Best to grab one secondhand. Got mine for $25 fb marketplace

I bought one of these recently for around $150 but compared to my JBL charge 5 ($134 from good guys commercial), they just aren’t as good…

    • +2

I moved from the Soundlink Mini v1 to the JBL charge 4 and my opinion is quite different. The Soundlink shits all over the charge and that was about 7yo before I sold it.

      • +1

Tbh that’s what I expected too..
Soundlink mini II just don’t have the bass that JBL charge 5 does.

        • +2

Oh what genre do you listen to? I feel like the JBL is muffled which gives the effect of it being more bass but goes flat when it’s too loud. the Soundlink Mini to me was clearer and had more bass. The minimum frequency to turn on is kind annoying as well because it cuts in and out when watching something at a low volume. The Charge series is great though and I’ll keep it for beach and parks. I quite like how there’s a charge port and all plugs at the back. My Soundlink came with a base so you could hide the cables but doesn’t look like it comes standard anymore.

Oh what genre do you listen to?

Did a sound test on a Skrillex track and some trance music…

            JBL is muffled

That’s the impression I have always had about JBL products too, that they are just about inferior to Bose and Sony.
But I checked out Charge 5’s review videos and they said it was different from other JBL products, it has a smooth sound output to it.
And I think that in the price region of >$200, charge 5’s are a very good option.

Having said that, I’ll give it another go with the Bose speakers, maybe see if I can configure its settings maybe…

@Gervais fanboy: Oh interesting. I might go in-store to check out the 5 specifically. Good to have a conversation with another user of both products. Thanks for your input

              • @ExtraSalt: Cheers matey 👍🏻

Thanks for not getting emotive like that other fella..

                • +1

@Gervais fanboy: Yeah, that was weird lol

                  • +1

@ExtraSalt: Wtf I expected a full on fight and a few C bombs. You blokes disappointment me. :-)

                    • @CocaKoala: haha it was wild. I went to Costco a couple days after this chat to pick up the Mini II. IT was a good purchase..disappointed it doesnt come with a dock anymore but picks up low volume where the JBL would've cut out previously.

              • @ExtraSalt: I went to the beach last weekend and compared the two…
JBL charge 5 were way clear.

I’d love for you to give them a test.

                • +1

@Gervais fanboy: Yeah no real issue with clarity when listening to it outside or in a large room, my issues mainly came when I connected it to my monitor to use as an external speaker. It wound thatch low volume so you’d constantly miss out. This Bose hasn’t skipped a beat though. As good as I remembered my V1 to be. I use the charge at work in the mornings now when there’s few people around

You are expecting too much from a compact and portable speaker imo. They have limitations.

What the JBL probably has is exaggerated Mid Bass.

          • +1

            @scuderiarmani: lol, I made a point about comparative expectations…
How imo Product A (JBL Charge 5) is better than (Bose Soundlink 2).
Aren’t they both ‘compact speakers’ though ?

What the JBL probably has is exaggerated Mid Bass.

            Okay, probably..

@Gervais fanboy: You are playing trance music, hardly a test products like Bose would use when they demo their products…. They know their limitations, that's why they play carefully selected songs.

Trance is the complete opposite of what they'd do. It's very intensive

I've heard many JBL speakers, they are clearly targeting a different audience.

Regardless, compact speakers is the complete opposite of what you want for actual real bass. Bass needs size and usually volume too.

                @scuderiarmani:

                You are playing trance music

                And ‘skrillex’
Just conveniently left that one out ?

Secondly, not all trance music is some monotone murmurs.
A lot of them have techno beats to them, some have bass drops too..

Trance is the complete opposite of what they'd do. It's very intensive

                Okay maybe,
Bottom line - I played the music I like and I liked the JBL selection better. Simple.

compact speakers is the complete opposite of what you want for actual real bass

What I ‘want’ is a 5k complete Sonos music setup.
Reality rn - I just compared two speakers and I like one better than the other.
I don’t where you taking this conversation to..

                • -2

                  @Gervais fanboy: That's great.

I don't care what music you play, but if you seriously think any of these portable style speakers are suited for such things, well, you be you.

Trance, Skrillex, I don't care. It's bass heavy and unnatural demanding sounds that budget speakers will struggle with.

Musically I'd take the Bose 1000000 times over.

                    Never said or suggested that.
Just compared two good products, liked one more than the other…

@scuderiarmani: You took a perfectly constructive conversation and spin it 180 lol.

I do agree, I enjoy the sound from a Bose a lot more. Especially the sound and construction of the Soundlink Mini’s, but chill. We are talking about 200-300 portable speakers.

    Good ole inflation

  • Had the initial model from memory. Fantastic device for what it was.

Not a huge Bose fan, but credit where it's due, they make brilliant compact speakers. Seemed far better than any trash in stores like JB, HN etc etc.

  • Why such an old model is still selling for this much?

    • Because it's probably the best speaker you can get for it's size.
