Uber Trip Refunded by Uber

So I have a bit of an issue. Around 2 weeks ago I took my first ever Uber trip.

The trip went well. Driver showed up, got to destination, no issues at all.

I gave the driver a 5 star review and gave him a small tip through the app.

Two days later I got an email from Uber saying they had adjusted the value of the trip to $0.91. Uber had given me a refund for the difference.

I immediately contacted Uber via the app, to question why a refund had been issued when I hadn't requested one. Got an auto response to say the trip had been refunded. Responded back to say I hadn't asked for refund and wanted to make sure driver got paid.

Got an email back from support asking for further details of the issues. Responded back but got auto email to say issue had been closed. Tried to call the phone number but it's only for diamond members so they hung up.

Questions:

  1. Why would they issue a refund if one hadn't requested one?
  2. How do I get the refund reversed?
  3. Will the driver get paid for the trip?
  4. Is there a way to call them if you're not a diamond member?
  5. Could this be some sort of new rider incentive that's just been poorly explained?

Could have been a new account introductory offer or some system glitch. It's not worth the hassle and headache, leave it and move on.

If its been adjusted on your end then its the same on the drivers side. Means they've been paid 0 because it looks like you've only paid Ubers booking fee.

As drivers are private contractors you are actually directly paying them, then they pay uber a commission and booking fee. But Uber obviously takes its cut before passing the funds on to the driver. Your tax invoice should show the breakdown on how the refund has been covered.

Invoice says "We adjusted the total for your recent ride - ato $0.91"

And then refund back to original credit card.

It's unfair for the driver if he didn't get paid for the trip

Hang on, so you're trying to find a way to pay Uber money? What?

Just be happy you got the discount!

Sounds more like they’re trying to make sure the driver actually got paid for their service.

      • +7

This. Driver did the work and should get paid for it

That’s why I’ll always tip in cash for good Uber drivers (pretty hard to come by these days though…)

      Cash is king. 🤴

Really unrelated question, why tip at all?

Maybe I'm overreacting but I don't want the tipping culture front the states coming to Straya. Been to the states a few times and I hate the tipping aspect, understand that its because they don't get paid a decent hourly wage but here we do.

      • Won’t tip for anything else as I agree, and I will make it a point to boycott places (especially)restaurant especially with mandatory or pushy on asking for tips for especially average service- but there is no way these drivers are being paid a fair living wage

I understand and empathize with the sentiment but that's what the companies are banking on. Pushing the responsibility of paying their workers a fair wage onto the customer, Uber being a US company exemplifies this.

          • @JoeBogan: It's like they're trying to brainwash the customer and the employee via their ads even. "Uber drivers can earn up to $34p/h…. this is based on 20 hr working week, blah blah, tipping and blah blah".

When I heard that ad I was just omg get stuffed.

        • Last trip I booked for my son when trains were down - 11km, 28min, $40.

I also don't normally tip. However I've heard stories of drivers being paid a pittance and he gave me good tips on things to see on our holiday. Thought the service deserved a tip.

  • Uber drivers are on a knife edge of being sham contractors. 8 Asian nations have agreed that it is sham contract work and therefore banned uber.
Just because Australia has a corrupt TWU this does not mean one day the full bench of the federal court sees it enforceable. How dependent AUS is on the US?
Given that they suck 27% out of Australia's personal transport market you should not feel bad if uber errs in your favour.
Uber's CEO gets a huge compensation for some structure that may never produce black figures!

what are those nations again? They've banned uber to allow local competition instead. Here they come: grab, gojek, bolt etc.

I'm in no doubt that they've been lobbied to ban Uber from either local competitors or the taxi industry, neither of which are better.

The fundamental issue is that "driving" is pretty much an unskilled job which anyone can jump in and do. It's even easier than most manual labour factory jobs where you will have to learn how to operate machinery, work in a large team, do potentially heavy lifting…etc.

It's just not a job that lends itself to high pay. Having previously driven for Uber when I was in university to make pocket change on the side, I think it's a great job. I needed to be strategic about the times I worked, needed to bring a laptop with me so I could do some school work whilst waiting…etc.

However, net-net, I still made around $20 per hour driving at strategic times. I drove around 10 - 15 hours per week during semester, and usually 30 - 40 hours per week during breaks and managed to pay for everything I needed to go through uni.

Was it a high-paying job? Obviously not, but it sure beat working as wait staff in a restaurant, working in retail or doing heavy manual labour. No having to negotiate rosters, get punished for turning down a shift, navigate workplace politics to be buddy buddy with the manager to get the good shifts. FWIW, the issue is that it's not meant to be a sustainable long-term career.

No, but they deserve to earn a minimum wage at least. Remember there is absolutely no entitlements either, as well as liability for an increasing number of costs and GST etc.

Wow you need a brain 😂😂🤡

While you had good intentions, if Uber have decided not to pay a driver, there is nothing you will be able to do to change that, even if you somehow negotiated to pay them for the trip, they would just keep the money and not pay the driver.

    • +1

Certainly seems that way. Uber help and support system is terrible. There is no way to escalate the issue

Good on the poster/passenger has the honesty and decency to care for the Uber drivers income need to be more people like them.

Gets a refund and still whinges about it 😂. Mate just be happy you even got a refund. The driver isn’t going to miss out much from $1 lol. It’s not even worth the time it took you to try and find out. Do you need a better hobby?

    • +2

No, the whole trip was refunded, bar 91 cents…
