Help with Miele Appliances - Questionable Quality and Misleading Advertisements

Hi All,
We bought number of Miele appliances (now regret) during our kitchen renovation.
We bought it mainly because of Miele’s reliability and quality claims ; “Tested to 20 Year of usage”, “Ultimate Reliability”, “Quality ahead of its time” and so forth. Our experience with Miele appliance were totally opposite.
We have a microwave/Oven combo, Standalone oven, cook-top, range hood, dishwasher and a heat pump dryer (last mistake). So far dishwasher and range-hood seemingly working okay. Rest of the appliances having one of the other issue.
What we found is all the issues started showing up soon after warranty and gradually getting worse. The customer service seems extremely rude.
• Microwave – Non usable at this moment. One of the hinge pin came off. Previously the rotary dial was malfunctioning and was replaced
• Heat pump dryer – takes forever to dry and automatically restarts the cycle
• Cooktop – locks up while cleaning. Works only if power off/on from wall plug
• Oven – seems uneven temperature at locations
• Range hood – started getting noisy
• Dishwasher - doesn’t dry well

I called Miele this morning to see if they could look into the issues. Their response was, I need to pay nearly $200 (for each unit) for them to have a look. If that “looking” takes more than 30 minutes, I need to pay additional amount. After that, the technician will decide how much it will cost to fix it.

When I googled , the issues are common with Miele appliances . So they could just bring the part and fix it. Looks like they have built this as a revenue stream and doesn’t want to fix it at the time of visit.

Can someone please advise how to deal with these false/misleading claims they used for advertising? Someone recommended to lodge a complaint with ACCC.

Also I would like to see if other customers are also facing similar issues

My biggest regret :
I should have read the product reviews before purchase

Should have done the googling before purchase? How old are these items now?

    • I wish.

      someone just put a link

        And the second question?

        • Between 5 and 6 years. Some of the issue started form 3rd year. Ex microwave rotary dial. 4th year it became worse

@apaul: Your problem is getting sucked into one single brand and none so far has been successful with such broad claim. Miele may be good with their bagged vacuum, dishwasher and washer but I wouldn't bet on them for microwave. Choosing a single brand might make your kitchen pretty but for the price paid you're putting a huge gamble. Failing appliances after 6 years is hard call, you might get some luck with dryer or dishwasher by quoting ACCC but if the problems sound familiar then just go diy or independent repairer route.

I would take those statements from Miele as advertising puffery only.

…we found is all the issues started showing up soon after warranty…

If the issues occurred outside of the warranty period, you just need to work through it and decide if you want to go through that process or replace them.

But why would companies lie to me????

You purposely skipped telling us how long you have had them for.

A lot of your issues can be caused by poor maintenance. e.g. Are you cleaning lint from your dryer after every use? Are you using the right setting on oven? Dishwasher?

Have a read through the manual.

    • Yeah, and does he have the newer dishwasher that opens itself when the cycle is done?

  • (touch wood) most of our Miele appliances have been good - but I use a credit card which includes an 'extended warranty' which has been helpful on one occasion. Didn't cover me 100% but at least 80% of the re-purchase was not from my wallet.

I find repairing things like that is very hit and miss - you really have to research it first to see if it is going to be easily identifiable and repairable (otherwise you just get hit up with endless call out fees and buying parts that don't fix the issue etc)

You can try ACCC but they will just give you a brochure on the ACL - so you have to go Karen at Miele - or go direct to the place of purchase and try your luck there (they will try to fob you off to Miele but the brochure will tell you that's not on).

  • Talk to your Meile rep instead of dealing with Meile yourself. They will bend over backwards for you and they know how to deal with Meile. The Meile reps are one of the biggest perks of buying into the Meile ecosystem.

We are the only manufacturer in our branch of industry to test products such as our washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and ovens to the equivalent of 20 years’ average use

Maybe your usage level is beyond the average use?

    Then read this

Notwithstanding testing during the development phase, individual machines may require occasional servicing or may require repair or replacement of core components. In this respect, the statutory warranty provisions apply and – where applicable – additional provisions on product

Which probably means, they provide the parts, you need to pay for the service? RIP

  • cant comment on much but we have a heat pump dryer (different brand) and it also takes quite a while and have to be really mindful of not overloading it (esp if you use Bath sheets as towels)
Could just be a heat pump thing?

1.5 from 827 , and the feedback is that their after sales support is the reason for the 1.5

We bought it mainly because of Miele’s reliability and quality claims ; “Tested to 20 Year of usage”, “Ultimate Reliability”, “Quality ahead of its time” and so forth.

Miele has been riding on the coat tails of yesteryear for a long time now. All these legacy brands are really.

The problem is, you don't make money selling a dishwasher every 20 years when others are selling one every 5 years.

I think you've been suckered in by Miele's marketing.

Other than their dishwashers and washing machines, I don't think they are anything special but are expensive for what you get.

    • Microwave – Non usable at this moment. One of the hinge pin came off. Previously the rotary dial was malfunctioning and was replaced

Sorry to hear, but all non-Japanese/Korean microwaves are overpriced junk.

    • Heat pump dryer – takes forever to dry and automatically restarts the cycle

Heat pump dryers are notorious for taking forever to dry. Automatically restarting is a fault.

    • Cooktop – locks up while cleaning. Works only if power off/on from wall plug

I'm assuming it's induction. Did this occur during warranty? Seems like it has something to do with a safely mode so kids can't accidentally turn it on.

    • Oven – seems uneven temperature at locations

    It should be quite even.

Does it burn part of the lasagna? Kind of difficult to prove/repair.

    • Range hood – started getting noisy

Miele rangehoods aren't very good. Is it normal noisy or unbalanced/dying bearing noisy?

    • Dishwasher - doesn’t dry well

Most dishwashers don't dry plastics well. Pop open the door after the cycle ends.

  • We have had the full suite of Miele appliances for up to 25 years:

Clothes Washer and Clothes Dryer - Both used 4-5 a week and the washing machine has been serviced once in the 10 years of ownership.
Oven - serviced twice in 25 years and each time for a problem with the door hinge
Microwave - serviced once in 25 years to have a dial replaced.
    Range Hood - never serviced.
    Cooktop - never serviced.
Dishwasher - serviced 3 times in first 15 years for water pump issues. Replaced after 15 years with a new unit for which the circuit board needed replacing (at no cost) after 4 years)

Biggest gripe is calling their service centre and getting put on hold. Then needing to wait a couple of weeks for a service call to fix the problem.

  • damn straight their washing machine is terrible. my mother in law washing machine just past warrenty and it died.

    unbelievable
    this is systemic

    it only last 29 years
terrible, i expected it to last 30 years

    u demand compensation
    what a scam
    i demand an investigation

    • I highly recommend a royal commission.

  • All my main kitchen appliances were Miele. The dishwasher failed about a year outside warranty. I contacted customer service and quoted their advertising claims regarding reliability, long life, etc. The end result was that Miele paid for the dishwasher repair, as well as a new door ($900!) for the microwave which was also out of warranty. They were actually very quick and easy to deal with.

I've got a miele washer, dryer and oven for close to 10 years now. Only had trouble once with the dryer when the circuit board died. Paid for labour but the replacement part was free. Didn't think there's anything wrong with their customer service.

Speaking of customer service, sometimes i wonder if people use the wrong tone or words, or being unclear, to get what they want

  • My miele appliances (dishwasher and oven, rangehood) are all over 10 years old. Everything works fine. Though i dont go to product review to give them 5 stars

  • Also wondering about this as someone researching for new cooktops, ovens, rangehoods to replace my older ones. Anyone got suggestions for long lasting energy efficient ones?
