Unknown Apple AirTag Alert

Yesterday I received a message on the home screen of my Apple iPhone to say that I had received an alert for my airtag. Did I wish to continue to receive alerts? Yes or no. I can’t remember the exact wording but it was very similar. It also appeared to be associated with an app as it was preceded with an icon. I don’t have any airtags or the associated app. I ticked “no” for notifications.

Is this some sort of scam and if so what do I need to do?

  • Did you use google to see if anyone else has seen the same message and what they did about it?

    • Yes. I also checked Scamwatch and couldn’t see any reports about such but it is a little unsettling .I was having problems logging in to some government websites on my phone today.

Perhaps someone else has installed an AirTag and is tracking you…

    Someone is tracking Sheila

    • Don’t know why. I’m an old dinosaur!

      • "I’m an old dinosaur!"

Doesn't mean a thing. I saw a US news story on youtube where criminals are hiding airtags on vehicles they think they can steal easily and have some value. Basically they put it somewhere hidden on the underside of the car to find out where it's parked then attempt to steal it during the night when everyone is asleep.

I am not sure exactly what your situation is, but maybe bring your iphone near your car and open up the home screen to see if anything pops up. If the airtag is nearby I think you can use your iphone to determine it's exact location.

        • Thanks. I’ve been in the car today and I’ve had no further notifications.

          • @Sheila Dealer: Ok that should rule out the Airtag being on your person or car.

According to the Apple website, if the Airtag is detected moving with you in your car or bag it will show a message on your iPhone saying "Unknown Airtag Found moving with you". So if that hasn't happened I think you are in the clear.

If you ever do get that message Apple says there should be an option to tap which triggers the Airtag to make a noise, which will make it easier to find.

  • I think people can set up their Airtags to display a message to be displayed by other iPhones when in range of the tag, is it possible thats what it was?

    • No. Not that I’ve been made aware.

  • I’ve spoken to someone who works for Apple. Apparently if you’re near an AirTag for over an hour it will send you a message, but the phone is still very secure so hopefully all is well. I live in a unit so maybe our neighbours have AirTags.

    • Yes, that'll be what it was. They added that feature as there were complaints that AirTags were being used to track people without them knowing. So now it alerts you if detects a unit been in your vicinity for a long period. No scam and nothing to worry about.

  • You could be being tracked unknowingly. I’d do a through search of all your items you were wearing or in/near when the alert came up.
