What's their refund policy in case of another COVID outbreak or emergency? Mainland China still has a zero COVID policy. There's a chance they might close Hong Kong too down the track.
By the way, any idea when the mainland Chinese airlines will start flying Sydney to Europe again?

  • Weirdly the Cathay Pacific website has the same/similar date flights from Sydney for between $10,000-$15,000 economy, never seen that before.

  • how does this interact with Cathay Pacific’s free rebooking until 31 December 2022?

Beware of the APPALLING service that Cathay offers. I bought a flight to Milan for Christmas few months ago, passing through Hong Kong. Without telling me, they now decided to move the flight to Hong Kong one day after (randomly found out when checking my booking) so that I arrive in Hong Kong 7 hours after the flight to Milan has departed. WTF??

Called them to resolve, asked to move my first flight to 1 day BEFORE, not 1 day after (!!!), so I could just get a hotel, wait a day and fly to Milan but they say they can't do that because I purchased an interconnecting flight, so if I flew 1 day before there's too much separation between the flights and they would not be classified as interconnecting flights anymore.

They said the only options are, 1) refund 2) fly to Hong Kong, wait time, flight to Singapore, wait 12 hours, then flight to Milan.
Refund is not an option as I have to be in Milan on those days (sick mum, likely my last Christmas with her) and buying another flight will cost me no less than $4k, which is ridiculous, because if I bought a flight with another company at first, I'd have spent less than $3k.
Been battling to get the Singapore 2-stops flight, calling many times, they finally got me the Singapore one but still don't have the Hong Kong to Singapore leg!!! How am I supposed to be in Singapore??

This was (and is still being) the worst experience of my life with an airline company (worse than Jetstar!) I will not fly with them again and will campaign against them forever.

That is pretty appalling service indeed. Hope you manage to find a reasonable solution soon. Apart from this, their inflight service (before COVID) is good however I’ve found their planes (interior) to be quite old and tired.

        pretty much lol

  • How would the bookings work - it still sends you tk another 3rd party eg gotogate, my trip.com

Have people had experience those other places?

Just book direct, saves you the headache of dealing with a middleman.

      • Doesn't look like the sale applies direct tho! 😢

        • Use Skyscanner and then click on book via airline website.

Keep in mind the Aus govt currently says this about transiting through Hong Kong International Airport: While in transit, you'll be subject to screening measures, including temperature checks. If you test positive for COVID-19 while in transit, you may be transferred to a designated isolation facility.

Yikes. Am transiting through HK in august next year. Only on the way home though thankfully. Still wish I could’ve afforded not to fly through HK though.

    I've flown Cathay twice.

First time, I was transferring in HK. When I arrived in HK they told me I had missed my connecting flight. However I ran to my gate and it hadn't boarded yet. They then refused my boarding because they'd already bumped me onto the next flight.

Second time, there was mechanical issues juat after leaving HK. They returned to land and then the next flight was schedule for 8 hours later. It was around 1am and they said that they couldn't book a hotel room because "all hotel rooms in Hong Kong are fully booked" lol. Missed the first day of my holiday.

Both times received no compensation or even a satisfactory explanation. I'll never fly with them again, regardless of the 'bargain'.

Check travel restriction and Covid bureaucracy by destination here. There isn’t any for my destination atm, hopefully it stays that way
