What Kind of Milk Do You Put in Your Coffee?

I used to use normal cow’s milk, but currently I’m using Bonsoy, recommended by a friend. The first time I tried bonsoy I thought it was nearly as good as cow’s milk. Now that my taste buds have adjusted to Bonsoy, cow’s milk tastes weird (sour).

Oat milk tastes ok but doesn’t froth well. The interesting thing about Bonsoy is that it doesn’t have any added oil, and despite being quite low in fat, it still produces excellent foam. Aldi’s soy milk is not bad as a cheap substitute for Bonsoy, and Vitasoy is OK. I’m not a fan of almond milk. Haven’t tried anything else.

I was using 2%, but then switched to full cream because I heard it steams better. But I think I'll go back to 2%. I use UHT because it lasts longer open in the fridge and forever in the cupboard.

    • -8

UHT flavour is consistent too. Unlike regular cows milk where it changes throughout the year.

      • +95

        Agreed, it's consistently horrible.

        • -2

Yeah weird how it changes throughout the year.

        • +2

Taste buds adjust to slight differences pretty quickly.

      • +12

UHT and international roast combo would be economical, this is OzB

        • UHT goes through extra processing and most unlikely to go off I don't understand why it's cheaper.

          • +1

@skillet: It's not very nice mostly, bit like powdered potato mix.

            • +1

              @G-rig: Australia's Own doesn't taste like UHT

              • @Clear: Its the one UHT i find almost as good as fresh milk. However, i have not been able.to find it in the supermrket for the last year. :(

          • +1

            @skillet: refrigeration. wastage. quality.

          • @skillet: Good question. It's like the cost of electricity if we could store the excess in batteries. Cost will drop drastically because they'd be no wastage. Same here. They're utilizing the excess efficiently.

          • @skillet: No need for a cold transport chain, and can be stocked on normal shelves. Probably less wastage if it doesn't sell quickly enough too.

        • +2

I used to volunteer and the organisation bought International Roast just to get the volunteers to stop stealing the coffee.

    • If you are unaware, you can get barista specific UHT milk that steams up really nicely.

I’m sad human breast milk falls under “other mammal’s milk” rather than its own category like cow’s or goat’s or rat’s.

    • That way it includes breast milk and other……

    • +2

Do you put human breast milk in your coffee?

      • +7

Is that weirder than putting cow breast milk in your coffee?

        • +2

          bull milk anyone?

        • +2

Probably since it’s significantly more effort on the individuals part to have human cow’s milk on hand for their coffee and ‘weird’ refers to something outside the norm. Human milk in coffee = unusual, cows milk in coffee = very common. I personally prefer the taste of cows milk. As does my human child now he’s grown out of breastfeeding.

          • +1

@morse: Cross species lactation could be considered weird too, humans are the only ones to drink another animal's milk, and to drink it after the age of infantcy.

Plenty of better, healthier more sustainable cruelty free options these days, it isn't the 50s anymore.

            • +4

@G-rig: ‘Could be considered weird’ - but isn’t by most… there’s a whole lot of things humans do that others species don’t. Internet commentary worrying about what kind of milk other people drink being one of them.

              • @morse: Yeah usual argument hey, no animals can play a musical instrument either..
It's just generations of brainwashing from the Dairy industry that's the problem, it's not good for you and plenty of better alternatives.

There's a reason why there is such an obeasity problem in the western worlds, cows milk was designed to grow a calf into a 300 pound bull.. not to mention all the nasties in it bloody, puss, antibiotics etc.

Most people wouldn't want to watch the doccos to see why dairy is scary, or stuck in their ways or both.

                • @G-rig: I’m not having an argument. It appears you are.

                • +1

@G-rig: How good is cheese though?

I drink soy milk because of lactose intolerance, but cheese, ice cream, cream in general - there's just no good alternative.

                  • @Save Medicare: no arguement, just information.

Yeah those luxuries aren't really necessary but no doubt people enjoy - cheese is pretty addictive.
pretty high in calories the lot of it.

Don't know why Coles/Woolies don't stock Sanitarium so good ice cream any more.. no demand over winter at least.

                    • @G-rig: G-rig

                      Yeah usual argument hey

                      Also G-rig

                      no arguement

Seems like you are after an argument.

Anyhow I had some cottage cheese on toast for breakfast. Those ‘calories’ ought to keep me going through the morning. Is that not the point of eating food? To get calories and nutrients?

                      • @morse: all good everyone is free to do as they please.
It's the ones not aware of hidden/excess calories that are the issue.
                        Anyhoo.. out.

                • @G-rig: Obesity problem..from cow's milk? Here is me thinking a calorie deficit would work while still enjoying some cows milk in my coffee.

                  • @SonOfATightASS: was thinking cheese and people that overdo it with the dairy.

            • @G-rig: nup' i've had dogs "breastfeed" cats, sheep and goats ect, i suppose in the 50s people still had some notions about what animals do when they are not on Peta advertisements.

              • @juki: So would you drink milk from a dog or a rat? don't see why not using your logic.

                • @G-rig: :) I'll have to rewatch that Simpsons episode I couldn't think of a quote for you.

I was replying to your comment about humans being the only species that drinks milk from another species, and that claim was erroneous as I've had my own animals do that.

Not even a question of logic, re check your initial message.

                • @G-rig: Rat?! I'm outraged, you promised me dog or higher.

          • +1

@morse: like cows milk, human milk changes based on what is consumer by the milk maker. cows keep a consistent diet to keep the flavour the same. the humans dont.

    • Human breast milk AKA Luxury Milk

    • where do you get human breast milk?

      • where do you get human breast milk?

I'm no expert but I'd say from human breasts.

    • I’m sad human breast milk falls under “other mammal’s milk”

      Tony isn't!

Oat milk tastes ok but doesn’t froth well

Which ones have you tried? I find the Vitasoy unsweetened oat milk froths really well, but not the “oat milky” one.

    • +1

Yep that’s the one I favour now, vitasoy oat milk unsweetened

    • +4

Isn’t oat milk just runny porridge?

      • +1

        I see you’ve never tried oat milk…

Also pro tip: using oat milk in porridge instead of water makes it so much creamier.

        • +2

Where are the teets on an oat?

          • +9

@Brian McGee: That comment is getting old 🙄

Sure. It’s not milk. It’s blended, creamy oat water. Great job pointing that out - no one’s ever done that before.

FWIW I drink oat water because I almost had a heart attack about two years ago and oats, specifically beta glucans, which is present in unflavoured oat waters, helps keep cholesterol low. Cows milk, especially full cream, could swing things back the other way.

            • @jjjaar: I'm on a treatment that is known to mess with LDL/HDL and have found that a combination of citrus bergamot, grapeseed extract and good ole plant sterols has helped keep it within the reference range quite well.

I'll have to have a look into the benefits of beta glucans now that you've mentioned it.

            • -2

@jjjaar: I doubt it, it wasnt the fat or cholesterol that did that, its the sugars, carbs and starches that your eating. People have been on a low cholesterol diet, as recommended by health and govt departments for 40+ years, but look at the record numbers of heart and other diseases. It will take a leap of faith ( and a bit of research from you) to realise that yourself, and others, including me, have been given false advice. Cholesterol levels has little to do with it, but inflammation does, caused by the sugars.

              • @ippybear: I said it “helps keep cholesterol low”. At no point did I claim that oat milk alone / reducing my high cholesterol alone solved my heart attack risk.

          • +1

@Brian McGee: On the udder side

  • -1

Whats the point of this poll? You try to redeem your self drinking something not normal? Just walk into a super market and check how big is the Full cream cow’s milk section. That's your answer.

    • +5

Just curious what everyone is drinking. No redeeming here. Actually I’d like to go back to cow’s milk because it’s cheaper. But now it tastes sour and gross. I guess I could become desensitised to the sourness again after a few weeks.

      • +1

But now it tastes sour and gross.

I agree soy is sour and gross.

      • -2

Part of enjoying good coffee is smell, texture and taste, why would you want to stuff any of that unless you are lactose tolerant or perhaps some religious reasons?

Have you check all the ingredient list in back of those alternative milk?

        • +3

Not sure about the others, but ingredients of Bonsoy are :

Filtered water, Organic Whole Soybeans, Tapioca Syrup, Sea Salt, Job's Tears (a grain similar to barley), Calcium Carbonate

          • @ForkSnorter: Problem is some overpower the coffee like almond milk. Essentially hot almond milk and not coffee.

        • +3

why would you want to stuff any of that unless you are lactose tolerant or perhaps some religious reasons?

There is also the ethical reason for not consuming cow's milk, i.e. the cows are abused and treated solely as milk machines, we separate mothers from their calves to maximize profit, male calves are killed for veal soon after birth and the cycle is repeated with cows being continually impregnated for a few years before being slaughtered. There's also the impact on the environment and climate being unfavorable when compared to plant-based milks.

          • @GrownShrooms: Agreed. The last few years I've switched to black coffee mostly. I can't tolerate milk v.well anyway so the adjustment wasn't difficult. My fave is oatmilk. My partner prefers cows milk so I either get mini uht milks or a powdered milk. Unless my parents are visiting, then it's run to the shops and stare for way too long at the milk fridges, trying to work out what the hell all the differences are and how I can buy the smallest milk possible 🤣

          • +1

@GrownShrooms: Curious why all the downvotes for replying directly with facts to a question (albeit rhetorical)?

            • +7

@GrownShrooms: People attack because they feel judged by someouelses ethics. Even though it's just someone elses ethics. It's also fact. But people often don't like that either, especially when it challenges their behaviours.

          • @GrownShrooms: Ethic is like a religion to me, so is the veganism, its what you believe, I respect that.
Its can also open a can of worms, what about ethics of coffee, there are plenty of none ethical coffee out there too.

        • +2

why would you want to stuff any of that unless you are lactose tolerant or perhaps some religious reasons?

Because people have different tastes. It's not rocket science.

We've only been using it to mean "milk-like plant juices or saps" since 1200 AD. Still too soon for you?

Do "stuff isn't meat" next so we can take a trip back in time to Old English when it meant "food" and we had white meat (dairy) and green meat (vegetables).

Also the Asian food aisle at Coles must trigger you hard, what with all the coconut milk on the shelf.

Bonsoy is my go to and I know what you mean about cow milk testing weird now…

I can't stand most other milks in my coffee, including most other brands of soy, although happy happy soy boy and alternative dairy co are both pretty good (but hard to find at a reasonable price).

    • I got 16x 1L alternative dairy co soy milks for $64 from thecommongoodcoffee.com during a bonsoy drought, but I still prefer Bonsoy and will be going back after I'm done with the alternative dairy co
