Is It Possible to Return a Line Trimmer to Bunnings for a Stronger and More Expensive Model?

A genuine question.

We bought a Ryobi line trimmer (the "base" model $119) a week ago and tried twice. I thought this was the only model that can be used as an edger (I am a noob). Later after watching some YouTube, I realise basically any trimmer can be used as an edge trmmer if the user is not too picky.

I wanted to buy a more expensive Ryobi model ($249 iirc). I am wondering if it is possible to go back to Bunnings with a used trimmer and ask for upgrading it to a more expensive model.

    I'm guessing no.

Sell your smaller trimmer on a local marketplace, cop the loss on the chin, and purchase the larger model.

Edging (not that sort jv) with a line trimmer can take a bit of technique trial and error.

This post is so incredibly FUNNY

      Is OP serious?

Return a used item because they changed thier mind???

And what is Bunnings supposted to do with the used trimmer?
Put it up for sale on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace?

No actually that is what OP should do.
There you go - Job done!

We need to consider the flip side, perhaps the Ryobi is not fit for purpose, not strong enough or even perhaps defective…. not running on all cylinders? The OP has not given enough detail as to why the Ryobi is not not performing as expected?

        • +1

how many cylinders do you think a cheap line trimmer has?

        • It was a battery one. I have found these are mostly useless other than for minor trimming of edges

          Here is the item

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-25cm-30cm-cordless…

It only has a 1.6mm line. Says it all!

But thats what you get when you buy the cheapest line trimmer on the shelf

  • +12

The only good line trimmers Bunnings sell are the Honda UMK425 and the Echo, both in straight shaft. Those cheapies are just toys. These are built to last and got plenty of power.

You can try taking it back and saying you are unhappy with its performance and want to swap for a better model. Usually they are pretty accomodating in these circumstances.

    • +2

Yeah, the Echo still going strong and starting easy 5 years after purchase here!

      • curved or straight shaft?

        • +1

Always straight! The curve always adds extra break points :/

    • +9

Not everyone needs a petrol powered trimmer. If you’ve not got a little lawn and keep it tidy, battery is fine. Ryobi is OK for that.

  • +5

I'd try it if I were me.

  • +64

I find as long as your open and honest, and fully disclose that the device is used but in perfect working order, they will be more than happy to assist you by asking you politely to leave the store.

    • +7

Lol. You had me in the first half.

    • +1

      lol

  • -4

It's 'defective' isn't it? Fault It stops intermittently after a few minutes, and won't start back up for @ 5 minutes.
Bunnings will return it to Ryobi, and it will most likely be re-conditioned and sold via Auction.

The el cheapos are, cheap for a reason.

  • +5

Just return it, don't say you're buying another. Return and simply say it wasn't suitable.

I've returned a few Ryobi products that I've bought and weren't good enough - I say 'it's not suitable' and only once was I questioned more, and I said that it didn't cut well.

After refund, just go buy the one you want.

    • I will give it a try. Thank you.

      • +1

Re. the larger Ryobi whipper snipper, the Bunnings guy talked me out of buying it as that's the one I initially wanted having had a 2-stroke of a similar design. In the end the basic $99 one (now $119) sufficed for me and although it looks more domestic, it does the job quite well. Does trim and edge well for my garden size.

  • How thick is your grass that the base model doesnt hack it ?

I've actually been pleasantly surprised with the base model.

    • +1

I use the same base model. I thought they pretty great. I even use it for 'lawn mowing before realize I'll never get that nice lawn feel with it ;). The one thing I realize after one year using it, there is release button in case the string gets too short. I spent $250 for the actual lawn mower, I won't spend this high for edger/line trimmer

      • +1

i think i paid closer to 500 (?) some years back for the 4 stroke petrol ryobi. Never been serviced, owes me nothing as been pretty trouble free.

  • +3

just return it and tell them it isn't up to the task required and you want a refund. I've done it plenty of times at Bunnings, Jaycar and Anaconda. Full refund given when u have a receipt.

If you want to BS a bit, say that u asked for advice and the team member said it would be OK for the job.

    • Don’t even need the receipt, if you know roughly when you bought it they’ll find it in their system. I’ve done this several times.

  • +1

The Ryobi $249 one with brushless motor and dual line is a beast.

Mind you its longer than the 'base' model and not telescopic, and also 5kg with battery installed.

Its good for arms, wrist exercise.

    • +2

      My arms/wrist definitely don't need more exercise…

    • +1

That's the one in my mind. I did notice the 'substantial' weight difference.

  • +3

They'll do it. Just tell them it's garbage, and you want to get the one with more power.

  • +2

When I took my ozito line trimmer back because it was "smoking" they didn't even open the box to see it was actually inside it and gave me a refund. Lol

    • That's because it was an Ozito. Though they should have checked that you didn't put a brick in there.

  • +1

OP, If people here said yes or no - what exactly does that tangibly mean??? Absolutely nothing

So why make it harder than need be - go to Bunnings and be as nice as possible and TRY to request this - they're the only party who can allow or disallow this.

There's zero legal - consumer law basis for doing this - so it'd be a pure goodwill move by them.

    • +1

I thought that this was the obvious action to take, but apparently not…

  • +5

Bunnings? They’ll take it back for any reason /thread

  • I bought the brushed 36v one thinking i'll save a buck.
they i bought an edger attachment and it kept overheating and stopping.

Lucky for me, line trimmer spool got jammed and i couldnt remove it. I tried elbow grease, WD40, wacking it, giant spanner - nothing. (it doesnt help that its design is such that the bump head is ALSO a plastic nut that is used to remove it)

took it to bunnings, and they let me upgrade to the punchy brushless one.

  • +1

Yes its bunnings so they're pretty lenient
    BUT
There has to be a line where the consumer needs to do enough due diligence in the selection process so that they don't use the product and then be like, oh i don't like it.

The old adage of you pay for what you get would apply here.

  • +1

Is your yard too big? I had a base one that did OK. It was a little less powerful and took a bit longer, but more convenient, quieter and the twist position for edging was pretty handy to took it as a win over fading around with petrol. Since I got a 36v mower I upgraded when a cheap 36v snipped was available bit would otherwise still have the 18v version.

  • +1

You should give it a go. We bought a lawn mower for an elderly relative. It had a soft catcher. After a few weeks of usage, relative complained there was dust going everywhere through the soft catcher, etc. We cleaned it up best we could (also drained the petrol) and returned it and explained to the manager what happened and if we could buy a more expensive one with a hard catcher that didn't have so much of a dust problem. Manager was kind enough to allow this to happen. Comps to the manager! YMMV.

In your case you could try to say you would like to buy the more expensive one because it also does x,y,z which the one you have doesn't.

  • +3

isnt that the main reason to buy from Bunnings. Keep receipt and return if not suitable.

BTW. When you are doing some job around the house and unsure if you need certain pipe fittings etc - buy them all and just return the ones you didnt use. Just keep them clean and unused, with original packaging.
This saves me SO many trips to Bunnings!!

  • I bought the Ryobi one + brushless whipper snipper after doing some research. I didn't think the base model had enough guts. I'm happy with it and don't want for a petrol model.

    • I found the lines deteriorated after a few years on a Petrol unit.

  • +1

I moved to a separate blade edge trimmer (cheapie Ozito) to cut between the lawn and concrete. Does the job quicker and more effectively as it cuts right down to the roots so you need to do it less frequently. Your line will last longer as edging chews through it quickly

    • We did the same thing, however it's not that good when the soil is drenched (even after a few days)

      • Nothing about lawn maintenance is fun with all this rain 🤣 Grass is nice and lush though

        • We had a trench dug yesterday, to get fibre optic to the house, so we'll have a small mound, for a few weeks.
Not only is the grass green, but so are the weeds. :(

  • Just take it back tell them you found did not do the job you needed it to do and you want to buy a better one Have found at least Kingsgrove are very good like that

  • I have the base model Ryobi 18V trimmer. Using the strimmer line isn't that great as it is only 1.5-2mm, but if you buy the flailing head replacement, that thing works really well as an edger and just better overall. You can get replacements for the blades easily too.

Use a thicker line. It makes a huge difference. I have the same model but thicker line has completely changed the performance.

  • Absolutely, I have done this recently on a lawn mower. After trying it out at home it performed very poorly so and I cleaned it up and brought it back with the receipt the same day and I was issued a full refund. I then went and selected a more powerful model paid for it and went on my way.

  • Read the Terms and Conditions of Returns/Exchanges re I have changed my mind.

  • +5

Whatever you do don't contact bunnings or pop back into the store. Get the general consensus here first 👍

    • +2

also ask on Reddit and Whirlpool and pool the advice

  • I had them let me do that before we got tool it wrong for job just tell sale guy lie to you need better happy to buy it now, they are RF product.

  • Just say you saw smoke and smelt burning plastic, buda bing.

  • +2

Please don’t. Sell what you have privately and buy something else. Use the advice of the Power Garden team members.

  • How about just ring up Bunnings and find out ? It's not that hard, lol 😂

  • +1

I bought the one with multi tool attachment and very happy with it. I got an edger and hedge trimmer attachments with that and it's perfect for my needs. The edger gives very nice look to the lawn.

  • -2

Yes but you need to say the right things. You might need to break something and say it's broken from out of box or normal use. If it's simply change of mind then they will say no.

  • yeah ima vote for just return it - clean it well and make it look as nice as possible with any packaging and receipt and just say at the returns desk 'not suitable'

unless it looks obviously dirty and damaged I'm guessing the returns desk will just take it, look at the receipt, and ask for your credit card to refund it to

hope you kept the receipt ? if not you could still try to finagle it if you can show your credit card statement for the matching amount to Bunnings

  • If you haven't already purchased the upgraded ryobi sniper. You should look into Ego. Plenty of videos on YouTube cutting some crazy stuff. My lawn mower does my 1500m block on one charge and my mate just bought their ride on all electric mower for their acreage. It's impressive and saves them a heap as they charge it on solar so they only pay for maintenance now. They said it saves them about $2k a year in fuel.

The ego lawn mower I got can cut through stuff my old petrol Briggs and stratton couldn't.

The ego whipper snipper is also great, got the carbon fibre pole to make it lighter and auto line load feature is so easy.
