New Spool and Line for Ozito Line Trimmer

I have a PXCLTS-0182 (2x18V ozito line trimmer). The replacement spool is https://ozito.com.au/products/pxc-2-0mm-x-8-0m-spool-line/

My question is :

  1. Has anyone tried to fit a 2.4mm line to the spool? Will it physically fit through the eyelets? Does this budget trimmer have enough grunt with a heavier line?

  2. One of the spools has its bump worn right through and needs replacement. Has anyone found anything else that fits which is harder wearing, or can these only be used with the ozito replacement spool?

Hoping to get some opinions and answers since it seems to be a popular budget option here.

Thanks

  • I recently saw the Husqvarna T35 recommend as a replacement head. It claims to fit various types so I bought it but I cannot figure out how to attach the damn thing.

So… that's either a great or terrible recommendation depending on if I figure it out haha.
Or if @AMOKS answers me in that other thread.

There's a hole on the top side of the trimmer head where it connects to the trimmer, put a screw driver in there to stop trimmer head spinning. Turn it right to twist it off. Then twist new one on (left to tighten). I replaced my 2x18v Ozito trimmer head with "MAKITA EZY-WORK 102MM NYLON HEAD M10 X 1.25LH" cost $29.95 and it's awesome, I now buy the trimmer line it comes with too, cheaper than bunnings trimmer lines and lasts forever. Hasn't jammed once and been using for 2 months, multiple times per week.

Is yours the straight shaft or bent? I fear that only works on the straight version.

      • This just false information. The 2 x 18 ozito doesn't have a threaded spindle, it has a spindle with flattened sides to lock the head anwith a allen headed bolt to hold it together. No hole to stop the head rotating to disassemble either, not that it's needed in this case.

This makes it impossible to replace the head with another unless you make an adapter or just bodge it.

Stick to the stock head and I recommend the cheap Saxon 2mm line, bumping still works and it doesn't jam up like the more expensive line that gets recommended all the time. It's too soft and works better on larger diameter spools.

        • The Saxon line is surprisingly good quality. I use the 2mm on my battery trimmer and it lasts a long time and never have issues with clogging or breaking.

    I run a 2.4mm, works fine.

Yes, no problem with it fitting. 2mm will give a cleaner finish if you are just maintaining well manicured edges, 2.4mm gives you a bit more grunt to get through thicker weeds and grass.

  • The head on PXCLTS-0182 (bent shaft) cannot be replaced with a different trimmer head. It's not the universal screw on type, but a specific ozito insert thingy. Trust me, I tried.

There is another ozito line trimmer, the one with straight shaft, not sure of the code. Those ones you can replace the head with a universal head.

    • Ah crap that must be the difference bwtwen mine and the recommendation I was following.

2.4mm is fine. There’s a review on the Bunnings website of the PXCLTS where someone describes upgrading the bump head by drilling and passing through a rounded head bolt and washer to reinforce the bump head, as well as drilling out a hole on the side so you could have it run as a double line.

I’ve done the latter, and it works really well. I’ve not bothered reinforcing the bump head as I only bump it on dirt and it hasn’t worn down much if at all. Anyway, replacement spool is only $12ish if it was super worn.

Thanks all, esp @hambeet. I'll buy another spool and try to figure out running the double line method, as well as the rounded head bolt+washer to reinforce the bump head. My bottom of the bump head just worn out so thin, it popped off and nothing's left to hold the spring in.

I've also just ordered some 2.4mm Maxpower 338808 twisted line from Amazon and will give it a go.

In case anyone reads this in future, my 2.4mm twisted line required drilling the holes that hold the line in place before you start rolling it around the spool, as well as the notches on the edge of the spool a bit wider.

I tried the dual line but in my attempt to drill the second hole open, the metal bit came off resulting in the edge of the second hole not being protected. This was impt as I found the line would heat up and melt /stick to the edge of the hole that didn't have the metal edge.

I reverted to a single line but I'm impressed with the durability of the 2.4mm line. It's a bit harder for the cutting edge to cut, which results in a bit more vibration.

Overall, I think the ozito is made to handle a 2mm line more comfortably, but only time will tell if pushing it to take a 2.4mm line will result in extra fatigue on the machine.
