Western Digital My Book Live 3TB NAS $229

100

Picked-up a Western Digital My Book Live 3TB NAS for $229 at JB HiFi this afternoon. I think considering the ticketed price in store was $265, the negotiated price of $229 was a good deal. Have provided the receipt via the link.

  • Nice job with the bargaining :)

Great bargain for sure! Would much prefer the HP Microserver though, I know it's not 3TB but just price wise :)

  • Nice.

  • I know I'm going to sound stupid, but, what is the difference between this NAS hard drive and say plugging a 3TB external hard drive into the USB port of my wireless router and using that to share my media, docs, etc?

Sorry of this is a super stupid question :)

Speed! Most of the time NAS transfer speed is faster as it has got a dedicated cpu to handle it. Thats the most impt thing to me as i dun want to wait forever to transfer a few Gig of data.

      • Ok cool. Thanks :)

      • Nice to know about the speed different.

since it will be on 24/7, power consumption became a topic of interest to me.
        - Wireless Router with USB port is using 20W.
        - how much power will a dedicated NAS consume?

        • well… it does more than just speed.
i use them to download torrents
          hosting website
          allocate different user, with password
          DLNA sever
          Cloud access files
          share between different OS
providing back up hdd via raid 5
Not too sure about other nas.
          my consumed 53W

    • Also, lots of wireless routers currently in use don't have a USB port that can share an external HDD over the network like that.

      • You share it from a computer

wastes power leaving computers on for that

    • I also think that not all routers permit concurrent access. Some require custom software installed on the pc to use them, and only one users can use the drive at once time. I can't remember which brand this was, though. Was it cisco?

  • will officework match this price with 5% ??

  • Thanks OP, I showed the sales guy your receipt, he had to speak to his manager, came back 30 seconds later and said no worries.
