium dropouts can bend or crack under the torque of a large motor. More likely on a road bike than MTB. Don't carbon forks use aluminium dropouts?
              Not such a problem with a through-axle, I expect?

          • +1

@bargaino: +1 i heard its risky man. the torque on on the forks dont damage your expensive carbon bike with a hub motor!
if you got $ for a carbon bike - try a mid drive or get a cheaper bike for the hub motor

You could buy 3,528 125g cans of corn kernels, which would be an equally ridiculous point of comparison.

      • +1

corn kernels are great. I like Golden Circle or Aldi's. Different in flavour. Golden Circle is sweeter and crunchier, while Aldi's is a kind of salted brine, so saltier and maybe more flavoursome.

    25km/hr

    Zzzzzzzz

    • +3

That's a legal requirement for riding on public roads… Otherwise it would need to be registered as a motor vehicle.

very light on details about the components - doesn't even tell you it's a folding bike - instead, craps on about suspension but look at those tiny forks. i know from having a folding bike with "suspension", they don't do anything.
    looks like a 6 speed?
no pics of the control panel.
    no info on wheel size.

  • +1

Sleek and fast you say ? With those 20" fat tyres ? lol.
And you'd literally get more "suspension" from the tyres than that tiny shock.
I'm sorry but for $3000 on sale you're having yourself on. Maybe you could get away with $1500, citing a larger battery and that it's somehow otherwise more premium than alternative folding ebikes that are available under $1000…

  • +1

I can land a 8000watt "stealth" bomber ebike from alibaba for less. Pun intended

That price is a joke. JB sells similar bike under the Fiido brand for $1600.

You can also buy a similar bike (Kristall RX20), but a 750w version for $1800 from a shop called E-Ozzie here in Melbourne.

    • also at Costco

  • Any advice for someone looking for a non DIY ebike to ride at the park/on bike lanes with my daughter?

    Besides avoiding "deals" like this

    • 99bikes > Ebikes > sort by price lowest

  • What size are the wheels? Looks like a bike for toddlers.

Oh, 20", according to earlier post.

My first bike, age 6, was a 20 incher.

  • What a rip!
    250W single motor…
You can get 3kW of motor for that price with a larger battery..

    • This is an e-bike.
If you want an unlicensed motorcycle, you can do a lot better for $3k in gumtree. 250cc will get you up to 30kW.

  • +1

I'm guessing it should say 17 Ah battery, not 17 A battery?

    • Yes lol
And the should probably specify the voltage too lol. 1.5V? 😅

    • No, it should say the Wh. How stupid is it to quote Ah without saying at what voltage?

  • This review mentions it being sold by Smartmotion in Australia a year and a half ago for $2199.
    https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/the-mate-x-ebike-raising-the-ba…

A similar bike you could compare it to would be the ET-Cycle F720 (720Wh) for $2,199 or the ET-Cycle F1000 (1000Wh) for $2,899. Both of these bikes are heavier though: 34kg vs 29kg. The battery on the MATE X is 816Wh.

  • I ended up buying one of these second hand for $900 with 600km on it and haven't been disappointed.

However, at $3k, you'd be an idiot to buy one new. There are much better offerings at a cheaper price with double and even triple the power in the rear hub motor.

I did see one for about $1700 brand new that was essentially the same as mine, just with a bigger motor but slightly smaller battery.

If anyone's got questions about these or their clones, I'm happy to try to answer them.
