Laptop Buying Advice for Basic Use Budget $500- $600

Evening OzB service desk.

After some advice on buying a laptop for family member. Basic use mainly Office suite, general browsing and some Netflix.

Budget around $500-600 but is flexible. After value for money and reliability without paying for extra specs that aren't needed.

Was keen on the Acer deal but missed out on stock

Any suggested alternatives?

  • Im getting confused at i3/5 vs AMD vs others so not really sure how to compare properly

$600 at JB but $100 more doubles SSD and gets AMD 5

    Also https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-vivobook-15-x515-15-…
    $550

    • For the intended purpose, and If it's between these 2, go the Asus:

      • Cheaper
      • Higher resolution screen will be a better viewing experience - 1920x1080 is basically the minimum standard now
      • Double the amount of storage - more space to store files
      • Extra USB Type-A port - can plug more stuff in

The Lenovo might handle some [very] light gaming slightly better, and claims a higher battery life if the user intends to use it unplugged but honestly I don't think the trade off of a much worse screen and half the storage is worth it. It also has a built in card reader, but if you really need that capability you can use the money you saved buying the Asus plus the extra USB port to plug in a USB card reader like this one to get EVEN. MORE. CONNECTIVITY.

      • Awesome thanks very much

    • The Vivobook in your link has decreased in price, from $550 to $499.

  • No real point agonising over specs at that price …

  • Meaning all are much the same and will do the job or shit across the board?

  • +1

    5 dollars to 600 dollars?

    • Op doesn't mind toys as long as can do the work :)

      Maybe he meant $500-$600

  • at that price, youd be better off with a chromebook
