Except for it drains out your phone battery quickly.

        • Power the phone from the tablet if you need more power (presuming the usb port can act as a host).

        • +3

OOH I suggest purchasing the power bank at ALDI for $30. I've been using it for the last month and it charges a mobile phone within 2 hours and a tablet in 8 hours.

  • Good tablet but not really a bargain, its just a new release.

Also in whirlpool a lot of guys in Australia have got the 16GB version for $249 and 8GB version for $199.

I dont know how some guys are saying $50 off while others arent, I bought one at full Australian price.

    • +1

Link please. The price you're quoting is US prices without taxes.

    • +1

Got a link? I'd like to see that!

    • Er what? Evidence please

      • Link to the thread: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1872950

Page 8 and the next few pages after has multiple references from Australian people that bought them for $249 for the 16GB version.

I'm not quoting American prices without tax, Im quoting what they said bought it for here in Australia.

        • yea 1 person, when he could also be lying:P

      • They're not lying. When I first checked out the website I saw the 16GB selling for AU$249 but the 8 GB also selling for AU$249. I found it really weird but I can't get it to display the 16GB at $249 again. Must be a glitch.

  • +6

This tablet represents quite a seismic shift.
It just "set" the average price for a quality device.

    • I agree. Google tend to use the Nexus devices as setting the benchmark for the price:quality ratio for android devices.

However you could argue this is in reaction to the Kindle Fire.

  • +2

Gone as the days when you pay $200 for a aPad or ePad

  • I'm tempted to buy one and use it as PDA.

Much better than buying a Galaxy Note for 2x the price

But then again, there is a want vs need argument.

I already have an iPad, do i need another?

    • -3

      No.

      • +7

        yes

  • -7

No 3G / Only 8GB without SD card -> $250 Not a bargain IMO. Think that any good game is gong to use 1GB of the memory, GPS maps another portion, etc, etc.

This is just a new product, but not a bargain.

    • Erm…alternatives?

    • +1

      Agree,

Maybe at $199 I would have considered it to be a bargain.

    • -1

Yeah is there any alternative..? Please post.

      • Are we limiting it to 7" tablets?
There aren't really any good cheap 7"s, but if you can carry a 10" the Thinkpad tablet was $250 from Shoppingexpress / 2 for $400 at Centrecom tomorrow

A refurb Transformer is cheap and reliable @ $299 for 16gb

Both of those can get ICS, have expandable memory and (I think) better battery life. Thinkpad offers a stylus, and Transformer the dock

        Up to you really

        • ok lets discuss,

Thinkpad- dual core vs quadcore (in nexus7), waiting to get upgrade to ICS vs Jelly Bean…10"vs 7"

Original transfromer - same as above plus HEAVIER.

yea, stylus, yes dock…those really for me just MEH…as well as those 2 you suggested still more expensive than nexus 7. so are they a bargain compare to this?

        • Hey, I'm not selling em, just putting options out there

Thinkpad will have ICS by the time this gets to your door, and will cheaper if you can find a friend who wants one. To many expandable memory is extremely important - I had a 16gb Ipad and found it annoying as heck, 8 would be awful. Weight is a function of size.

Performance, I haven't used a quadcore android. I don't think it makes much difference now, but future proof is good.

        • Even vs 16gb nexus 7 they are still expensive because they are not as good value. Nexus means Google support. I take u as an apple user. Getting gadgets that are not nexus, meaning that it is support by manufacturers. Google promised 1.5years support. But not every manufacturer following suite. So it depends on your priority list for me nexus 7 is my choice among those 3

        • i take you as an Apple user

Ouch. I have a wifi Motorolla Xoom. It was sold as a "Google Experience Device", which was close to Nexus status- was supposed to get updates asap.

ICS was delayed about 4 months in Aus, had to flash it as a US device.

        • yea Xoom was the nexus tablet, but since Moto is bought by Google. they probably dont want to look like they give preference. Hence this Nexus tablet is manufactured by Asus.

But yea then you should know the benefit of Nexus series…

    • For this money, it's:
Tegra3+ Vs 1st Gen Dual Core tablet.

Additionally, you have nothing else to compare this to…well, except this maybe?
      http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/tablet/toshiba/7-inch-tab…

    • kids…

  • My opinion only.

    Pros:
    * Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) - Faster and more optimized than ever.
    * Quad-Core Tegra 3 in a 7-inch is almost unheard of.
    * 1280x800 - There are not too many 7-inch tablets with this resolution.
    * IPS Panel = 170 to 180 degree viewing angle.
    * GPS - Hard pressed to find a cheap Chinese tablet with this.
    * Bluetooth - Again, not very common in sub-$200 tablets.

    Cons:
    * 1.2MP front facing, should be 2MP nowadays.
    * No rear-facing camera.
    * 8GB internal is a bit puny for $249

    • +7

      What benefits would a 2MP front-facing camera bring, over a 1.2MP camera?

      • +4

        about 0.8 MP…..

Helps show up pimples better on a skype call.

    • +11

No SD slot is a killer but I am not too fussed about the cameras. Particularly no rear-facing camera is a plus to me.

    • +10

Agree… big con: no micro SD card.

    • +5

8GB & NO MicroSD is the problem.

  • -1

When the USA get this for $200, I dont see how this is a bargain..

    • +1

      USA price doesn't include tax

    • If you compare this to Apple overpricing from US to Aus its dirt cheap.

      • +2

I actually feel Apple is one of the best companies for US-AUS rates

Ipad - $499 US (pre Tax) v $539 (Inc GST)
Macbook Pro - $1199 US (pre Tax) v $1349 (Inc GST)

        as to

        Nexus 7 - $199 pre tax v $249 + delivery

        hurrr

        • +4

Are you forgetting the itunes store? :)

        • Fair point. Don't even get me started on digital content haha. I don't use Itunes but if it's anything like the US and Aus Playstation stores I bet we get gouged.

        • iTunes is music , not hardware, and prices are set in conjunction with the music distributors here in Oz. The publishers that our government supported in not allowing grey imports.

Plus if you use a prepaid iTunes card you can get 30% off whereas in the US its very hard to get more than 20% off. Often 10% is the norm.

  • +1

agree with the ppl above, no micro SD card is a BIG KILLER!!!

  • +3

16GB model ordered :) Lack of storage isn't an issue for me as I don't think I'll be holding many 720P MKV's on there to watch.

    $319 at checkout.

    • +1

Yer it's not like you'd notice the quality on a screen with that res … oh wait

      • +1

Unless you have laser vision, you can compress videos a fair bit for a 7" screen held at arms length

        • I was watching SD xvids on my 10" HP touchpad on the plane. at the viewing distance of the fold down table in the seat in front of me, they looked fantastic. Unless you're holding it right up close to your face, you're not going to need 720p MKVs on the nexus 7.

Where that great screen res is great though is for clear text. So web browsing, ebooks, comics, etc.

  • +3

Why is this listed as a bargain, its a new product launch at RRP?

Only deal is the $25 content.

    Pros
    Good hardware at good price
    Latest Android OS

    Cons
Limited ecosystem, no TV, only rental movies
Limited capacity particularly if you want to obtain content 'elsewhere' for playback on Nexus
    No 3G option

Tablets live and die by their ecosystem. Thats why iPad & Kindle Fire have succeeded and everything else has failed miserably. Good hardware at a good price isn't enough.

    • +5

That's why the title of this deal is "Bonus $25 Google Play credit…."

    • +2

The bonus $25 Google Play credit is what I was saying is the bargain(and the free movie) as it's for a limited time.

Magazines and tv shows are coming to Android. http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/06/27/google-play-store-up…

      • www.zinio.com. I've been using it for nearly a year.

As for TV shows, I don't really watch any (I spend too much time on Ozbargain).

    • It can connect to a TV in multiple ways.

      With Nexus Q
      With DLNA/WiFI
MicroUSB to HDMI (will probably require software mod like the Galaxy Nexus)

      • No TV shows in ecosystem but as commented above they are coming, US only to start

    • its a bargain because you cant get similar spec'd tablets for this price

  • +1

I brought the 16gb version on a whim because my tax return is coming up and I'm feeling stupid. I have a feeling that a netbook would have been more useful. Remember netbooks?

    • +2
    • Do you get tax invoice with today's date or shipping date? So you can claim as expense for this year tax. :)
I'm thinking of ordering it. It can be a test device for my web development.

  • i thought it is 199??????????????

    • $199 USD, $249 AUD :(

Still tempting even with the Australia tax added

  • why is there GST if it's imported? its under $1000?

    • because an Australian registered business is selling it to you.

      • you have to try to buy say from eBay i.e. a direct import from overseas sellers to you as an end user or consumer to avoid paying GST. I would say this post is more like "news" than a "bargain" as everywhere else will be selling at this price when it is generally available in Australia.

  • -1

    Great looking Tablet
    Only minor complaints are:
Screen res is a bit low for current generation devices
Lack of Card slot & USB Host
But for the money is a bargain

    • +1

are you sure it doesn't have a USB Host?
i.e. you cant connect an external drive?

    • +7

This is the highest-resolution 7" device in existence today. Full HD is less meaningful when the screen is smaller.

      • Very true but with devices reaching up to 350dpi be would nice to have a little bit more
I do like my ipad3 Screen at 264DPI very sharp for Text even on 2 page view.

        • My 2-year-old laptop is 224ppi. I find that it's awesome for a while, but when it comes to actually doing work, I want my text to be readable without straining my eyes. Having text the size of a phone book at half a meter isn't very useful.

    • The screen resolution is actually good for a 7" screen, they have less than half the surface area of a 10" screen.

  • -2

This is just a very very normal retail price, it cannot be called as a Bargain…

  • +1

$250 for an awesome tablet running the latest firmware and specs, first Nexus tablet, and free movies and $25 credit for Android apps. This is great.

    • No ability to expand isn't so great. Paying more than other markets is bloody awful. No "surface" keyboard, either:(.

(Yes, I'm waiting for Windows 8).

  • I think the idea behind this tablet is good, it's going in the right direction (value for money), but i think i'll wait for version 2.0, lack of expandable storage, and low internal storage plus no decent camera are the weakpoints for me. If my android phone wasn't so shit i wouldn't be looking at getting a tablet to replace my android device, not interested in having an android phone anymore, my sgs is a completely unreliable hunk of junk, really pissed off at samsung and to some extent google, but at least google support their own devices.

  • Will probably buy this since I've been looking for a small tablet to use for work and casual internet browsing. 8gb is alright I gather, it's not like I'm going to shove all my videos in it.

  • +1

I bought it already (the 16GB version), the specs are very good, I personally never watch movies on the tablet (not HD or even 720p anyway) so the lack of SD is not a turn off for me.

I will probably not notice the lack of the back camera, I can truly not think of 1 situation when it should come handy. I already have a good camera on my S2, that will be enough.

1 question… what is with the large bezels??? they seem huge to me compared to any other tablet I have seen :(. This is my only issue with it.

    • They actually seem a bit smaller than the comparable 10" bezels. They just appear larger because the screen itself has shrunk while your thumbs still need around the same border around to hold.

  • Review from C-Net, apart from the good things from this tablet, one small (or maybe big?) thing about UI:
"Android 4.1's toolbar and non-rotating home screen makes the OS feel very claustrophobic on the Nexus 7."
    link: http://reviews.cnet.com/google-nexus-7/

Apparently this tablet is intended to be used in portrait mode. I don't mind about it, since it's more comfortable to hold. But the lack of the possibility to change the home screen.. well, seems like an opposite of famous-Android identity (most costumisable OS).

    • +2

ADW EX, Nova Launcher, etc. Done!

      • +1

Yer I can never understand when people whinge about the UI on a particular Android device, the whole point of the OS is near-infinite customization.

      • there's even an app that all it does it rotate your apps and homescreen! (Set Orientation is it's name). Android customisability is great.

        • Am I taking crazy pills, I swear the Home Screen / App drawer rotate on Stock ICS? Definitely rotates on my 4.0 Xoom

  • -1

So Australia's getting ripped off from the start. Great - I thought Google might be above that crap. $249 for exactly the same item that costs $199 in the US.

    • US$199…
      …plus sales tax.
      …plus international shipping.
      = not much difference

      • international shipping is $20

so 25% for tax!? where did they get that from?!

        • +1

It seems you think this is the the first time Australians pay more for something.

  • how do we get the white version?

it looks like it is available.
    http://www.slashgear.com/google-nexus-7-vs-the-ipad-28236106…

  • I went through the checkout process but there was none that mentioned I will get $25 of credit and free contents..

  • Man can't wait to get this thing, going to be a major chick magnet.

    • +1

As opposed to Ipads which are more of a man on man magnet.

      • +4

        That's outrageously biased, Schlomo !
…..there are some VERY angry lezzos that love these too/

  • This thing looks great but does it let you do other things like surfing the internet as well? Also, does this thing have HDMI? Sorry I am not a really tech person…………………

    • Yes you can surf the net, listen to music, play videos and games, read ebooks.

Unfortunately, it does not have hdmi.

    • Lol it would be funny if you couldn't surf the internet with it… Especially coming from google!

Have you just woken up from a 10 year comma or something? (genuinly curious what made you ask that)

      • What part of "not really a tech person" didn't you understand?

        • Sorry my wife is "not a tech person" but she would expect a tablet to be able to obviously surf the net… So IMO that doesn't cut it.

      • +8

Have you just woken up from a 10 year comma or something?

I don't think that a 'comma' would last for 10 years, it would take at least a semi-colon or question mark to keep a person under for that long! Thankfully for goodonservice it wasn't a full-stop, coz we all know that's a terminal condition! :p

      • OK so my Swype's auto correct decided coma was meant to be comma.. glad you got a few lols out of it ;-)

    • Sorry man, it doesn't run DOS and it ain't 1993 anymore.
