I have this CPU, basically no difference with a 5600x so I'd recommend getting this one

    • Interesting given I paid $400 for the 5600x last year. :(

    • +1

Yes, the 5600 is definitely the better buy because you also get a cooler included. On paper the X has a marginally higher clock, but I’m sure that makes no difference in real life and you can easily OC the non X to match the X speed.

      • +2

        5600X also comes with cooler?

        • +1

Ah yes, sorry my bad. I was thinking of the 5700X (which I just bought a few days ago).

          • +1

@opt: You wouldn't (well shouldn't) use the stock cooler with the 5700X anyway so really it's just saving the planet.

  • So this is 20% better than a 5500x(5600G w/out the cpu) but we need to get a cheap gpu?

    • +1

      Yeh.

      I have a 5600g and a 5600.

If you have a gpu, then buy this, if you don't get the 5600g.

  • Almost time to upgrade my 3900X

    • Wonder for gaming if worth it from a 3800x

      https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-5600/16.html
10 pct fps more for 200…

      • The 5600 wouldn't be much of a jump for games, and then it might only be noticeable for single core games with no background apps running. The 5600x is a little better but still not worth the upgrade when considering the cores and threads

I don't think Amazon is participating in the free Uncharted Collection game promo though.

200 dollarydoos for a 6 core processor with great clock speeds. Man what a time to be alive.

    • +1

Just need a decent priced GPU to go with it now.
The 3070's need to hit around $500 ish for me.

      • If you don't mind going team red a 6700xt can be had for $400 and gets about the same performance (minus ray tracing if that matters to you).

        • +1

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind.
I think I'll stick with my 970 until it dies and then get the best card at that price point on the day. :)

          • @EightImmortals: Good call, especially at 1080p. If you upgrade to 1440p tho definitely worth a GPU upgrade :)

Wish AmazonAU is in the AMD Ryzen 5000 series game bundle (Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection) authorised retailers list. Or, there is a way to contact AMD directly to get this if purchased from Amazon AU?

    • +1

Retailers are the ones that give u the codes, amd I believe only redeems it for u. Thats it

  • Do you need a new Windows key if you want to upgrade from 3600?

Also, how difficult is a bios update on the motherboard? Currently have MSI X470 Gaming Plus MAX.

Edit: not that big of a jump in effective speed for upgrade. But curious about how to go about changing the processor

Do you need a new Windows key if you want to upgrade from 3600?

No, you don't need a new key even if you change the MB, but you may need to re-activate. But even that is not needed for a CPU change.

Also, how difficult is a bios update on the motherboard? Currently have MSI X470 Gaming Plus MAX.

Not difficult at all if you already have a compatible CPU. Just download the BIOS, put it on to a USB drive and follow the instructions here. The only thing you have to be mindful is not to interrupt the update while its happening.

not that big of a jump in effective speed for upgrade.

yes, I don't think it matters much either. A higher core count 5700x or 5800x(3D) may provide a bigger jump, but whether it'll be noticeable or worthwhile depends on your workload.

      • Thanks!

After you flash the BIOS to the latest version, run some stress tests to heat up the CPU a bit. That's because if you have an AMD stock fan, the thermal compound could stick to the CPU, and when cold, form a solid bonding layer to the CPU, so when you try to remove the CPU fan, you risk pulling the CPU out at the same time (which could bend some pins on your current CPU). It's less of an issue for Intel stock CPU fan (because Intel puts much smaller amount of thermal compound, whereas AMD seems to put a fair amount).

So, a warm CPU would melt the thermal compound a bit. That way, only the fan will be removed, leaving the CPU still in the socket.

The Windows registration record is generally linked to the motherboard.

          • @netsurfer: Can confirm this is a great idea…. I bent a number of pins on my 3600x while trying to remove the standard cooler… An hour or so later and some delicate surgery I managed to fix it but it was a very stressful time haha

Just went almost this same path.
I went from the 3400g to the 5600. On my Gigabyte motherboard it was a slight pain as I had to upgrade the motherboard BIOS 3 times and after I had done that and put in the new CPU it didn't boot. Luckily it was user error but took me a couple of hours to work out that I had got some thermal paste in the socket.
It was a massive upgrade for me. Everything's just that little bit snappier, games that were crashing now run fine. Well worth the $230 I paid for it a few months ago now.
Windows didn't need any reactivation for me - Windows 10 Pro

I used to have a 3600 and went to this processor but also ended up buying the 5800x3d. I HIGHLY recommend putting your money towards a 5800x3d instead or saving up for the new GPUS. The lows make a difference in gaming but then again dont buy a 5800x3d at full price :)

    • +2

If someone can afford the x3d then they aren't bound to buy a much more expensive gpu. However the most performance comes from the gpu, u can get some 3600mhz cl16 ram to get some pretty good 1% and 0.1% lows :)

  • Currently running 3600Xt @4.5Ghz and a 2060 Super. Ive got $1500 for a Gpu/Cpu upgrade. Is this an upgrade i should think about to maximize my GPU budget?

    • +1

personally? no. I've had the same AMD 3700X CPU for the past upgrades from GTX 1060, GTX 2060, RTX 3080 and yes the early GPUs were bottle necking the CPU but my framerates and game detail levels have only gone up. Personally I don't think you'll notice much of an upgrade by upgrading the CPU and keeping the GPU, you'll notice a huge difference by keeping the same CPU and spending the most on upgrading the GPU. I've thought many times of upgrading to a 5800x3d but for a 10-15% improvement in framerate at a cost of $500-700 - I'm prepared to wait another year or so and put it towards a new motherboard, probably an 8000 series AMD processor and DDR5 RAM in 2023 and my current system runs 1440p more than well enough at ultra game settings for my taste (and 144Mhz monitor).

  • This is the same as the scorptec price and you get Uncharted as well with it.

    • Did you get a confirmation from Amazon that they are a participating retailer of the game bundle promo?

*Update: Just chatted with Amazon support and they dont believe Amazon AU is a participating retailer of that promo although the support person I think is also just basing it on amazon product descrption and also the AMD promo site listed retailer :(

  • Recommended to upgrade from Ryzen 2700?

  • I have a 2700X and this is my first choice now for an upgrade. Sounds like if I go with a 3080 the 2700X would bottleneck it.
