What Does It Mean if Bank Transaction Disappears

Bought some stuff online and saw the charge in my debit account. A week later it’s disappeared and my order says still packing. I assume they ran out of stock and aren’t gonna process. Next day it’s arrived (though missing 2/7 items).

Am I still gonna get charged for this purchase?

  • Am I still gonna get charged for this purchase

    Probably when they ship it.

    • As in when the remaining stuff gets sent? Still don’t understand why the transactions disappeared unless it’s been cancelled

  • +4

Some online store systems will automatically raise a charge to the buyers account to put a hold on the funds. This is not the final charge which can vary when they physically process the transaction.
The temporary hold typically has a life span of 7 days. It will either be replaced by the physical charge, or automatically expire and be removed from the credit card.

    • This. It was a pre-authorisation which lapsed.

  • Had a similar weird experience myself recently with an online transaction with New Balance.

Paid for stuff online, got the usual 'pending' transaction for it. NB were supposedly in process of moving warehouse and warned of delays (OK, cool). But then the pending transaction just disappeared (not into the completed transactions). They then slowly sent my order in 3 separate parcels over about a month or so.

Once the final one was sent, about a day later I noticed on my transactions for that current month [when I went into the 'by month' view, not the one automatically shown on logon], the original transaction appeared as in the completed list with those from the current month (ie in the billing month full of September and October transactions, there was my NB order with a date from August). It never actually reappeared in my list of transactions at any time though which I found odd and have never experienced before. I think even my credit limit was not affected by the purchase amount over that time up until the final parcel was sent.

I was actually only following it closely because I had an AMEX credit associated with the transaction, which I 'missed' by virtue of the transaction disappearing. Thankfully when the transaction mysteriously reappeared so too did the AMEX credit.

    • Ditto

    • Yep this was from that NB deal the other week. So I guess I’ll get the charge when the rest of the items arrive. Hopefully also my cba cash back
