Can't Get Free to Air Channels since Storm Hit

Hi all,

I have a Fetch-box that is connected to my TV antenna and have tried searching for channels, yet nothing comes up. The Foxtel channels that come in packages are working, and my home internet works.

I have also tried on 3 other separate TV's which are connected to my antenna and no channels come up on them either.

FYI, we already had our antenna replaced a couple of months ago, where it worked for a couple of weeks and then now it's broken again since the recent Sydney flooding.

Is there a chance that the recent storms have messed with it and continue to do so, or would it be another factor?

Seems likely. Have you got a ladder or drone to check it out?

    • I would have to get someone out to have a look, don't really trust myself doing it, but it would make sense if the antenna was the culprit.

      • Fixing it one thing but depending on what your roof looks like and where the antenna is it wouldn't be too hard to just walk up the ladder do a visual inspection of the antenna for damage.

Have a look at other antennas, and see if yours is pointing in the same direction (depending on the type.
In the meantime, maybe start to use the channels streaming service like iview, 9now, 7plus, sbs on demand, 10 play if your TV supports it (or Fetch???- Sorry I've not used one).
Maybe invest in a Google Chromecast TV thingy?

That indicates physical damage to the antenna, meaning you'll need to replace it. You could try getting some cheap indoor replacement from Jaycar or eBay as a stop-gap solution.

or the coax connection just got loose.

  • Do you have any of these installed in your house? https://www.jaycar.com.au/kingray-17-5v-ac-100ma-power-suppl…

    You might need that

    • What does that do exactly?

Power injector for masthead amplifiers. If you have a masthead amplifier, and the power injector has blown, you will get the symptoms you described.

If you have one (or similar) in the house, maybe it's blown and defective. Trace the Antenna line. It might be in the Ceiling, or under house.

  • TV signal between the antenna and the TV is broken/stuffed.

Based on responses above from OP it is best that OP calls an antenna company to fix it.

  • Bahhhh who watches free-to-air TV, unless you're watching sports. The TV companies streaming apps do the job don't they?

    • Op does.

There's two good and likely suggestions in the postings above.

The first is that its something really simple, like the antenna being knocked around to pointing in the wrong direction, or a connector coming loose.

The second is that the OP has a masthead amplifier, and it has ceased working. It is plausible they do have one because they have a number of devices connected to one antenna. Often the signal from one antenna isn't enough to drive multiple devices, so a masthead amplifier is installed. And when that stops working none of devices connected gets enough signal to lock onto a digital signal. Its failure to work could be because the amplifier has failed, or because its not getting volts from its power supply. The power supply is the easiest thing to check first.

If the OP stands on a ladder and can't see anything obviously wrong with the antenna and the cable down from it, its probably the masthead amplifier.

  • Can you remove the Fetch TV box and plug the antenna straight into the TV and see if you can view the free-to-air channels that way? If you can, then the Fetch TV box is likely to be faulty.
