Warranty question on Whirlpool oven

The glass door of our oven recently shattered. It is a Whirlpool branded oven bought July 2019 (AKZ97820IXAUS) from the Good Guys (courtesy of a post on OzBargain - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/468183). It is no longer sold by the Good Guys. I don't have a record of what the warranty was advertised as back then.

I have contacted Whirlpool direct as the oven is still advertised online on their site with a 5 year warranty (https://www.whirlpool.com.au/collections/ovens/products/whir…).

However they are saying Good Guys only had a 2 year warranty.

I would have thought it shouldn't matter whatever the warranty Good Guys claimed, and if I am dealing with the manufacturer they should honour their advertised warranty. I guess it's possible they only offered a 2 year warranty when I purchased it, but I have no way of knowing that.

Is this something I can fight Whirlpool on to get them to honour the current advertised 5 year warranty?

Could threaten Whirlpool with ACL, that if they warrant it for 5 years now they must believe it'll last that long, etc etc

Will require a bit of Karen-ing though

Indicates that your Good Guys oven has only 2 years.
And also that this is indeed a problem for this oven.

Definitely worth pursuing even if it's out of Warranty, provided you can show that the cause is likely not a maintenance or lack of care issue.

The door should not shatter. If they do not come to the party then ask them if there was a recall due to the danger of the door injuring a person or worse? If they say no then say that you will be making a formal complaint to the department of XYZ in your State (you need to lookup which one it is) as this is a very dangerous issue.

    • These doors do shatter quit often , you may not hear about . Personally think you should get over it and buy the oven glass , either eBay or secondary seller

you should get over it and buy the oven glass

Why get over it? It’s unacceptable product quality, other manufacturers don’t have the same issue so why should we accept poor quality products and foot the bill when it breaks? It’s whirlpool’s job to pay not the customer.

So you are okay with the glass door shattering and maiming or injuring someone or killing them?

Reminds me of the Takata air bag issue and recall.

LOL @ killing someone… its safety glass, it shatters into 1000 pieces and falls on the ground.

Sadly this happens with glass from time to time. Ovens more so due to the heating/cooling cycles.

OP should go WP for a replacement glass though.

@JimmyF: I have shattered safety glass in the past and it can cut due to the effective explosion that occurs that propels that glass.
I have also shattered safety glass that has has only spread about 30cm.

So which one have you seen occur on an oven?

The manufacturers warranty means jack when you are covered by Australian Consumer Law. I'd suggest you do some reading on your rights under ACL as you would expect a quality product such as Whirpool to last more than 3 years before the door glass explodes (probably due to an impurity in the glass).

Thanks for the comments - yeah I will take it further with Whirlpool mentioning ACL. I have just tried lodging a claim via Good Guys as well just to see what they say in case I get lucky. I expect the repair cost to be at least $250-$350 which was basically what the Oven cost (but it was a great deal), so I definitely don't want to roll over and pay it without a fight.

What I was unclear on was whether products can have different manufacturer warranties if sold through different retailers. It doesn't make sense to me for that to be the case. If not, then the Whirlpool representative's recent email is irrelevant (that I only had a 2 year warranty because it was bought through the Good Guys) and gives me ground to dispute them.
