    • love this colourway!

Probably a dumb question - but does anyone actually use the chronograph dials? I still dont understand the point

    • +3

Just like the e6b interface. No one actually uses it. It’s the look. 😂

    • +4

Yeah, it's more for looks. I used to like them, but now prefer cleaner designs, i.e. no sub dials.

    Hi
I am new into watches is what a good watch would cost. I’ve always had some cheap 50 dollar watch that done the job but lately I’ve been very interested in one of these and wondering what distinguishes my cheap watch to this one

    • +2

It's a good question. They effectively all do the same thing albeit a few seconds in time difference at the end of the day.

I guess it's about willing to pay something of higher quality which would probably last a lifetime.

wondering what distinguishes my cheap watch to this one

To a certain extent: branding, build quality, movement and design.
In all honestly, once you get past the basic g-shock price point (~$50 to $100), watches become closer to jewelries than tools and thus cost justification should account for that.

    • +1

Do you like this one or the old one? I guess that’s what distinguishes the 2.

    • In the age of mobile phones a watch isn't really to tell time. It's an accessory and for a niche group of people a massive addiction - so you can decide your use case.

      • +4

I beg to differ. I bought a nice watch purely to break the habit of pulling out my phone whenever I wanted to check the time. I agree that above a certain price point it comes down to mostly aesthetics, although there are certain brands (notably Swiss) that could be arguably more accurate - there have been flame wars ignited over that very topic.

        • +2

yeah, rude in meetings with clients to look at phone, like i have better places to be , or other more important clients, glance at watch on wrist nobody notices ….

          • +1

@garage sale: Actually, glancing at a watch is still rude but definately easier to get away with. May be it's just old fogie talk, but before mobile phones, what do you think people were looking at during a meeting? heh.

            • +1

@mit: Fair point. I get away with it by fiddling with the watch like I'm readjusting it and scratching my wrist, which gives me enough of a glance to determine the time.

      • if your hands are dirty, for example, you don't necessarily want to reach into your pocket to check out the time.

    • +1

Its more of an appreciation piece, the details, movement, and of course brand determines the cost.

    • You need to get a cheap Aliexpress Chinese watch & compare it to Seiko, Casio, Citizen, or Swiss brands.

I have a couple of Aliexpress watches I never wear, because they have problems. The bands feel awkward & face design is odd.

All my name brand watches are working after 10 years. You can see the fine detail in design, how it feels "balanced", how all the bits work together.

Seiko has been designing watches for 70+ years and they just get things right.

i'm curious what this $50 watch is. pics please?

    • A lot of things (though you don't need to spend $600 - all of the below features can be found in the $200-300 range with some careful choice).

Very cheap watches are usually made of brass, with an electroplating of chrome over the top. This eventually wears off, and you also can't really polish them. Better watches are solid stainless steel, so the case itself will last a lifetime.

Cheap watches with metal bracelets use thin sheet steel, which is folded into shape. This can look just fine (the better ones are well polished which hides the seams), but they feel 'hollow' (because they are). Better watches use solid steel links, and often the clasps are nicely machined too.

Nicer watches also usually have synthetic sapphire instead of glass covering the dial, which is extremely scratch resistant (diamond and a select few other minerals can scratch it. A steel knife can't mark it.)

More expensive watches also generally have more detailed dials, better polishing, better glow-in-the dark paint on the hands etc.

When it comes to the movement (the bit inside that makes it run), cheaper watches almost all use simple, plastic, battery powered quartz movements. These work just fine (and are super accurate), but they're pretty boring mass-produced items.

Better watches sometimes use similar quartz movements, but often add additional improvements (like solar power, or calendar features which keep track of the month so that you don't need to adjust the date).

Mechanical (spring powered) movements are more common in expensive watches, and these are desirable due to their traditional nature, their all-metal construction, and the craftsmanship that goes into the high-end ones. Expensive watches often have loads of decoration on the movement, which serves no practical purpose but helps the watch function as an item of jewellery. They aren't as accurate as quartz, however.

The white version is a beauty but oos and not on sale.

    • I've been waiting so long for the black and white "panda" style to come on special.

I just know it'll be on sale when I'm broke.

  • is 39mm on the small side?

  • +1

neat. reminds me of a Rolex Daytona watch

  • +1

Very tidy Omega Speedmaster clone.Seiko quality too.Good buying IMHO.

Anyone have experience with returns for a refund with Starbuy? Is it a pretty smooth process, so long as you've only tried the watch on?

      • I had already read the policy, was looking for people with actual experience doing it.

    • +1

In short, yes it's a smooth process . just remember to not remove any tags and/or plastic stickers and ask them for a return authorisation number. Also you will have to pay for return shipping for change of mind returns.

  • +4

As someone who owns an Omega Speedmaster that I bought 47 years ago, I would grab a white dial SSC813P if offered at this price.

Starbuy, send me an offer I can't refuse and I will make another purchase from you.

    • +3

Hi there. None in stock. We have a huge quantity on back order and we are lucky to get 5 a month!

      • You could make 5 people very happy with a $609.00 SSC813P…

      • same for me, would love the white dial at this price ……

      • My last birthday present from the family was a Seiko mod watch of choice which I have not yet used.. Only 2mod styles that interest me being Speedmaster or a Datejust. A SSC813P would save me the hassle of a modded watch. Let me know when you have stock.

      • +1

I'd be happy to do a pre-order on a panda at this price and wait however long it takes. Would save me from googling the watch everyday

    • that SSC813P is perfect. Know anyone who customizes Seikos?

    • Got mine at $740~ on Ebay Japan seller, consider the demand for white dial and it being JDM I'd say it's a decent deal.

    • +2

Agreed, my money is ready and waiting for the SSC813P. Just waiting for the price to drop

    • Thanks. I'm friends with Scott in Canada. A bit far though eh? https://komoworks.com/pages/watch-modification-services

      • +1

George is on there. He's in Sydney. Number 1 on the list.

        • +1

Yep I have one of George's mods it's beautiful. I bought it 2nd hand. Skx case green dial. Black insert.

  • @Star Jewels mate why have you changed the price after we placed the order :(

    • +2

Sorry but that was done for a specific customer who was owed $6. Please message us directly on [email protected] when you place your next order and we will adjust that in there for you. The gentleman was not able to use the coupon code so accounts lowered the price for him. Thanks

  • don't need it….
    bought one :(

  • The Seiko speedtimer panda I found at Bevilles website for $840 and good thing is I can get strap adjusted at any shop.

I presume these are the 2021 models as Seiko recently released the 2022 Seiko speedtimer range.

  • missed out on 817 and just hoping it would come back at same price again :(

  • -1

This is obviously a knock off Speedmaster right? Just get a moonswatch.

    • No it's not, one is disposable the other one is not , I'll leave it to you to decide which is which 😊

  • Dumb q but how can you tell if its mechanical or quartz? It doesn't' seem to say on starbuy

    • It’s listed in specifications on the site:

This particular one is solar quartz:

      Battery type: Solar
      Watch movement: Solar V192
