Any Prior Experience Buying Refurbished Preowned Consoles at EB Games?

Hi all,

I purchased a Refurbished Preowned New 3DS XL from EB Games for $150 because I'm interested in homebrewing it. The prices of the console are $300+ on the aftermarket, so I thought it was a good buy.

Has anyone had any prior experience with buying preowned consoles from EB? Was the price too good to be true?

Thanks in advance :)

  • well you already purchased so you have it now ? - if the condition are good then yeah you get a good deal (best price was brand new from Amazon $100 in Dec 2018, by the way:)

I ordered for delivery because there aren't any stores in 100km that have it for C&C.

I'm not too worried about scuffs and scratches - that's just par for the course with preowned hardware. Just wondering if it's common to get faulty goods, what to look out for etc.

  • I'd say there's a standard price for the used consoles yeah? So wouldn't be indicative of the console's condition.

  • They're not $300 - whoever you saw asking that much is absolutely dreaming. You could have got one second hand for less than $150. But probably not that much less than $150 so it is an OK price for being able to pick it up right away and not having to deal with people on marketplace or Gumtree.

Things that can go wrong are the bottom touch screen no longer working or activating in the wrong place, or the control stick not working. If there are no problems with either of these things then you will be fine. They're reasonably sturdy machines.

    • I haven't seen any that were sub-$200. Where abouts do you look? Ebay sold listings have them between $250-$350 and Marketplace listings are all $300+ (none of the sellers wanted to go down to anywhere near $250 lol)

I'll look out for any of those issues, thanks for the tips! It'll be my first time homebrewing, but it doesn't look all too hard.

      • Hmm maybe you're right. I can't believe the prices have gone up so much in only a few years! Especially with the Switch existing - why would people pay nearly as much as a Switch is worth for the previous gen? I guess it is time to sell the misc ones I still have left!

        • Who really knows? It's not like they're really vintage.

Probably a good time to sell, especially since it doesn't sound like you paid anywhere close to this for yours. I've seen some of the limited editions going for $450+!

  • Got a wii-u from EB a few years ago.
It was fine - had a few scuff marks here and there but it didn't change the gameplay or anything.

$150 is a good price - seems like you could even flip it yourself for an easy $50-150. I'm surprised EB don't know it's true worth since every 3ds is now a homebrew machine.

I don't think so, unless it is a special edition.

My impression of prices, having done a lot of buying, modding and selling before and recently after the Switch coming out:
Original DS: $20-$100 (some people are treating them like vintage consoles now)
      DS lite: $20-$40
      DSi: $30-$60
      DSi XL: $30-$70
      Normal 3DS: $50-$80
      2DS: $30-$80
      Normal 3DS XL: $70-$100
      New 3DS: $90-$120
      New 3DS XL: $100-$150
      New 2DS XL: $100-$130

      • Most prices on ebay are around $200
Gumtree and marketplace are similar if not a bit more.

Cheapest I could find was $165 near me but otherwise most of them were up there.

you see them means they cant sell it.

the crazy is also ps vita prices

  • Why are you asking when you "purchased a Refurbished Preowned New 3DS XL from EB Games for $150 because I'm interested in homebrewing it."?

    • Since it was purchased from EB, I could always go ahead and return it upon arrival. I'm just asking about previous experience with preowned hardware from EB (e.g. if it's common to get faulty goods, what to look out for)

Sorry, I should've made my original post clearer.

  • I wouldn’t expect the battery to be in great condition.

  • I've bought a few for the exact reason of homebrew. I just got them from Facebook Marketplace. I paid $180 for a brand new one and as low as $70 for secondhand.

The battery will likely be kaput, but they have cheap replacements on ebay. EB only do very cursory checks of the consoles/items upon receiving them. I'm not sure if further testing is done or then it's simply put in the 'sale' pile.
