Comet Goldfish $4.99 + $12 Postage ($0 C&C) @ Sydney Aquascapes

50
  • Current size: 6-7cm in length.
  • Adult size: 30cm in length.
  • Omnivore, but primarily eat protean foods.

Goldfish, one of the most popular breeds of pet fish, are a lovely golden color, can survive a range of temperatures and water parameters, and are in general fairly hardy and peacefull… To anything it can't fit in its mouth.

Although often being thought of as beginner fish, this isn't exactly the case. They get very big, requireing a large tank to accomodate them, and are a bit messy, making a decent filter a requirement. But if you understand the basics, they are a lovely, relatively low-maintanence pet.

Keeping Goldfish FAQ

Water changes?
About 20% weekly. Don't clean the tank otherwise, other than optionally scraping the walls or vacuming the substrate every so often.

Tank size?
At least 4-6x the length of the fish is ideal, but the bigger the better. Eventually these should end up in a pond but not everyone has that option.

Feeding?
Once per day is enough, any standard fish food. Note, they will eat algae and some plants as well. Duckweed is a great snack to keep them healthy as well.

Tank mates?
Don't keep them with shrimp! Anything they can fit in their mouth they will have a go at, but otherwise won't usually be too aggressive to other fish.

Silly question… can you post fish?

    • Exactly my thought too….
Aren't they gonna run out of oxygen?

      • +1

        They go ….. Air Freight.

      • +1

We post in Breather bags with air and water in them as well. Breather bags let oxygen through but not water, and they are perfectly fine in most cases. Occasionally the post gets delayed (especaially with covid) and this is most often when we get losses, but often they are still fine even when this happens.

    • can you post fish?

      here you go…

    • I had about 30 fish packed up and shipped (flown) when I moved from Brissy to Newcastle. Only had one die and got a $30 refund for that.

  • " Please note I cannot guarantee your parcel will arrive on time, however will refund any DOA livestock. "… something is telling me you will do this a lot .

Sounds cruel & inhumane to post live animals.

      • +2

I wouldn't say so, not much more than keeing them in tanks in the first place. The trip is short with express, they have breather bags to keep the air in and although there is a chance of them dying if there are delays, its not any more common than new fish dying in tanks when mistakes are made. Not that this is a good thing, and we try and make sure all our customers know how to care for their fish, but the point stands that comparatively postage isn't such a big strain on the fish.

        • +1

Look I'm sure you take every precaution, my issue is with the indifferent delivery contractors who might toss the package around etc.

          • +2

@The Judge: I don't dissagree, you are right and that is an issue. Unfortunately there probably isn't much I can do about that, and although posting feels extremely inhumane, I feel its one of those things which feels much worse than it actually is.

          • @The Judge: Have you ever been snorkelling on a reef? Fish thrive in much rougher conditions than the occasional postie toss.

            • @bargaino: A vast & unlimited ocean versus a small bag, gee that's an apt comparison 🙄

    • +2

Not that much, with ~20-30 parcels a week, there is sometimes one which has a problem, so under 5%, I'm not sure if you would count this as a lot or not.

  • This smell fishy :D

  • For the love of all that is holy, please do not get a comet unless you have a pond to place them into, as they grow to a very large size very rapidly.

    • +1

Agreed, Goldfish, although can start in smaller tanks, grow big and need quite large ones eventually. Plan for a pond if you want to keep them long-term and not give them away.

    Cruel and unnecessary.

You can buy goldfish everywhere, why inflict a living creature to such distress.

In the day when I used to have fish I'd buy them at the closet shop and get them back to my tank as quickly as possible.

This really should be a category that is banned on ozb.

Some people live remote and do not have that option.

Regarding postage: I wouldn't say so, its not much more cruel than keeing them in tanks in the first place. The trip is short with express, they have breather bags to keep the air oxygenated with plenty of water and although there is a chance of them dying if there are delays, its not any more common than new fish dying in tanks when mistakes are made. Not that this is a good thing, and we try and make sure all our customers know how to care for their fish, but the point stands that comparatively postage isn't such a big strain on the fish most of the time.

Thanks for being upfront with the "this fish is not for beginners" and the warning about larger tank sizes and requirement. I've seen too many shops that sweep that info under the rug in an effort to make the sale.

    • Yes, I remember my childhood days of exploring the pet shop, and how little information I got on actually caring for them. XD

  • Postage? XD

  • Can snakes and mice (their meal) be posted too and hamsters and…..

    • Snakes prefer to be posted "with" mice!

  • What type of snails can we put with them? and how many would fit in a 130L tank?

  • Had gold fish-es in my pond and taken by unknown bird.
