I just tested this, there's actually nothing stopping me from registering multiple free .co, .online and .store domains

Ventra are the worst company. They advertised all these hosting deals years back to get people into their ecosystem and then massively price jacked. You could forgive that right? Capitalism?

Then they took that jacked price and multiplied that by five again, trying to force lower value clients off their servers.

For those who stayed they offered free months and "hassle free" and all this rubbish - at one point even free beer mugs!!! But then they didn't deliver on any of it.

Just avoid them. They're the GoDaddy of Australia now.

I use Ventra IP mostly for domain regos - one of the few that's actually Aussie owned I think.

Just to balance what you said, I've personally experienced consistently and exceptionally good customer support (100% local Aussie helpdesk?) when I've needed it for all sorts of things, including a hosting account I started using recently.

Having said that, maybe every other provider in Australia is offering all the above, but at a fraction of the price? 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you're talking about .au accreditation yes they would be one of the handful left that are owned by an Australian entity. But there is tons of Australian web hosting providers that are solely owned by Australians.

I'd be curious to know how recent this experience is?

Not exactly a fraction of the price but pricing can be much better elsewhere in my opinion the same level of support you used to get in the good old days of VentraIP.

Some providers you can save a lot of money because they use and have ditched cPanel on some plans which can give you quite a bit of cost saving given the ongoing price rises with that product that the web host have to pass on.

Two months ago, with my first serious go at setting up web hosting using cPanel. Quite a few from their team helped me as I was setting up a Client Portal system that needed Wordpress, which I'm no expert on.

Thanks for the heads up on that!

@Member 0230: The Investment capital firm that owns cPanel + WHMCS and Plesk much much more that these hosting providers rely on has been increasing the prices for the last few years and it doesn't look like they're planning on stopping any time soon with annual price increases expected for the foreseeable future.

These costs will need to be passed on to customers because web hosting companies will not be able to absorb them long-term so expect an annual price rise.

As well as bill shock if you don't pay too much attention to the discounted rate and the full normal price if you take advantage of some of the pricing in the steel.

    • Do you have an alternative Australia-based host you'd recommend? Or a foreign-owned company with Australian servers and competent customer support?

I just noticed the price hike recently (missed the email) and the numbers are a bit scarier upfront for my poorer clients (I can reduce CPU, RAM and disk space but only so far while having room to grow). It seems most of the "premium" hosts have increased hosting prices as well, partly attributing blame to new cPanel licensing costs and new infrastructure investments. VentraIP claims their new CPUs are the real deal, but I've never really noticed any difference in the things I can feel (like a responsive wp-admin). If anything, I think some US-based servers with a variety of caching features used by default have felt faster (e.g. Interserver).

VentraIP has the best customer support I've ever dealt with when it comes to Australian hosting. No $3/hr script regurgitators. MelbourneIT has consistently been an absolute nightmare, with my most recent torture in March this year (took them a week to admit DNS issues after a week of generic unrelated replies). However, I did have trouble getting through to VentraIP online and over the phone a few weeks ago, so I wonder if they've outgrown their staff numbers.

Take a look at Clickhost or DreamIT, it's who I'm pretty much moving most of clients services to these days. For me personally I've moved past traditional web hosting for my personal stuff and all of its running in the cloud mostly for free.

That used to be the case unfortunately things have started to go downhill.

        No $3/hr script regurgitators.

        You've been lucky.

However, I did have trouble getting through to VentraIP online and over the phone a few weeks ago, so I wonder if they've outgrown their staff numbers.

There we go, yeah it's been like this for nearly a year or two in my experience and support has been sleeping the only thing that really save them is the quality of service but even that is not worth the price when the support is slipping as there's much better players in the market that off of both.

MelbourneIT has consistently been an absolute nightmare, with my most recent torture in March this year (took them a week to admit DNS issues after a week of generic unrelated replies).

I'm dumbfounded how often the surprises people this company has been terrible for years and I do mean years 10+ nothings changed other than the ownership they gobbled up everyone else and flew too close to the sun and then had to sell everything off in pieces and unfortunately the new owner doesn't appear to give a shit.

I remember that issue from a few months back dealing with them on it was horrible. Unfortunately the system that they use for this is so outdated and it's pretty much on rinse and repeat to have an incident every year or every two years.

        • Thanks for the recommendations. I also heard about those 2 on Whirlpool (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9pxjpql4). Definitely considering them for new low-budget clients.

          • @peterpeterpumpkin: Used to heavily recommend VentraIP just can't recommend them in good conscience these days. I'm the same Kyle-K over there as well and like VentraIP both companies have representation on here and Whirlpool.

For my day job no client related stuff is hosted with VentraIP, Same with my personal side business but we do use Synergy Wholesale for .au domains at both, everything client hosting related moved Clickhost or DreamIT based on requirements.

Corporate infrastructure and personal website projects are all with cloud service providers most of it for free.

Think VentraIP is ok. No issues so far. I have .au, .online and .store with them.

  • Can comment on holding domains with these guys. They've been the best price we've found with all the support included. For hosting we are still with Siteground though.

    • Then I would say you're not looking hard enough. The only competitive price for domain names that they actually have is direct .au. You can find competitive pricing and good support with others.

Porkbuns pretty good for all gTLDs, comes with a couple of features you don't get with VentraIP like HTTPS based redirection.

VentraIP is got pretty good prices on direct .au for now while they're committed at selling at wholesale. They also have the best .au registration system but you don't need to use them to get access to that you can use a reseller.

Clickhost is great started and founded by former members of NetVirtue that didn't join the company after acquisition via VentraIP. Clickhost like NetVirtue just Synergy Wholesale resell Great pricing better than VentraIP and even better support in my opinion.
