Advice on a cheap RC car found on eBay (legit HBX 16889a Pro?)

I found this on ebay

And it even has an active coupon code. Which might bring it down to ~$124

I'm wondering if this is a legit HBX 16889a Pro? It does look very similar but I'm not well versed enough to know for sure. Plus the kV rating for the motor seems different from other places?

Would appreciate any help and guidance for an old fart who's looking into indulging a hobby from decades ago.

Just bit the bullet on this following your post and and few youtube reviews - this one includes 2 batteries - cost me $171

This guy says they are the same in his written review (also has youtube review) https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-16889a-pro-review…

Other youtubers also confirm they are just a rebranded HBX pro but with two batteries - https://youtu.be/YVt_w0GzRys

    Cheers :)

Where the cost saving might come from is with the battery, charger, speed controller and radio. Many cheap batteries like this may balloon only after a few uses if not already on arrival.

Even if the kit is a copy-and-paste from a better kit, it's still possible that it'll match genuine parts.

Just reporting that I did pull the trigger and the thing arrived in TWO days! I thought it'd be shipping from China or someplace. Am pleasantly surprised. Seller only had the 1 battery option in stock so there's that.

Anyway, without a complete teardown, it's definitely got the 2840 motor and the metal dogbones and aluminum shocks. I have yet to see if the drive train is fully metal.

One thing I've noticed is that there's a significant amount of clicking when I push the car (unpowered) I dunno if it's the diffs or something. Will have to do some research and probably try a blind teardown. I haven't been in the hobby for three decades, but if feels just like the first time. Only difference is, when I built my Tamiya, I was intimately familiar with every single part on it. Now I'm blind and feeling in the dark. lol

  • In case anyone has more experience on these type of things, is this noise normal?

Yeah. I’ve got the same car. Different seller with two batteries for about $120
Makes the same noises. It seems legit. I think…
Mine is a Xmas gift so I pulled it out gave it a once over and a quick spin and packed it up
I’m pretty sure it’s the real deal.
I’ll pull mine out tomorrow if you want but from that video we’ve got the same car and it looks very good to me

Excellent price you picked up for TWO batteries. Oh well. I couldn't find anyone else selling at that price point with more than one battery. I actually only got at it at this price because of a code.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I've been down a massively deep rabbit hole the past day or so. So yep, I've found that the clicking is completely normal. It's apparently the magnets flipping poles in the brushless motor.

I hope whomever is getting your Xmas gift enjoys it. I've had a couple of runs with mine today and it left me with a huge shit-eating grin. Certainly a lot of fun in a small and affordable package.

I got lucky with a seller with low stock and a 22% off code. I would have posted it as a deal here if there was more stock.

My 10 year old son should be very happy. I had bought another car from a different deal and have had a quick play with that but I thought that was too likely to break with him at the helm so I decided that can be his older sisters toy for Xmas and he can have this basher

I can also see the WLTOYS 144010 are cheap on eBay too so I might even try to pick one of them up for myself if the kids get into theirs
