Possibly the best Wifi 6 gaming router. Not the cheapest it has been in the past but seems like it doesn't get much black friday love so far while its sibling RT-AX86S is having some discount now in Mwave and Amazon. The price is around $469 in all other shops I found.

Remember to get ebay giftcards for 3% off from Shopback.

I have had this router for a couple of years now and it truly is fantastic.

    • how is the wifi strength? 4x 2 house, looking to upgrade, and wondering to get one of these behind the garage, to cover the whole house, or two cheaper ones e.g. 2 x AX55's which are on sale $120 each.

Or third maybe getting the RT-AX86U as a beast to AiMesh a cheap AX55 node in the back of the house for complete coverage? if the AX86U has a large signal strength footprint then one router may be enough. Double brick… WA based.

Not a good deal at all, fork out abit more for the ax6000

    • Good find.. I do have a special requirement where my router needs to fit the narrow space behind my tv though so form factor also a consideration.

    It’s the ax88u that I’d want!

    • I was originally thinking the same, but after a bit of research I actually think the 86U is the one for me.

  • Recently replaced my wireless card to a ASUS PCE-AX3000 Wireless-AX. I'm still using an old belong router (must be wireless N), and 50/20 HFC NBN.

I don't game that much but any advantage of getting a newer router? Could use a few more tax deductions this year. Does wireless AX drop less packets or slightly faster browsing? Not like I've got the fastest NBN or anything. Don't need the best so just seeing if something like these are worthwhile. Cheers

    • Imo don't think your setup will benefit from this as they are much cheaper routers which does the job for 50/20 speed. But if you're looking for a router right now for potential gigabit speed upgrade down the road then like the other comment said the ax6000 seems to be a better deal unless you have space consideration like me.

    • Wouldn't hurt, but at the same time, you probably won't experience night and day differences.

Wireless N is pretty old though.

Are you atleast getting 50 down on wifi throughout your house?

Ignore the gaming crap. Often it's not applicable for Australians anyway and more than likely it's just complete marketing BS.

      • Thanks guys, it was more for future proofing or something more up-to-date (Wireless AX, wi-fi 6). So don't need the best just something pretty decent.

Yes, getting 50-51 easily and reliable connection here. Could look at getting a speed upgrade when some decent deals come around but usually happy paying $50-60/m. Could get better if it's for work too though.

  • I have the RT-AC86U on Merlin and already impressed. This RT-AX86U would be super!

    • I have the exact same router on Merlin and in the few years I've owned it, not once had it gone wrong.

Aside from anytime I need to make a configuration change, it's literally a set & forget device.

  • I have this RT-AX86U router and I really can't complain about it. the router works great and it's solid.

However my old netgear 7000P I can go on for hours about how bad that was.

  • Is it broken?
When I visit the site it says $520.
Even if I apply the coupon, it still says $520 (save $50).
    Seems dodgy to me.

    • Worked for me just now…

Yea the price is listed as $520, need to enter one of the 20% or 22% discount codes

You should see a message on the page that says 'Take 22% off this item', like such: https://imgur.com/a/GDfwn44

      • I didn't see that, but my wife with eBay plus did, either I did something wrong or eBay just doesn't like me. Either way, seems like a good deal, thanks for sharing! I've been on the look out for this for a long time.
It's a shame we can't get the newer Pro variant anywhere though.

Have set up the AX6000, the web interface and apps are years ahead of the basic NBN provided Belong router I had, with a limitless amount of options and customisations and diagnostic tools. Obviously the range is excellent now with Full bars etc, just the form factor is pretty big and thinking the AX86U may have been better to put behind the tv or something (blocked the signal anyway so not the best). guess I just need to tidy up and get some new Cat6 cables (it notified that a couple of mine could be improved), and a small table/stand to put it on so not on the floor.

I'm just not into gaming that much anyway and the ping/speed maybe similar to what i had (the new chrome update on android feels slow anyway). Great router though and performance, was playing around with the asus instant guard (which requires a public IP, so disabled CGNAT however turned it back on (for another level of security) and easier to just use the NordVPN app when i need to. Big waste of time setting up smart plugs and devices again but handy using the 2.4GHz channel as a 'legacy' channel for B/G/N (woudlnt work with Wi-fi 6 / AX.

Hopefully can still claim on tax with 'gaming' in the name (but would anyway). Prob shouldn't have opened it.

    Cheers,
